Thanks for the video John. :o) I am still learning leathercraft, and I have already made a couple of pieces, though mostly pouches and knife sheaths for Viking Re-enactment... I was curious about you using first SnowProof coating, THEN applying Carnauba Cream... I would have thought the heavier Wax content of the SnowProof would have blocked some or all of the Carnauba cream from Penetrating the leather? Surely applying neatsfoot Oil, then Carnauba Cream, then SnowProof would be the more beneficial sequence to apply? I normally use just some Neatsfoot Oil or Mink Oil followed by some natural beeswax and elbow grease, as the Vikings wouldn't have had access to the more modern combination applications such as Carnauba Cream or Aussie wax etc...

Very Nice John! I need to get one of those snap setters!! I liked especially how you showed the finish coats and creams. That has always been a question for me Thank you for sharing!!

They do make the job much easier to do especially if you’re doing a lot of them, thanks for the comment, atb John.

Great work as usual John. What brand mallet and maul do you use?. Assume they are made of brass. Softer than what you are hitting so no damage to tools.
@Brummiejohn2006 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the comment, the mallet is home made using an old mallet handle i had, atb John.

Stumbled upon one of your videos today, and sure glad that I did. You do some beautiful work - I have always thought of doing some of my own leather work and watching this makes me want to take the plunge. What sort of leather are you starting with? Where can I get a good piece of leather like that and what exactly is that starting material called? Thanks so much for your videos! Looking forward to watching lots more!
@Brummiejohn2007 жыл бұрын
Thank you for your comments, the leather I use mostly is vegetable tanned shoulder but I don't know what country you live in to tell where to get it from, atb John.
@erikjoven23887 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the reply! I live in the U.S. So if i am looking for veg. tanned shoulder, is there a particular thickness/weight you look for for projects such as your Possibles Belt Pouch or Laplander Sheath?
@Brummiejohn2007 жыл бұрын
I tend to buy 3-3.5mm thick leather I don't know what that is in oz's, hope this helps, John.
@erikjoven23887 жыл бұрын
That helps a bunch - most of the websites i looked at to try and buy some leather gave average thicknesses in mm as well as weights. Thanks so much for taking the time to answer these questions!! Going to buy a basic set of leatherworking tools, a chunk of leather and some thread and see what comes out! Can't thank you enough for taking the time here and for your very helpful videos!!

@@Brummiejohn200 OK. Thanks anyway. I was just trying to save myself the trouble of making a pattern and trying to get a sheath built at the same time.

What weight of leather did you use? Thank you!
@Brummiejohn2006 жыл бұрын
The leather is 3-3.5mm thick I have no idea what that is in weight we don’t use that system in the UK sorry, John.
