4:45 This is an example of what fascinates me about Bruckner’s late style. Listen to those chords! They sound almost Phrygian. It’s as if he had heard some Debussy, yet to the best of our knowledge he wouldn’t have!

Bruckner has so much tonal modulation. Was he the one that Mahler learned that from?

I'm not sure. Bruckner was also, like Mahler, influenced by Wagner. Bruckner reworked many of his symphonies adding Wagnerian harmonies. You might be meaning Wagnerian harmonies when referring to frequent modulation. Bruckner was also a great master of counterpoint.
