I live in belgium and I would add an important point : Keep in mind that each city has a french name and a dutch name, and they can be very different, so you could have severe trouble to know where you are if nobody tells you this fact. Also the trainstations use the name depending of their region, so everything will be in french in wallonia, but once the train will reach a dutch city the name will be in dutch so you could believe you aren't at the good place and stay in the train, you won't be noticed when you cross the regions and if you don't be carefull you could believe you are in a different country in 10 minutes, that's totaly normal in Belgium. Be careful because most tourist I meet are lost or struggle to find some places. Also most people doesn't speak both languages, so I suggest to use english if you can. I would also add that the country is very windy, and the wind comes from the north, so when it's 20°C outside it's like 15°C. Only 2 or 3 month at summer are sunny and tolerable, the rest of the yeat it's rainy and cold. You could also struggle to find a public bathroom, according to the law each city must have toilet, but they are often very well hidden, broken, or dirty, so go to the toilet at the trainstations or in a shop/coffee. The Ardenens are nice but be carefull with bikes, because it's never flat, if you are bad a sport it won't be cool for you. The bus are often kind of random when you leave a big city, the could be very late, I personnaly don't trust them as a citizen when I have a meeting. The trains are often late and you can easily miss your correspondence, they are also overcrowed, especially during friday and sunday. Overcrowed means it's impossible to sit. You can also visit Walibi Belgium if you like RollerCoasters, or Pairi Daiza if you like animals, it's a super nice theme park, but it's only good during summer, I suggest to visit the caves when it's cold outside, it's less overcrowded and the temperature is always the same underground.
@fiebelodewijckx7392 жыл бұрын
I also live in Belgium and agree with the most you say but not about public transportation. I lived in other places and compared to them we have a good transportation system. You can go to almost everywhere with it. And even when they're late there are a lot of other options so when you really need to be somewhere on time and you need to take a correspondence maybe take not the last one but the one before. Also we have a great online system where you can look where the bus, metro, tram, train is at the moment and how long it will take. (that's not commen in a lot of countries). it is not that expensive compared to for example the netherlands. you also have not a lot of companies who are in charge. Train: NMBS, bus and tram: Delijn (Flanders), TEC (Walonia) and MIVB (Brussels). People here are known for whining about the public transportation 😉 So I just think for tourists is depends on how the public transportation is in their home country to say if it is good or bad.
@FoXMaSteR0012 жыл бұрын
@@fiebelodewijckx739 The problem is the "one before" is usualy 1 hour before, in the Ardennes that's 1 big train each hour, and at best 1 bus every 30 minutes. That wouldn't be a problem in a sunny country, but this is very cold and waiting in the wind isn't great, many stations has nothing to hide if you visit small cities (I only speak for the Ardennes area). I took the train a least 2000 times in my life and only 2 of them arrived at time, I wasted many DAYS in total in these trainstations, Namur is the worst, of course most of trains aren't late, but at 4pm it's 100% for sure. At some point "5 minutes late" was an happy day for me. The year 2010 was the worst, about 15-30 min late everyday during a month, obviously in december. 5 minutes isn't a lot if you stop in the next station, but in a trip of 1 hour it becomes 1,5 hour at the end. Bruxelles - Luxembourg is the worst line in my opinion. I hate cold so much I'm thinking about leaving the country, the lack of sun is also a problem to me, my health is bad half a year 😢 but during summer days I agreee this is a nice country ofc :P

When we arrive; we will travel to Brugges and Ghent from Brussels by train (one day to Ghent from Brussels and the next day to Brugges from Brussels) so on the train stops, does it also write or speak in English? Will we be able to see or hear the name of the train stop in English? If not, can you please write the possible names of Brussels, Ghent and Brugges we can see while travelling on the train? Thank you so much 🤗 i am quite scared now as we will also travel with our 4 years old daughter so wouldnt want to end up stressing. ☘️

I've lived and studied in Bruges for over 5 years and having seen many different places around the world, I always feel like home. Despite the incredible amount of tourists wandering around parts of the city, it never feels overcrowded (or loud) as it were. With its many alleys and tiny streets, you can easily feel like travelling back in time.

Just got back from Antwerp. Wow! The food, the beer, the architecture are tremendous. Plus, it’s a pretty good bike city. I biked all over and across the Scheldt river in the underground tunnel.

Great video. I moved to Belgium from the UK twenty years ago and never regretted it. Such a small country with a rich history and culture. The people here are friendly and generally well educated. The food and beers are excellent, standard of living is high and a fantastic health service. I would also add Liege and Namur to the list of cities to visit. you can also be at the coast in an hour from Brussels and visit Knokke which although over developed has great shopping and some great seaside restaurants, worth a day visit. The negatives are that there are way too many chocolate shops, especially in Bruges and Brussels is not the cleanest city in the world! If anyone is thinking of visiting Belgium and needs some advice then let me know in the replies section.

As someone who lives in Belgium, I'd love to add 2 places to this list: 1) Lier. It is a beautiful small city between Antwerp and Mechelen (with great train acces from both those 2 cities). It has beautiful medieval elements like the city square, churches, beguinage, moats, ... It's smaller than Bruges en not very well known, so there are almost no tourists! It's also home to the famous Zimmer tower and museum (it's that tower with a bunch of clockfaces and globes, look it up ;-)). 2) Bokrijk. It's an amazing open air museum with houses, towns, playspaces, ... with a bunch of old architecture and actors playing the roles of inhabitants. Lovely to visit, especially with children since there are a bunch of activities tailored to children!

I would strongly recommand not to taste everything on the first day like I did. We arrived in Brussels, we bought 1kg of neuhaus prallines but after an hour I ate them all, because they were so yummy. You have all those wonderful smells so after 1kg of pralines I took a Liege waffle with lots of sugar. While walking we saw those fries which we tasted with stofvleis (or something, because they recommanded it) sauce and mayonaise. We ended the day drinking different beers and eating mussles. At night, I felt horrible sick. The next day we drove to Ghent and my stomach was killing me, all I ate that day was some soup.
