One of the best knife builds on KZbin, its my favorite size of blade. I think companies kind of miss the mark in this area of bushcraft knives, there are plenty if neck knives made by regular knife companies but this size of belt knife that fits all of your fingers filling your whole hand is perfect. I just made a Mora Eldris with a nice plumb tree wood handle, its so comfortable now and I was able to still use the original sheath. After watching this video you now have me on my way to a leather one 😉
@JimsonMakes7 жыл бұрын
Thank you very much, I really appreciate your very kind words. I agree that this is a very useful size and shape. For many bushcraft applications a smaller blade is actually easier to use. Give the leather sheath a go, it is a very satisfying process. Cheers, Jim

My husband makes knives and machetes to use around the house (cutting limbs off trees etc). He has asked me to make him a sheath for a few of them, including a knife his late grandfather gave him. I decided this is the year I'm going to go all out and truly get into leather work. I will also be making leather journals for my children, specifically my middle child who also wants to start writing with quills in their journaling. You did an AMAZING job!!! I am wondering if you could list the products you used. I am researching tools as we speak and would prefer to purchase items that I don't have to immediately return due to being cheap/breaking/not working. Thanks so much!! Again, wonderful work. You truly inspired me and I had watched over 10 videos until I came across yours.
@JimsonMakes7 жыл бұрын
Thank you for your very kind words. Leatherwork is very enjoyable and satisfying, but it can be a bit costly when first setting yourself up with the necessary kit. I gradually added to my tool and finish collection over a year or two, and I didn't buy too many tools to begin with. You can get by with very few tools but having the right tools does make it much easier. I would recommend you take a look at Ian Atkinson on KZbin, his leatherwork videos are excellent and he also gives great advice on tools and finishes. It is difficult to recommend tools and products as many of them are job specific. I get most of my tools from a company called Goods Japan, their tools are good quality at a reasonable price. Tandy leather are also good if you have one near you. I really like Fiebings dyes, and their Aussie Leather conditioner is excellent. The thread I use is called Ritza 25 Tigre thread (1mm) with John James Saddlers needles. I hope this is of some help. Let me know if there is a specific item that you need info on and I will try and remember what it is. All the best, Jim
@SusiQf7 жыл бұрын
I watched your video several times, even skipping ahead just to get product names such as what you used to condition and protect the leather. Everything is spot on with what you listed!! I was wondering if you have a video on how you made your sewing pony or could direct me to one? I did go ahead and buy all the "main tools" and items I see many people using, including yourself. I bought it all off Amazon. I tried to find tools Amazon recommended, and actually people bought. Read TONS of reviews and chose whichever I thought would do the job for now. I figure I'm only dabbling, if anything breaks I won't be out too much rather than buy something expensive and it be junk. I truly appreciate how fast you responded and how detailed you were in your reply. Talented and an extraordinary person. I really, REALLY appreciate it!! Thank you from the bottom of my heart.

Thank you, I am glad I was able to help. I am sorry I have not replied to this message earlier, I have only just spotted it, I don't always get email notification of messages. @JimsonMakes8 жыл бұрын
Thanks again Heath, the wet moulding of the leather makes a big difference to the fit. I let the sheath partly dry with the wrapped knife inside and then take the knife out and let it dry completely, it seems to shrink a fraction which really grips the knife well. Cheers, Jim

Thanks Paul, I will check out the link. Some of the leather cord is very poor quality and has many hidden glue joints in it that create weak spots and areas that will not take the dye. Great video, but I missed a couple things. Why does only one side get the stitch groove? And how did you transfer the stitch holes through the other two layers (the welt and the other side of the sheath)?
@JimsonMakes5 жыл бұрын
Thank you very much Fred. When the 2 sides are glued together I then use an awl to transfer the holes through, making sure I keep it perfectly upright so that the holes on the other side come through in line. I then remove the guide from the stitch groover and follow the line of holes to form the groove. Cheers Jim
