What most people don't realize is for these situations-comedian (sut-com for short) , and Late host , these writers look normal, yet are really mentally ill,(you thought I was going to say "mentally illegal "roll on the floor 😳..but that is correct..your Hollywood entertainment industry scripting writering, and actors are allowing nothing to be hinded..this comes from the heart ❤...thank you verry much..

Wish he had went on to do at least 35 years and say goodnight one last time in 1997, a way to bid farewell to the last of the greats of the 20th century and the golden years of late night television, my news source came from Johnny, Ed & Doc. As Bob Hope eloquently sang "Thanks for the Memories" I'll just keep watching here on KZbin when I need to go back in time and try to relive how great we really do have it here in America despite today's troubles and an ungrateful nation that we have become.

"If you stick around, we'll stick around for a while and do the show for you." And he did so for another 5 years.Those days as a kid were really special. Staying up with my folks every Friday night to see Johnny and all the boys, the smoking and drinking, the comforting sound of my parents laughing. You can't match that kind of talent today. There was a real sense of freedom back then that Genx and the Millenials will never be able to experience because of the enslaving, stifling PC we have created for ourselves in this brave new world. I'm so very blessed to have seen this for myself and enjoyed those moments I now cherish.

I got to see Doc in a tux. Amazing. When you see him sing with Bob Hope and Pearl Bailey, you can get glimpses of his talent as a singer. He choose to hide it most of his performing career. It was our loss.

Although I was fairly young when Johnny was in his prime...MY “barometer” on his greatness, echos many of the same sentiments all of you have shared, & that is....NO ONE has ever been able to measure up to him, & the bar he set with his nonpareil talent. If you all recall, the only one to ever come reasonably close to him was Arsenio Hall. BUT, this occurred when Johnny’s retirement was imminent. Probably one of the most complex (& complicated) superstar entertainers to ever exist. But no one can ever question his genius. We will ALL pass away before there is even the slightest chance of anyone being able to replicate Johnny and the master that he was at his craft!

Man, do I ever miss Johnny Carson - he was simply the best of the best! Everything he did was a class act. And his Ronald Reagan skit, I think, probably does actually top the original "who's on first" of Abbott and Castello - assuming that's even possible. Others need to study him, and take their queue from him, that's for sure!

I use to live very close to NBC. My friends and I went to the tapings often. They're some of my best memories. The shows were always fun even during commercials. In contrast I always fell asleep in the audience during SNL in NY. Johnny brought class to everything he did. Something sadly missing today.

There's something to like about all the new, or newer "Late Night" talent, but they're not Carson. And the saddest thing is that my kids (all in college now) will never get it, or even understand why Carson defined the job. Great upload.

I spent time in the states in the late 80's and heard people mention Carson but I never watched the show. Through the magic that is the internet I find he really was a great host, could relate to almost anyone and let them be themselves. Its clear he really enjoyed meeting people and was curious about their lives, feats and defeats.

Actually, off stage he was quite reserved and had very few friends. On stage he's still one of the best. I couldn't start watching him till mid seventies when I was old enough to stay up late without my parents.

Carson's mic was still hot when Gary was doing his routine. You can hear Johnny in the background laughing at the jokes, and at times repeating the last couple of words of the punchlines. For a stand-up comic who performs on Johnny's show, the fact that they could later view the tape and hear Carson's subtle reactions to their jokes is a huge insight into the process of returning for another appearance. If Johnny liked you, you would become a star.

@@stevekay1925 After reviewing this video several times, the audio quality of Carson's voice sounds about the same from the original clips as it does on the anniversary clip, however regardless, I remember from past viewings that Carson's mic was usually hot when a comedian was working, since Carson's intent was to make every comedian do well on the show. If a comic's routine was funny enough, he/she became lucky enough to be asked to walk over and sit with Carson after his/her act, and it was a great honor. This gesture gave Johnny a chance to showcase the comic even more, and even engage with some joke-telling together. Some jealous comics who never made it to the Tonight Show, later criticized Carson for competing with comedians on the show when they walked over after their act and sat on the panel with Johnny. Comics would their stories and jokes to Johnny, and the criticism was that Johnny would often try to "top" the punchlines of the comics, but in fact, Johnny was only adding his own anecdotes or punchlines to the comic's stories. Johnny loved engaging with comics in telling funny stories and making fun of any subject together. When Robin Williams came on Johnny's show, you could see Carson's facial expressions and his body movements actually light up and react to Robin's every word, even imitating Robin's animations. Carson was always a great listener and audience member for any comic, and he loved playing with them and becoming a partner in making people laugh. He never stole punchlines or tried to outdo a comic, but rather would join in with his own contributions of impromptu humor. Johnny mentored and often coached many of the comics who appeared on his show. Johnny Carson was singularly the most influential comedian who made more stars out of more comedians than any other person in show business history. Johnny, and the Tonight show were always considered to be "THEE" big break opportunity for every aspiring comedian, many of whom went on to be successful star actors. In the 1960's through the 1990's if you finally got a shot to be on the Tonight show, you knew that you were going to make it in show business.

In regard to the Ed Ames tomahawk throwing segment: When Johnny says, "I didn't even know you were Jewish..."; I wonder if he knew that Ed actually IS Jewish. As of today (April, 2018), at 90, Ed is the last of the Ames Brothers, a former singing act, that is still alive. The brothers', born in MA, last name was actually Urick.
