I was actually hoping for more of a discussion about what the song is about. This song is a meditation on those that lost their lives on 9/11. Especially the firemen going up the stairs, while others were trying to escape. It's also a celebration of all the lives rising up to heaven together in that smoky sky. Come on up!

The “dream of life” line is him doing his own background vocals… hence, why he ducks a bit away from the mic… I might prefer the song without that line… but thats just a thought

Thanks, David - loving these Springsteen reviews & appreciate your insights, from my experience a lot of people became hardcore Springsteen fans after a defining moment of one particular song that speaks to them directly - keep listening to Bruce & you might be next 🙂

One of Bruce's strengths is taking a composition and reworking it to fit the moment. For example, his Seeger Sessions Band where he transposed his "rock" tunes into a more jazz/folk element. When I hear him doing an acoustic set, I feel I'm listening to the original demo, then later the E Street Band gets their hands on it and the magic ensues!! My observation is a performer who lives for the moment. I have the impression he may rehearse the music one way in the afternoon, but, during performance if the "moment" doesn't feel right, he'll call an audible and take the song in a different direction.

For Bruce, you have to do Rosalita Come Out Tonight (from really any concert), Ramrod (from Barcelona 2002), Mary’s Place (from Barcelona 2002), Waiting On a Sunny Day (from really any concert), Sherry Darling (from the No Nukes Concert), New York City Serenade (from Rome), Born in the U.S.A. (From Madison Square Garden 2000), (Your Love Keeps Lifting Me) Higher and Higher (From the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame 25th anniversary) Kitty's Back (From Perth 2014), and Spirit In the Night (from Rio Lisboa 2016). All amazing!

Sorry David but I'm sure he's using his mic awareness, just because it's mainly for the ("dream of life") repeated echoed phrase of the rock version that he's holding back. Sky of blackness and sorrow (a dream of life) Sky of love, sky of tears (a dream of life) Sky of glory and sadness (a dream of life) Sky of mercy, sky of fear (a dream of life) Sky of memory and shadow (a dream of life) Your burning wind fills my arms tonight Sky of longing and emptiness (a dream of life) Sky of fullness, sky of blessed life (a dream of life)

Agree. When they do it live, Nils sings that line in the background and it's done in the background by him in the recorded version. So I think it's deliberate too.

@@cfraase Absolutely, and between Bruce's tone and Nils' one, there's some gap...

Well explained - maybe not your fave thing to do, but from this side of the screen - this was fun to watch If all songs get a 9- does that mean the score actually loses all meaning? I was predicting a low 7s for this one My preference for a comparison might have been the 1975 Jungleland you've done, the '99 reunion tour Jungleland ( would love to see you do that one with Mrs Heretic) and the 2012 Sweden version- first time nephew Jake had to channel the beloved Big Man after his passing. ( or if my Jedi mind trick works on JFK - I hung my head- 3 versions by Sting, the Boss and the man in black)

Oops - and I vote for intentional mike awareness- in the rock version the "dream of life" was the echo provided by backup singers

It's a good idea to do different versions of the same song. I suggest you "Atlantic City". You can compare the original acoustic version from "Nebraska" with a rock performance with the E Street Band and a nice folk version he did with the Seeger Sessions Band.

Nothing wrong with comparison videos, but the catalog is just too deep to not explore unknown gems first 💕
