James Kalm adores Stuart Davis! This historic exhibition is the first major retrospective for this painter’s work in New York since the Metropolitan Museum’s 1991 survey. Focusing in on Davis’s proto-cubist works, viewers will witness the artistic arc of development from the tobacco paintings, through French Cubism to a radical, jazzy version of what the artist theoretically called “color space” design. Davis not only introduced Americans to cubism, but was also a harbinger of Pop Art, Hard Edge Abstraction as well as textual painting. We’ll get glances of iconic works like “Swing Landscape” “Mellow Pad” and “Little Giant Still Life”. This program was recorded June 8th 2016 at the New Whitney Museum.

You really did him justice. Love the way you zoom in close up, the way I do when at a museum. Thanks, Mr. Kalm, thoroughly enjoyed the talk and the show. Tremendous!

Thank you for capturing this show. Stuart is one of my favorite artists. In my opinion, his work was also influenced from Matisse's Jazz text.

I’ve watched this for the second time, it just gets better - What puzzles me is Stuart Davis is such ahead of his time Artist and just as good as it gets, so far and why has he not gotten the recognition he should be getting, If that makes any sense

Among the people who know painting, he is recognized as a master. But nowadays, he's pushed out of the spotlight by artists and institutions who have instrumentalized agendas regarding the market, and political directions that aren't sympathetic to Davis's project.

Wow! Your hosting was really insightful. You highlighted the very things I would’ve hit upon myself. The thing about Davis is that his work is like a language that I might not speak but have no trouble reading.

You're welcome. As a painter, I'm paranoid that the "powers that be" would just as soon see painting forgotten. I feel blessed to be here in New York where there's still a vibrant painting community, and I hope by posting these vids to inspire other members of the tribe to keep painting...

DUDE! Yeah, I love the work of Stuart Davis too... in fact I made a trip from London to NYC especially to catch this show at the Whitney... I got there for the last two days. One of the unsung heroes of 20th century art... along with his contemporary in the UK, David Bomberg. They both perch on my shoulders when I'm painting... metaphorically speaking!

Thank you Kate and thank you James for a video of a wonderful painter, a giant of 20th century American art. I've always loved his work but for some reason he seems to just fall off my radar when he should be front and center. As a sculptor I find tons of sculptural elements, shapes and forms that inspire me. Not that I'd copy them but there are certain juxtapositions of shapes in these paintings that just blow me away in their 3 dimensional possibilities.

Best one yet I've seen. I learned to pause each picture when in full frame. Minus your commentary unfortunately b/c of sweeping. But Stuart Davis is awesome. It is so easy to see so many artists informed by his work. Basquiat I'm betting strongly influenced by Davis, color, big singular shapes, use of semiotics, composition. Albeit, Davis is so much more formal and joyful than JMB...but the city like in JMB's work is front and center. Better job on camera. Do more good artists. Full frame pause so I can pause to look at full cut of painting please. Sweeping does me little good. Thanks. Awesome show. Love Love Love Stuart Davis.

I like the paintings, but I can't believe in his cityscapes of Paris that he didn't make use of those incredible chimney pots that are on top of every roof in Paris. Or that he didn't include the chestnut trees throughout the year- they're so outstanding in Paris.

+jk/lm -- is it a coincidence that James Kalm precedes Loren Munk in the alphabet? It would have to be the case that you are yourself an artist -- your incisive examination of Davis' work could not be that of a casual cultural tourist. I've been looking at some of your paintings. I really enjoy your “Aesthetic Discomfort Chart.” I know your pain, really I do. The diagrams and maps deserve more of my attention.

Casein is an aqueous painting medium, which is made from milk. Its seemingly odd derivation notwithstanding, casein is fast-drying, durable and permanent. The use of casein dates all the way back to pre-historic times, in which artists used milk (possibly human milk) in their cave-painting mediums.

PLEASE museums! Get rid of these horrible frames that do nothing except make great paintings look like something that should be hanging in some old lady's Ohio living room. I mean, take the friggin' frames off and show them like paintings are shown now and how they were seen when they were painted.
