The one thing I will say in defense of Esme's actress is: Esme is a Lee, who are mixed Romani/Irish Traveler, and still "wild" as opposed to the Shelbys. So she's not truly from Birmingham, but the surrounding country, and an insular community. Really a bit of a wonder her accent is quite as Brummie as it is...

This is Great! I just started watching Peaky Blinders on Netflix and I have to TURN ON THE SUBTITLES!!!! I am from the midwestern US and father is Irish, so I don't have a problem with that accent. I can understand Cockney, RP, Welsh and Scottish. But this one is tricky. The show is very good so I will keep watching. Maybe one day I will be able to speak Birmingham English. My Mother is Cuban and my wife is Mexican so my Spanish is very good. But there are certain accents in Spanish that give me trouble. I used to have trouble with Colombian Spanish until I started watching "telenovelas" from there. I think I am going to do the same thing with the Spanish accents I have trouble with (like the Dominican Republic accent). You and your partner are so good in these videos especially the use of humor (humour - haha - maybe that could be the subject of a video, the spelling differences, like realize and realise :)

That's quite interesting to hear. I'm not a native english speaker but I had no trouble whatsoever watching the show. I've only been to London once when I was 17 and otherwise acquired all my english skills playing videogames online and meeting people. And I most certainly have never met a dude from Birmingham. So perhaps it's easier for someone like me rather than native english speakers not from the UK.

The actor that plays John (and his brother who plays Michael) both are from Birmingham. Funny enough, with the Rs at the end of certain words, New Yorkers do it too. I've heard someone say Pizzer before. It's weird, New York has like 6 distinct accents that we here being from here.

I'm a Brummie, the youngest of my family born in '64 My Father was the second youngest of HIS family, born in 1920. Several of his older siblings were of the 19th century. I remember when I was very young, the way my Aunt's & Uncles spoke. It was staccato & direct, almost aggressive, everything they said was like a challenge to disagree, they almost didn't blink their eyes. Their speech was also much quicker than I remember from later on. When I've seen Peaky Blinders, that's what strikes me as slightly off pitch, the actors are imitating modern speech, early 20th century Brummie would have been far faster & aggressive sounding. The streets of Birmingham were quite tough places, it made hard people.

I'd love you to analyse Catherine Tate Show episode when she does brummie accent as a dogs' trainer I guess the only difference is that she probably slightly axaggerates coz it's a comedy sketch and it's absolutely hilarious BTW I know someone from B- ham,his nickname is "Tony the moaner"every time I talk to him he sounds like he's ill or there's something wrong with him He is a real character Anyway his favourite catch-phrase is :"The stupid Gohvement"or "I'm fed op with this stupidity and silliness" I think if you really want to do good Birmingham accent you need to moan a bit and pretend at least that you're not that well It'd definitely make it sound better ! Благодарю за видео! Очень интересно смотреть) Как относитесь к австралийскому акценту? Я слышал, что многие его не любят... особенно в Америке. Обратил на это внимание, когда смотрел сериал "Оранжевый - хит сезона" ("Orange is a new black"). В 3 сезоне появляется австралийская актриса Руби Роуз (Ruby Rose), и другие герои сериала говорят, что ее акцент их бесит. Комментарий специально написал на русском, чтобы показать, что и в России ваши видео востребованы)
