@PrimericanIdol Hahaha.....this was YES in '89. Of course they were called Anderson, Bruford, Wakeman & Howe, But T-Lev is my fav and filled in well for Squire. And don't tell Fripp, but I bootlegged KC in '84 in Boston........

LIVE AT JONES BEACH, NYC August 10. 1989. The only Soundboard/Video recording with Tony Levin. The greatest full length bootleg concert of all time!

I knew Tony Levin was and still is in a class all his own but I didn’t know that he could slap like Flea! I think he takes off the “Funk Fingers” first and then he goes full-on slap-silly. I have nothing against bassist Jeff Berlin. He’s incredible! However, it would’ve been nice if Tony hadn’t fallen ill during the Anderson Bruford Wakeman Howe tour. Why do I say that? Because the group released a live album and it was after Tony Levin had been replaced by Jeff Berlin on bass. Having become a big Tony Levin fan through his playing with the 80’s lineup of King Crimson and his playing with Peter Gabriel and others, I was really looking forward to hearing him play those old Yes songs like Close To The Edge, Starship Trooper, Heart Of The Sunrise, and the ABWH songs. It’s no big deal. I got over it and I totally respect Jeff Berlin’s abilities. It’s just that Levin is one of my all-time favorite bassists. His command of the Chapman stick is top notch. In his autobiography, Bruford says, “The stick an unusual kind of stringed instrument, half in the treble register and half in the bass, played by tapping with the fingers of both hands as opposed to plucking with the fingers of the right hand only. It’s an unfeasibly tricky beast, and Tony is the leading authority on it in a pack of about ten.”

Bruford is not underrated, just about everyone knows he is one of the best. He delivers percussion clinics all over the world.

If I'm not mistaken this was the bass and drum 'solo' from the Anderson, Bruford, Wakeman, Howe Tour... right?
@billzebubba15 жыл бұрын
That was just the duet. For a lot of the rest of the ABWH show, Bruford did what he needed to do, whether it be his signature snare rolls, or whatever. You have to remember that at this point in time, he had already been in both Yes and Crimson, and had quite the sound palette to choose from. Finally hearing him play his parts for "Close to the Edge" and "And You and I"--live at last--were historically monumental high points. The duet was more of a friendly duel, akin to "Indiscipline" live.

Hopefully, a recording of this (or a variation) will be on the forthcoming ABWH Live at NEC CD, out in November.

@SALFARFAN I think he is kind of underrated because most people know he is one of the best, but no too many people realize that he IS the best!

I'm fairly certain that Mr Levin toured with ABWH during Squire's hiatus from Yes. I saw the show in Holmdel NJ in 198?.

They say that if you're in the market for quality home speakers,,, if you turn it up loud and they can handle Levin's bass... buy them! If they can withstand that Animal's bass, they can certainly withstand sounds from a regular human

@larkydozer I think you hit it on the head --- Flea. Then there's Les Claypool -- but he does so much more with any of it --- and it's so crazy the way HE approaches the bass that it sort of transcends my own sense of taste. Anyway, don't want to spend much time being critical, especially where Bruford and Levin are concerned.
@larkydozer14 жыл бұрын
@nobodady1 Not so sure that that particular sound has gone "out". The MusicMan bass is still hugely popular and in funk music there's a lot of that technique employed. Maybe what you're thinking about is how every American bass player of a certain age wanted to be Flea, from 1989-1994 and had the trebly sound as a result?
@NikolaiDubinin15 жыл бұрын
this fragment was taken from ABWH live show, not Crimson. right in the end you can see Anderson approaching. fantastic anyway!!!

Yes, it was the ABWH tour at Jones Beach, New York. I have the concert on video, but I would love to find it on DVD. Anyone know where I can get a copy of it?

One word, AMAZING. Two words BLOODY AMAZING. Bruford is a underatted drummer and Levi untill his work with LTE, did not much parise for his brilliant bass playing. All in all good job by both players.

Those long spidery looking things that Levin plays with... They look totally badass. But what are they? Does anybody know?
@nobodady114 жыл бұрын
@larkydozer --- I guess you're right about the "fingers" -- but I just mean that kind of extreme snapping and popping style --- which the "fingers" pretty much sound like. Well, Levin is great. I guess that super percussive and trebly style is not my cup of tea --- when I feel it is overdone.

This isn't King Crimson - it's post Crimson. After the Prima-donna-Fripp broke up the band (again) in the mid 80's, Levin and Bruford came out with some recordings and did a bit of touring. Bill stated in his autobiography that he really got along with Levin and appreciated working with him.

Strange encounter on stage at 4:13 - are the two guys playing in the same band? Do they know each other? The one so earthbound, the other probably a bit over-spiritualized ...

I was disappointed after Union - I thought ABWH's second album would crush it, but then they did the Union thing instead. Levin was just coming into his own with them and what a band what would have been!
@larkydozer14 жыл бұрын
@nobodady1 Just wanted to add to your commentary. There isn't a single bass player aside from Levin who uses those "funk fingers" that he's using in this clip. Maybe you're talking about his tone or some other aspect of his playing?
@nobodady114 жыл бұрын
I'm glad those damn octagonal drums went out of style --- as well as this kind of bass playing. I love these guys --- but the 80's had some fads for sure.
@BLooDCoMPleX15 жыл бұрын
Completely agreed. The new music they do was just... fun I suppose? Maybe Fripp tried to something like Zappa wilth Belew. Or maybe he simply ran out of creativity. Who knows... Still, King Crimson is one of the bests all the time.

Can anyone hear Peter Gabriel's "I Go Swimming" @ 1:19? Have to say I'm very disappointed with Bruford's insistence on machine gun snare blasts. I thought a drummer of his calibre would find them as annoying as hell. He's got a perfectly good acoustic snare under that trigger pad....why didn't he use that?

How did someone manage to get a camera past Fripp's personal KGB militia? you know that bootlegging gets you the death penalty @ the Court of The Crimson King, right? I'd flee the Crimson Kingdom if i were you :P Maybe Yes will offer you exile :P
