How fantastic. Two of the greatest songwriters of the past century

He was huge in the middle 70's - and one of the best singer/songwriters. He's been forgotten, only because so much time has passed. He's not doing much lately. But think of his body of work - Running On Empty, The Pretender, Here Comes Those Tears Again,That Girl Could Sing, Take It Easy (The Eagles), Somebody's Baby and of course, The Load Out Song and Stay.

The organ solo at the end of this song has to be one of the best keyboard solos in rock 'n roll history. Very moving and very powerful.

Just an anecdote to share. Years ago, I interviewed for a technical writing job with a software company in Oregon. First question out of the senior guy's mouth was "Who is your favorite musician?" I thought it an off-the-wall question, but I answered immediately, "Bruce Springsteen." The guy looked at the other interviewers (all die-hard Springsteen fans as it turns out); then smiled and said, "Right answer..you're hired!" Easiest job interview I ever had! (Probably had it in the bag anyway).

2004... amazing. The last time I saw Springsteen was in the late '80s. And it was incredible (do I really need to say that?) Just the best show(s) I'd ever seen. We went back three nights in a row. And I've seen a lot of bands. What amazes me is that this show looks like it might have been just as good.

there are many vids of bruce and jackson performing together. this is by far the best. a perfect song for the two of them. when they started performing together, it was funny to see the influence each had on the other. some of the songs on "the river" show a definite browne influence. and browne's music got a little tougher and he became a much more expressive live performer. two of the very greats.

+1tishhead. I agree . This is probably their greatest collaboration between the two of them that has been seen or so it seems to me. I think it is because of Jackson’s willingness to accommodate his co- singer with whatever it takes. I don’t see this in Bruce Springsteen being accommodating even within his own band.

Wow, I agree with you guys -- two of (perhaps) the greatest musical icons of our time (IMHO), together on stage, playing one of Bruce's most soulful, mournful, and emotionally evocative tunes. Of course Danny Federici is the heart of this recording. The sound he created with his piano has evaporated with his passing. His unique contribution stands out by setting the feeling and pace of this anthem. Part 1 of 3

The Boss and the Pretender- both are awesome musicians in their own right-and the backing musicians here are also quite talented. Browne and Springsteen have had a long and happy friendship and musical history together- and hopefully will continue to do so for many many more years.

Oops. The song is, of course, Racing in the Street. Darkness is the album. Then there are the songs he's written and never released, but have been covered by other people. "Because the Night" was written for this album, but it didn't make the cut. He gave it to Patti Smith, whom Bruce admires enormously, and allowed her to change the lyrics in one verse and take co-authorship credit. Check him playing Because, live in 1978; the version that's about 7:40. He's a legend for good reason.

+ bruchee. I have come back to this song so many times. You see the comradery between the two. Jackson always does his best to accommodate the singer he’s backing up , although this appears to be equal time between the two of them, which is nice. Look to 3:06 to 3:08 to see Jackson give a nod and a smile to the lyrics about the dude in LA. The two of them have performed together for many years, but this may be the best.

+ bruchee. Jackson doing his best to accommodate another singer as he always does. When he is asked to perform with another artist, it is never about him. I wish I could say the same about Bruce. I’ve seen Bruce mess up Jackson’s songs two or three times leaving Jackson to pull it all together in the end. Jackson and Bruce on this Bruce Springsteen song is really nice , maybe a masterpiece.

For me -- and I mean this emphatically -- Jackson Browne and Bruce Springsteen, more than any of their contemporaries have the ability to draw out feelings that are impossible to articulate, and may be exclusively in a man's domain. Somehow women, like my wife, can't really grasp why these songs have such power. (BTW she loves me anyway). They think this song is about racing in the streets; it's not. Part 2 of 3

How many great songs has Bruce written? Maybe 200, but he's been at a while. 40 years. Heck, that's only 5 a year. This one, "Darkness on the Edge of Town" (1978) came out when he was 28. Every song is brilliant. The albums that preceded it, "Born to Run" (1975), and followed it, "The River" (1980), "Nebraska" (1982) "Born in the USA" (1984), heck, right until "Magic" (2007), have few mediocre songs. Oh, then there's "Tracks" (1998), 66 songs not deemed good enough for a "regular" album.

I love this for the usual Roy Bittan masterpiece that is this song- but I found myself a little shocked that Jackson didn't have the cadence of the words down- had he really listened? I am a fan, don't get me wrong, but he didn't do this song well here. IMO..
@stargazer6753
@stargazer6753 5 жыл бұрын
+Meggie Price. Not so bad. Have you ever seen Bruce when he is performing with Jackson on a Jackson Browne song? He is not with him and is all over the place leaving Jackson as a performer to pick up the pieces before the song ends. They must have an unspoken agreement considering that what will happen will happen at least on the part of Bruce, and Jackson accepts it for what it is. Nothing against Bruce. I have read that he treated his band in the past the same way.

+ bruchee. As much as I appreciate Springsteen’s talent , I can’t understand why he want’s to sound like a country bumpkin. I’m from Kentucky and nobody I know sounds like that . Is this a Bob Dylan wanna be thing. To this day Bob does it, except for the “Shadows in the Night” album and his appearance on The Johnny Cash Show, years ago, where he suddenly remembered that with Johnny Cash he didn’t need to be contrived or unnatural. Bruce is fine. I just don’t get the voice thing.

@@puckpaul11 Agreement, yes. “Drawl” is a complement. I like this song but at times I burst out laughing at Bruces’ accent and Jackson is just going along for the ride with his friend. As a matter of fact whenJackson sings “country western style” , he sounds authentic. There are numerous examples that are not laughable.

+Eric t . Wouldn’t that have been extraordinary and wonderful. Doesn’t Bruce have a fake country accent when he is from NJ? I’m from Kentucky and no one talks or sounds like that.What is it with this fake accent ? The same goes for Bob Dylan. There are several examples , some recently (Shadows in the Night), where he shows his pure unadulterated voice.
