That's my stepdad Sam Hood giving the intro - he also managed The Gaslight Cafe (owned by his father Clarence Hood), and he later worked for Columbia Records. I have a couple of Sam's Bruce bootleg cassettes from these years - incredible stuff. Tears come to my eyes watching this.

I was at the Two Jews Blues concert in Boston in the early 70's. The unknown opening act was much better. Really rocked. Bruce Springsteen. Never forgot it.
@kindnessfirst96704 жыл бұрын
Part of his record company audition. He was 22. I have read that there were 12 people in the audience for this- it was an "open mic" night and Columbia Records needed to see if he was any good in front of a live audience so they called around to find an open stage that night. He is playing a cracked guitar burrowed from a friend back in NJ. There was no case so he had to carry it over his shoulder through the streets of NYC.

More than you'd think - This is the first time I've heard this song - and I can hear the melodies of TWO future Springsteen HITS; "Rosalita", in the beginning, and then "Blinded by the Light"! No wonder this song kinda got swept under the rug - BRUCE took the melodies he wasfiddling with, and split them into TWO ALL-TIME CLASSIC SONGS! Amazing.

i was at this show and met bruce right after he walked offstage. i was having a smoke, telling bruce i had to quit. when he asked me why i replied because it was bad for my lungs, that i was born to run. when i said that he got quiet and then said, "born to run?" i said "yeah, why?" he said "oh, nothin'..." he asked me if i had a pen. i gave him my bic red fine-point and he said goodbye. sometimes, late at night, i wonder, "gee..."

When Bruce walked off stage i immediately turned off all the lights & accidentally shortwired a cable which shocked my hand & caused my body to spasm badly.... i was embarrassed as hell but Bruce seemed very concerned & asked "what's up man, u ok??". To hide my embarrassment i replied: "Yeah, i just like dancing in the dark".

Yes. His parents had moved to California by this time. So there was no going home. But he had local success with Child, Steel Mill and The Bruce Springsteen Band. He probably had a few bucks to get by. But he didn't want to just get by. That's what made him the man he became.

You can hear potential here, but, sadly, like a million other young guys (and gals) who want to be muscians, they eventually need to get a real job, lose their focus, and eventually give up dreams of fame, fortune, (and girls). Only one in a million makes it to a modest level. And only one in a billion not only makes it, but writes the best songs, puts out the best albums, and puts on the best concerts - for over 40 years. How come this guy is that one-in-a-billion?

Did he get a record deal on his own meaning like Dylan, with no band, just him as a solo artist? If so I can understand how he later on got the E Street band together as he would have had a lot of cred as a signed artist. I never understood that before, because he had no money back then how he got a band that good

His Wiki page says that he auditioned solo to get the record deal, then showed up at the recording session with a handful of musicians, some of whom would soon go on to become ESB.
