A beautiful little canal, white painted houses, vast fields surrounding the village - it seems that time here has stopped. Lissevege (Lissewege) is considered one of the most picturesque and "exemplary" Flemish villages: charming and romantic, with light notes of nostalgia for the past blossoming. The name Lisse-wege is supposedly derived from two words liso (the name of the Celtic leader) and wega (which in Celtic means the house). The canal that ran through the village was once used to transport limestone from the Belgian town of Turna, and today its embankments are a place for leisurely walks. Above the village dominates the brick church of Our Lady (Onze-Lieve-Vrouw-Bezoekingkerk) XIII century - a perfect example of "Brabant Gothic". In the XII century here in the fortification tower, surrounded by a double moat (Upperhof), lived the Lords of Lissevege, although the area was inhabited before. The castle to our days, unfortunately, is not preserved. In 1106, Lord Lambert of Lissewerge (Lambert, Heer van Lissewege) presented a piece of land to the French Benedictines who founded their abbey Ter Doest here. Over time, around the abbey, which went to the Cistercians, there were farming. Unfortunately, only the dovecote, the lodge and the barn of the 13th century have survived from the whole complex of the abbey to our days. In the Middle Ages the village of Lissevege was one of the transit points for pilgrims to Santiago de Compostela, largely due to their donations and gifts, the village flourished. And then plunged into a dream like Bruges and Damme. Now Lissevege attracts artists and just lovers to wander through the preserved cozy streets.
