Well done in getting to the top of the Bell Tower. Just as well you are both fit and not "a bunch of f****n elephants" (see the movie, "In Bruges.") 😂 p.s. Benjamin Franklin was a great guy. Born in 1706 and already he's tasted beer and talking (see 21:54). 😂

I have been a few times and it never disappoints. A very charming place. Only can be too busy in a peak tourist times. So best to go off season. Enjoy yourselves guys. Always so lovely to watch your adventures.

I’m from South Wales but spent 5 years from 1999 qorking in Amsterdam. You will love it. The city is really good but can shock some people. The Red Light District is not to everyone’s taste, but, if its not desire it is clearly designated and the rest of the city is “normal”. Amsterdam is not the Netherlands, try and take the train or bus out to the countryside like Edam or Volendam. The trains in the Netherlands, not cheap, but cover the country. When you get off the train at Amsterdam Centraal you soon realise the bicycle is the king/queen. There are more bikes than people. When you exit the station ther’s a large multistorey bike park over the canal boat yard.

You're right. Nutella is a European invention so we're more into it. When it comes to chocolate, Belgians are also into the very similar praline too.

Hope you enjoyed Bruges. I went for a week a couple of years ago. Luckily, I stayed in a city centre hotel. Our group did the usual things, visiting a chocolate shop and a brewery. Belgian beer can be very strong. The Trappist Monks brew some heavy stuff. The one thing they and the Dutch do is that their beers come in matching glasses. The main tour for us was to Flanders & Ypres. The old battlefields are perhaps not the joyous places to visit on a holiday but they were very interesting and moving. You are both too young for memories of WWI but I am in my 70’s so I remember old folks from my village who were WWI veterans. My last teacher in primary school (I was eleven) was a sufferer, although light) of gas in the trenches.

When in doubt..leave. Good choice. PS I’m reminded of the scene in In Bruge where Farrells character advises tourists…

We haven't seen the movie before, but we're thinking we might watch it this weekend. It'll be so cool to recognize the locations.

The view from the bell tower was awesome! Did the bell ringing hurt your ears?

Oh yes! We definitely wouldn't want it as our alarm in the morning. 😅

What! ,you didn't try the beer ? The home of the best beers in the world ,boy did you miss out on the finest thing in Bruges

I (Brian) had some the first night, and during at least one of our dinners. Can't remember which ones at this point (they were Belgian, but I have no idea which brands), and I'm far from a beer connoisseur, but I DO remember beers that I enjoy and don't enjoy -- and all the ones I tasted in Bruges made a good impression. 🍻 Any recommendations for the best Belgian beers? I'd be curious to track them down and give them a proper try.

Interesting that you had no big expectations of Bruges. It definitely has a rep as a romantic historical city. My parents took a trip there to try to save their marriage. Failed, but they both agreed it was very nice. You have been to other cities with canals, like Edinburgh and London. But probably not so concentrated and abundant.

That's quite the emotional plot twist with the attempt to save the marriage (we're sorry to hear it didn't work out 😕). Can't fault them for choosing Bruges; it definitely checks the romantic box. Yeah, we weren't too familiar with the city's reputation; just the lovely aesthetics. Interestingly, we had both Brussels and Bruges on the list heading into the trip, but in an attempt to both avoid the mistakes of Liverpool and Belfast, and to squeeze in a return to a certain Scottish city we adored so much (I believe you may be familiar with it 😉), we decided to drop one of the Belgian cities. After some Googling and reading through some Reddit threads (which all unanimously agreed Bruges is the place to visit between the two), we gave it a chance.

Belgian chocolate is great but how could you not try their beer? You only have about 300+ to choose from. Let's start an argument about the best ones. Duvel or Leffe Brun for me.

I (Brian) had some the first night, and during at least one of our dinners. Admittedly, I can't remember which ones I ordered; all I remember is that they were local to Belgium. But they WERE good! We'll have to track down some of everyone's recommendations and try them. Perhaps a little beer tasting/comparison video...

Where was the Italian place?

With the pasta in the cheese wheel? It was an outdoor stand in a Christmas market near the city center. Not sure if those stands stay up year-round or if they went down after the holiday. Sadly we can't remember what the business was called, or if they were representing a local restaurant.
