love affair with this man's music started in 1974 at a concert with a friend --- didn't know who he was --- and I have been completely on board every inch of the way since that. The joy never ends!!

This song has just about everything you could want from a mid-to-late '70s Bruce song: girls, souped-up cars, bad boys, disapproving fathers, Catholicism, lust, drag races, and a Bo Diddley beat.

Kind of eye opening when an unreleased song by Springsteen is better than most released songs today. To be fair, this song is incredible. It seems to combine a lot of the elements from not only the Darkness album, but Born to Run and Nebraska as well. I'll be listening to this nonstop for at least a week.

Wow, so haunting. Sounds like it was song in a church. Unbelievable atmostphere in this song, depth of feeling and raw talent.

It STILL confounds me as to why this song was not included on "The Promise" compilation of outtakes - especially considering that "Preacher's Daughter" is well liked, and even more importantly, this is a complete take with vintage lead vocals. There was plenty of room for it to be included on "The Promise."

I told my son after the Promise was released that there's still more out there from the Boss. Maybe we have to start a "turn 'em loose, Bruce" campaign.

Part 2 . But YES, I totally agree - ANYTHING "New" to most of his fans, ESPECIALLY OLD GOLD like this, would be quite a treat for our ears. START THE GRASS ROOTS CAMPAIGN!

In response to a lot of comments about who wrote the song, etc.: This is clearly "Mona" with different lyrics. "Mona (I Need You Baby)" was a Bo Diddley song from 1957. As noted by "ftblrg" Springsteen has used it in concert as an intro to "She's The One" because they both have the "Bo Diddley beat." Springsteen's live versions, as well as the music here, are closer to the Rolling Stones' cover of "Mona," with the pulsing reverb guitar effect.

Darlene Durrwachter Rushing this is like a prequel to "She's the one". Bruce wrote "Preachers Daughter" during the darkness recordings. This was also recorded for Darkens.

I assume you remember who "Turn 'em Loose Bruce" was? New York State Supreme Court. Judge Bruce McMarion Wright. He earned the nickname "Turn 'em loose Bruce" because of his low bail practices, especially to minority defendants. I actually saw him and heard him speak "Back in the day" at a "Men's Club Breakfast" (with my Dad) at the now (sadly) defunct Monsey Jewish Center (NY). He was considered quite radical and DID seem to be quite a character. As an adult I could relate better to his side.

springsteen should have sued back when (On the darkside) came out in the 80s. same song
@tastemaker_8711 жыл бұрын
Passionate as always but you can imagine why it was left off the album. "Darkness" wasn't exactly infused with gospel. Bruce's vocal style on this track is also different (assuming it's correct that this was a Darkness outtake) In the "tracks" collection, Bruce explains why some good things had to be left out.
@Hargiwald12 жыл бұрын
@rufaless Well, it's not exactly the same song. If anything, On the Darkside sounds like a mix between She's the One and I'm a Rocker. I definitely think "Eddie" was a Springsteen fan.
