Lyrics:
The screen door slams, Mary's dress waves
Like a vision she dances across the porch as the radio plays
Roy Orbison singing for the lonely
Hey, that's me and I want you only
Don't turn me home again, I just can't face myself alone again
Don't run back inside, darling, you know just what I'm here for
So you're scared and you're thinking that maybe we ain't that young anymore
Show a little faith, there's magic in the night
You ain't a beauty but, hey, you're alright
Oh, and that's alright with me
You can hide 'neath your covers and study your pain
Make crosses from your lovers, throw roses in the rain
Waste your summer praying in vain
For a savior to rise from these streets
Well now, I ain't no hero, that's understood
All the redemption I can offer, girl, is beneath this dirty hood
With a chance to make it good somehow
Hey, what else can we do now?
Except roll down the window and let the wind blow back your hair
Well, the night's busting open, these two lanes will take us anywhere
We got one last chance to make it real
To trade in these wings on some wheels
Climb in back, heaven's waiting on down the tracks
Oh oh, come take my hand
We're riding out tonight to case the promised land
Oh oh oh oh, Thunder Road
Oh, Thunder Road, oh, Thunder Road
Lying out there like a killer in the sun
Hey, I know it's late, we can make it if we run
Oh oh oh oh, Thunder Road
Sit tight, take hold, Thunder Road
Well, I got this guitar and I learned how to make it talk
And my car's out back if you're ready to take that long walk
From your front porch to my front seat
The door's open but the ride ain't free
And I know you're lonely for words that I ain't spoken
But tonight we'll be free, all the promises'll be broken
There were ghosts in the eyes of all the boys you sent away
They haunt this dusty beach road in the skeleton frames of burned-out Chevrolets
They scream your name at night in the street
Your graduation gown lies in rags at their feet
And in the lonely cool before dawn
You hear their engines rolling on
But when you get to the porch, they're gone on the wind
So Mary, climb in
It's a town full of losers, I'm pulling out of here to win

I like about 2 or 3 songs on his albums through 1990. This song is somewhat pretentious, bombastic, and Bruce's voice takes me out of it. I sort of hate it. Tend to prefer his non-anthems.

The Born to Run album is a masterpiece. He certainly had his moments in Darkness on the Edge of town and notably Nebraska, but I checked out with alot of the other stuff. Just one man's opinion. Your mileage may differ.

I was a kid in rural eastern KY, ca. 1997. I wore this CD out. I had no Discman, just an RCA boombox with a CD player I got for Christmas, so I couldn't take it with me. I remember endless summer days, wandering the backroads, fields, woods, and hollers, singing this version of this song over and over to myself. I was a latchkey kid, bored out of my mind, restless and unfulfilled, never been much of anywhere. Now I've traveled the world, found love and fulfillment, and live on the opposite side of the globe. I wouldn't trade the life I have now for anything, but sometimes I wish I could return to that July haze for just a day, in my youth and strength, wandering those open fields, nothing ahead of me but endless, anticipatory potential. Bruce got me through a lot. Thanks for this time capsule.

@@euanisles9122 used to like him. But he has always faked this “working class hero “ act. Members of the E street band even said so. He is a phoney. You know, “save the planet, don’t drive ICE”, all that stuff. In the meantime he has spent years flying his daughters back and forth to France for horse back riding sessions, and he jets all over the world. So, Thunder Road was once my favourite album, still great to listen to. He was a good song writer/story teller. But not exactly authentic.

@@chr970 well on the music side of things, I don’t agree. He has always said in interviews that the songs he writes are mostly stories from his fathers life. Ive never once seen him claim them as his own. But yeah all this save the environment stuff is just done to get a good rep. It’s very common for the rich and powerful to promote these messages and think it doesn’t apply to themselves. But still it should get in the way of your music listening experience and whoever I’m listening to i try to think of the stories told by the song rather than the guy behind the mic.

Really? You should check out 1975 in London or some of the 77/78 tours. 90s Springsteen is by far my least favourite. Thunder Road Bruce Springsteen, E Street Band The screen door slams, Mary's dress waves Like a vision she dances across the porch as the radio plays Roy Orbison singing for the lonely Hey, that's me and I want you only Don't turn me home again, I just can't face myself alone again Don't run back inside, darling, you know just what I'm here for So you're scared and you're thinking that maybe we ain't that young anymore Show a little faith, there's magic in the night You ain't a beauty but, hey, you're alright Oh, and that's alright with me You can hide 'neath your covers and study your pain Make crosses from your lovers, throw roses in the rain Waste your summer praying in vain For a savior to rise from these streets Well now, I ain't no hero, that's understood All the redemption I can offer, girl, is beneath this dirty hood With a chance to make it good somehow Hey, what else can we do now? Except roll down the window and let the wind blow back your hair Well, the night's busting open, these two lanes will take us anywhere We got one last chance to make it real To trade in these wings on some wheels Climb in back, heaven's waiting on down the tracks Oh oh, come take my hand We're riding out tonight to case the promised land Oh oh oh oh, Thunder Road Oh, Thunder Road, oh, Thunder Road Lying out there like a killer in the sun Hey, I know it's late, we can make it if we run Oh oh oh oh, Thunder Road Sit tight, take hold, Thunder Road Well, I got this guitar and I learned how to make it talk And my car's out back if you're ready to take that long walk From your front porch to my front seat The door's open but the ride ain't free And I know you're lonely for words that I ain't spoken But tonight we'll be free, all the promises'll be broken There were ghosts in the eyes of all the boys you sent away They haunt this dusty beach road in the skeleton frames of burned-out Chevrolets They scream your name at night in the street Your graduation gown lies in rags at their feet And in the lonely cool before dawn You hear their engines rolling on But when you get to the porch, they're gone on the wind So Mary, climb in It's a town full of losers, I'm pulling out of here to win
