I agree with all you said, Paul and yet cannot understand how you see Maderna as fundamentally harmonic music as opposed to Webern who you do not. Please inform.

@@joshsussman9432 Hi I can hear a more modal approach from Moderna and actually vertical movement in his works, where the dry static Anton has never turned me on. I guess of course I am a bit subjective.

@@paulamrod537 Interesting. I am a listener for over 30 years to serial music and perhaps, maybe Maderna is slightly more gestural and uses a few more simultaneities than Webern. If that's what you're picking up on then you have a very good ear!

I would say the debt to Webern is somewhat obvious and undeniable. That said there is a freedom not found in Webern. And while it is unlikely that he had heard Carters first string quartet it would seem there are gestures, sound clusters and partial recapitulations not found in Webern.

Real talk: Elliott Carter remains my favorite composer of all time. The swerp of EC from the early and brilliant chamber works to the monstrous orchestral works of the 60's, 70's and 80's, the later piano solo pice Night Fantasies are incomparable. Finally, blessed by length of days the truly late works like the two clarinet pieces are quite good. Unfortunately Maderna's life was tragically cut short. But what he did accomplish i think he will ultimately be received as one of the greatest serialists to have ever comlosed with the big three of the 2nd Vienesse school, Babbitt and perhaps a couple others. A few of the spectralists beginning with Ligeti are quite respectable but for me the era ushered in by Schoenberg works best.
