Bruce, I've been trucking for 17 years all over this beautiful country and I've had times of messing up like that and I had one of those times being two years ago. It doesn't matter how long you've been trucking your gonna have times where you fuck up. Just own it, learn from it, and try to not do it again. Just think back in the day we didn't have Google to guide us down the wrong road we or I used a good old Ran McNally trucker map. I drove (legally) from 1992 until 2017 25 years and I couldn't tell you the number of mistakes or life lessons I learned from making a wrong turn. The main thing is no one got hurt and amazingly very little damage. Enjoy your videos as well as Mr Gentry's. Sold my truck in 2017 and had to come off the road due to medical reasons 2000 W900 KW Pearl white with purple,red,blue,and pink metal flake with the super extended sleeper had a 550 cat 355 drives and 18 speed bought new in Nov 1999. Enjoy the content and really glad to see that they are still good old fashioned drivers out there. Well Bruce, you did mess up but I'm not here to give you a hard time. You ate a piece of humble pie and you still put it on KZbin (hats off to you for that). I'm glad you're ok and I look forward to the next video. BTW I've seen worse. Right in front of my house. A semi tried to make a tight turn and the trailer rolled into a ditch. The trailer was completely on its side and still hooked to the truck. It took 2 wreckers to get it righted and once it was righted the truck drove off as if nothing happened.

I've been a truck driver in Germany for over ten years now. We've all been there in one way or another within our first years of driving, it's a constant learning process. I messed up big time backing up a turntable style trailer around a very tight 90 degree bend on a dead end road. Should've walked the road first to recognize the dead end. I got the trailer kinda around the bend but got the truck stuck in soft grass in the process. Poop hit the fan as I went ahead and separated truck and trailer to try get the truck unstuck, which only got me like 1 meter. So the recovery team hat to get my trailer out backwards first to get to the truck. About 6 grand of recovery cost..... It was my 3rd week of driving. In this business you learn quick and hard.

I all ways slide my rear axle forward unless it a heavy enough load to require the spread. This not only makes it easy to maneuver but also saves tire wear on your front axle.

# 1 You and your dad are both all ok! The truck, trailer and load are ALL replaceable! Yes, it would have been a Very hard time for you and the company, but you walked away with your lives! The fact that you caught what was going on before making it worse was some great heads up driving by you! It could have been very easy to tip your load and lose everything on it. I'm sure it was very hard to post this video, but this is a teachable moment for both you and other drivers....always zoom out a little bit to check the route you are taking. :) I'm glad everything turned out ok and your truck and trailer rolled away with minimal damage. As far as the rigging goes, I think I would have done it a little different. I'm not sure if that was a rotator on the back of the tow rig, but backing up to the back of your trailer and picking it up to swing it over to the road would have been the better way to go. The driver would have had to reposition two more times, after the first set, but there wouldn't have been any scraping on the box at all. Maybe it wasn't a rotator, but all in all, Glad to see you back on the road!

That's a reitnouer bigger bubba drop deck it'll be fine. That trailer is rated to gross 110 or 120k lbs. I have 2 reitnouer big bubba 48x102 flatbed trailers and they're rated for 100k lbs. Reitnouer makes a hell of a good trailer, that wasn't bad enough to hurt it.

Over the last 22 years I have made some huge mistakes most were in my first few years but the big difference was there was no social media or cell phone cameras and when people stopped it was to help not film. This was a major driver issue not a GPS issue. The gps gives you a suggested route it’s up to you to look and see if you go that route. No excuse with google earth that shows you satellite views. Come on now driver we all make mistakes yes.

Ehhhh kind of sloppy recovery. Got two winches, might as well use them. Extend boom over trailer. Lift it by the end. Run snatch block from the rear spade to the wheel of the trailer. Lift and pull instead of dragging the bottom of the trailer back and possibly causing harm.

I've been a trucker since 1976, 47 years, lesson learned, good. I went up and down a few of those roads, never knowing what was on the other side and I got lucky, very lucky at times.. I had cancer in 2015 and have been out of the States since then. I work for a mining group hauling a dump out of a pit and love it. Home every night and paid well. Back in April just 10 days before my 65th, I had a brain bleed, which took me off the road for about a month, I just got back into it again and had a second bleed, worse than the 1st. Right now I have been off work for about 2 months and learning to walk again. You never know what life will throw at you, I go in September to Toronto Ontario Canada, for an MRI to make sure everything is working okay upstairs. Hopefully, by then I will have gotten enough movement out of my legs to begin my last round of driving. Be careful where you go, don't put a whole lot of trust in the GPS (although they are getting better) Make use of that God-given gift between your ears. Great video and thanks for showing everyone, that you are human, and you can make booboos every now and again.

I agree. A rotator would have never needed to unhook to get into a different position. It would have lifted the whole trailer and the ramps probably would have never dragged the ground. Either that tow truck did a good job

There’s a guy local to me, 72 years old, and he’s never had a rotator. His current heavy wrecker is a 96’ model but looks like a new one. I’ve never seen him not be able to recover something a rotator could have gotten and many times he’ll go where the bigger companies won’t even consider sending their brand new rotators. He’s been operating wreckers for 50 years and we call him for every winch out and tow job we have, and with dump trucks we get in some REALLY bad spots. The man running the winches and boom is really the one who makes the difference, and a novice operator on a fully equipped modern rotator can cause a lot of trouble pretty quick.

@@J.R.in_WV yeah he can get it out just like these guys did but likely wouldn't have had to drag the trailer back across the pavement again after he high centered the trailer and probably wouldn't have bent up the tool box with a rotator. Sure a regular boom truck can get it out, but a rotator likely would have saved some damage. I've watch Ron Pratt with his 20 years of experience and his rotator get things out with far less damage than others. He has 3 regular heavy wrecker boom trucks as well in his fleet but uses the rotator when needs to.

We have a similar truck like that tow truck. Ours is a M916A3 Military Freaghtliner 6x6. Has a Detroit 60 series and a seven speed Allison. We took the fifth wheel off and mounted a 3750 gal tank, PTO driven pump with 6 duck bill head spray bars. One set in the front and a set in the rear. One one each side for spraying far and trees. It also has a 10” dump valve on the back for a drop tank used in engine support during structural fires. I off-road that beast a lot during wildland fires. Lights and a 200 watt siren onboard. Saved a lot of farmers from total property loss. This tow truck looks like they did the same except stretched the frame and moved the drive axles back to fit the tow bed on it.

I have a garmin dezl also and it has taken me down roads where trucks aren’t allowed or just sketchy roads. I also carry an old school atlas for when I go to places I’ve never been. A second winch line on the opposite side of trailer would have saved a little damage. But I also know those aluminum trailers don’t have much to hook too that’s solid enough to lift so maybe that was their only option. My company would have called our rotator out for this job.

Take a long strap not just hook to the pocket go All the way under the frame come threw pocket on both sides and try to lift the whole trailer body on the tow looks big enough to lift trailer and small tractors on the trailer

A 53’ spread with a long nose takes a football field to turn. I have the same set up. Keep those axles closed unless you need it to cover the weight. Saves a fortune on tires and wheel seals as well

The one thing I did notice and only because we were required to do it when undergoing crane operations if we were anywhere near the job was to wear brain buckets (hard hats). One popped cable or chain upside the head can really ruin your day.

Everybody acts like there are just rotators hanging out in every small town waiting to be dispatched to a scene. I live in Bristol where there are 3 major cities in a 40mi radius. Know how many rotators we have within a hundred miles of here? 2.. which means there’s usually not a rotator available and when there is it costs about $2k just to fire it up and point it your direction not including everything after that. I’d replace every tire on the back and take some trailer damage before I called a rotator.

From my past experiences, I've always gotten into the most trouble going through Tennessee and, Kentucky. The roads are very deceiving. Just be careful, out there.

You guys are exactly right, lifted the rear of the trailer & pulled the tow truck forward. There wasn't much weight on that trailer. I still don't understand how he got that trailer in that position...just asking.

Hey Bruce, lucky you! Some comments: A I'd done the towing/craning in a different way; not dragging the trailer sideways but lifting it up. B with the length you guys are driving with and the places you're going I'd get me a trailer with steering axles! C keep your eyes open and wishing you safe miles! I've neither driven trucks nor recovered, but I watch quite a bit of Ron Pratt on his channel. It does seem like this would be a job for a truck with a rotator boom.

Ahhh we all make mistakes, and the "TRUCKER" GPS has given me more pucker moments than I care to think about. I'm curious did you get a ticket or a fine? Glad it all worked out. I ALWAYS ran other GPS programs in tandem with the trucker gps. That thing would randomly reset at the most inconvenient times!

Late to the party here but glad that it all worked out and nothing was too badly damaged and nobody got hurt. But man that wrecker sure looked sweet! I wouldn't mind seeing a walkaround of that unit (or similar ones). Nice channel...keep up that good work!

If they would have brought a rotater it would have went a lot smoother and less repositioning they could have picked back of trailer up and swung it to the road all in 1 motion

I love my Garmin dezl 1000 for all the things it’s capable of BUT it’s still just a tool, you still have to use what’s between your ears juuuust to be sure, I trusted it a bit too much one night hauling doubles, now, I double check my route with mapping (Google Earth as well as paper) and jot down notes for my planned route. Glad everything worked out for you guys the way it did though, be safe in your travels !!!

Coming from a tow operator you should have refused that truck and requested a rotator, less damage more control . But he did ok..

Hi, wrecker driver/80 ton rotator operator here, there’s no reason to bring a rotator to this job. He did more damage to the trailer than the wrecker driver did.

Better have them check that aluminum 5th wheel. They have a tendency to crack in the webbing underneath where the anchor pins attach, and with the stress put on that one, I'd be surprised if it didn't do some damage. I managed a fleet of 28 trucks that had them, and we had a LOT of problems with cracking, and also the plastic wear plates wearing out prematurely. They look all cool and everything, and they're much lighter weight than steel ones, (which is the main reason we picked them,) but over the long haul they turned out the be a major headache and a genuine POS!!! 🤬🤬

Seems like they put a lot of stress on that trailer with not using a rotator. I am no professional tow truck driver but seemed janky.
