Screamin' Jimmies are near impossible to kill. You have a good engine. If nothing else, buy it for the engine. It's a lot of work, yes, but it's also a solid mill that's going to make an amazing roar and it deserves to roar again!

@@doughay9742 what it say? also yes, detroits are like 2jz's they are tough as fuck a guy tried to blow up a 16v detroit, and it took a while to die, had he kept oil in it it wouldnt have died, but it shot a rod out the side of the block

Absolutely right, coz every video i've seen of bruce, he always listens to the comments and "actually" puts them to good use, case in point, this freightliner, the day bruce decided not to buy it, people in the comments section started to give him advice and ideas to get it running, and he listened to those advice and got the truck running.

Easy way to check the oil on a detroit- if it's leaking, it has oil. if the leaks stop, add more oil,

Proud of you for listening..... and pulling the covers off and checking the racks & injectors. I remember when most of the 4 cycle diesel truck engines were still NA... as were the 2 cycle Detroits, and the "little" 2 cycles would "walk all over" the 4 strokes in the grades... loaded. I've owned three semi's (a 69 Pete & two Ext. hood "A" model KW's) during my years as an Owner Operator (& own authority), and all three were 12-71 powered, but I "built" them to marine specs.... was also involved with the Lady Butterfly sled pulling truck (74 Ext. hood "A" model KW) with a 12/71 which I wrenched on. I formally studied Diesel Engine Design & Theory (prep for R&D) back in the 1960's (63 to 67) for four years, my last three of which were directly under P. Nicholas who was one of the lead designers of the very first 2 cycle GM Diesel (the prototype was a 4-71), so that training served me very well in understanding, "building" and maintaining the Detroits, even though I was never a "parts changer" (mechanic), myself... as far as working at it for a living. Many people have (and still do) "bad mouthed" the 2 cycles... calling them "gutless", "torque-less", etc, etc, etc.... ALL of it spoken by people who are "Clueless".... or, more kindly... completely devoid of any real knowledge (re: understanding) of the engine itself. The fact of the matter is, they were (and still are) Far more efficient in turning fuel into power, than ANY 4 cycle diesel produced.... on far less displacement.

What amazed me is that this truck only took it 1 click to start it, no air intake issues. Sounds really healthy even though it hasn't been rebuilt yet👍. That truck deserves a full restoration indeed

One of the best thoughts about my dad being a good diesel truck mechanic is that there are still fitters out there who are working because he trained them so well. And yes, he started an apprenticeship at the age of 13 and had plenty of old 2 strokes run backwards on him and plenty of engines with faulty governors. He died in 2009 but I can still remember having long conversations with him about dry liners on Perkins and Gardner engines on UK trucks. He would have loved all these channels on YT.

I am glad you pulled the valve covers to check the fuel racks. If even one injector is stuck trying to start a Detroit without checking the fuel racks, or rack if it is a 6-71, you are almost guaranteed a runaway. I have learned a lot from following Scott at his "The Bus Grease Monkey" You Tube channel. His son Tyler also works on vintage Detroits, and he has his own channel called Indiana Diesel. Between the two of them they have forgotten more about Detroit Diesels than most people still around ever knew. They both on the 71 series Detroits and the 92 series. Most of these engines are installed in vintage buses, but Scott has also worked on a pair of Detroits in a boat, an old GMC crackerbox, and a '57 GMC flatbed truck. You should also check that the governor is operational and the emergency shut off valve is working.

That's what I said him not getting that thing running was a blessing because that thing would of ran away on his ass all would of had to do was watch Bus Grease Monkey to learn how to wake up a sleeping detroit and how to unstick stuck injectors but some folks like to learn the hard way

It wouldn't damage it running full rack. They are damn near invincible, when a Detroit truly runs away is usually when they they get the oil so hot that they start running off of the oil leaking passed the pistons and that is an event to see.Or any matter where un-metered fuel enters the chamber. They will scream well over 5000rpm with oil entering the chamber and this is when you see flames coming out of the exhaust and bellowing smoke as far as you can see. But running full rack will definitely scare you and make you panick but it's not a runaway, it's just sitting at a governed rpm. These 2 strokes sound like they are revving high but they are under 3000rpm. Heck they sound like 3000rpm at 1500.

Actually when you series batteries you double the voltage not the cranking ampe. When you parellel batteries you double the cranking amps. So a series parellel set up, you double the voltage once and double the cranking amps once. From 12 to 24 volts and from 1000 to 2000 amps

that was after he tried to fire it up not knowing the first time it was a blessing it did not start because it he could of had a run away if those injectors were stuck open

@@79tazman as I've said before it's not a run away. It sounds like it is but it's only running full rack. Like starting a car at full throttle. A run away is a non governed source of fuel which brings the rpm well beyond 5000rpm often shooting flames out the exhaust and tons of oil and soot.

Diesels to not have a firing order, natually aspirated or aspirated the air in the cylinders is compressed to the point it heats to about 1000 degrees, then sprayed w/ fuel and combustion, they will sometimes roll back and fire, running backwards.

Proud of you for listening..... and pulling the covers off and checking the racks & injectors, though using a hammer and doing it the way you did, is quick way to bend the injector control rods. Also, you had the correct number of batteries (hopefully of the correct starting CCA's as well), but you connected them wrong. They should have been connected in series for 12V, Not 24Volts. There is a Series Parallel Switch (located close to the rear of the battery box) that will boost the Voltage to 24V when the key is turned to the Starting Circuit. The fuel tanks should have been drained, and some fresh fuel added, as well as the primary and secondary fuel filters replaced and primed.... or at least primed with fresh fuel, and all the fuel lines checked for hardening and splitting after sitting for so long. Also, I doubt that, that freightliner is a "73" unless it was repowered at some point, because DD did not even introduce the Series 92 until 74. I remember when most of the 4 cycle diesel truck engines were still NA... as were the 2 cycle Detroits, and the "little" 2 cycles would "walk all over" the 4 strokes in the grades... loaded. Thank you for checking the injectors. Detroit's are pretty easy to work on really. A full inframe overhaul sending the heads out for rebuild, new sleeves and rings and rod berings about $4500. Around $1800 clutch and pressure plate kit. $4500 or so for tires. Definitely pull the oil pan and inspect all quite basic really. Starting that easily after 20 years suggest it was cared for when it was on the road. I really love the Detroit engine.

By the way it is typically a 4, 6 volt battery setup as the 6 volt batteries offer more cranking capasity.

My company still uses a 73 cabover non sleeper as a yarddog. It has a 8v71 unknown mileage. Still starts right up!!!!

I am glad you did not stop the restoration of this old girl. She deserve a good home.. when you connected those batteries, I knew you didn't have enough energy for that motor. I only just turned on your video and your just introducing me to what you've bought. I will continue with the watch in a few seconds. For me, it is a Good Choice of truck. I have a chance for a '73 White Freightliner COE. I just can't afford it. I drove one of those back in the day... So your project to me, is worth a watch and subscription.. I have no mechanical back ground, but i am very interested in how your vision is of this beast.. Keep up the great work, and I hope your hand is feeling better..

I learned about the fuel racks from Deboss. A very helpful thing to know on these old Detroits. We all learn something even when we think we’ve learned it all.

I knew you would get it started. If you purchase it you will find it is a 12 volt system. You would need to check the starter to see if it is 24 volts. If is 24 volts then the truck had a series parallel switch at the battery box. But if the starter is 12 volts then it had 3 or 4 batteries wired parallel to the starter. Also the way it started and died I am guessing it needs fuel filters.

Yep, the speed that was cranking on 24v seems it is a 12v system. It ran on the fuel that was still in the head but had lost it's prime plus it wasn't running on all 8. $4K is a driver in my neck of the woods.

Pull the injector. Spray with pb blaster in the tiny hole near the top of the injector And tap on the top with a plastic or rubber malat. If it sprays out the bottom then u got it free unstuck.

Glad you didn’t give up on it. Looks like it could be a nice truck if you decide to take it. Have you considered putting a different engine in it? You would be fixing it up anyway might as well give it a better motor. Keep up the good work it’s fascinating.

Every one does peterbilts and such not often to see a white freightliner. Its in good shape. Dont just give up the old girl. She has life in her and the fact she started is saying she wants to live.

I , ( many yrs ago ) , used to drive a White Road Commander , powered by a Jimmy , it was Awesome , and hauling 40 ton pay load of raw coal was no trouble to the rig and its Power plant ; I also had a 13 R R Box . Good Luck with the White , Great trucks , ( in my opinion ) !

Duuuuude don't put a spanner on top of the batteries like that unless you're looking to weld the spanner to the battery! Your angry pixie maths is off, you don't get double current capacity when wiring in series, only in parallel, so 2 925 CCA batteries in series still only give you 925 CCA, but at 24V instead of 12V. So with four 12V 925 CCA batteries in a 2x2 configuration of parallel and series, you'd have about 1850 CCA @ 24V, still a pretty beefy amount of current though!

Yep dood ya right ...l how do I know ??? Coz many moons ago I had a new snap on extension roll across the terminals and sparks.flew off of the battery and it tried welding itself to the posts . Never done that again and never leave a spanner on the battery in case it gets knocked or slips against the terminals

Bruce, I really enjoy your channel, especially ”will it start”. I have never worked on a car other than basic stuff, but you make it so interesting and I learn so much. Looks and sounds to me like you have a running cab over, don’t give up on it, buy it and make it the show truck you talked about, it will be way cooler and more unique than that day cab. Also, had it started the first day you would be the new owner. It needs work yes, but your plan was a full frame off restoration, give it the love it needs, you won’t regret it!
