Bette Davis was a master of her craft! Nobody even comes close. Great film! 🎬 📽 🎞

Better Davis gave some truly magnificent performances at her best but she also gave a good number of awful performances. You were always aware of her exaggerated mannerisms. Like Katharine Hepburn, she could be truly great, but her range was limited. Barbara Stanwyck, Joan Crawford, and Loretta Young had much greater range and versatility and in their best performances easily matched or exceeded Bette Davis. They never did cheap self parodies as Bette Davis did in her later years.

I know that you all thought Richard Todd was very good in this role, but perhaps you should also be aware he is a Sandhurst graduate, officer and war hero. He was the first out of the plane on D-Day as he was in the 6th Airborne Division parachuting into France. His mission was to take the Pegasus Bridge near Caen. The taking of this bridge was crucial for armor to cross in order to attack Caen and was prominently featured in the movie "The Longest Day". The lines were "Hold the bridge until relieved" in which Todd played Major Howard, his commander, but another actor played his part in that engagement. Todd also fought in the Battle of the Bulge as well as counter-insurgency operations in Palestine where he was seriously injured in a jeep accident breaking both shoulders and getting a concussion.

This film is an art form with a number of very fine actors, especially Richard Todd, Dan O'Herlihy and Herbert Marshall. Bette Davis goes without saying naturally. Hollywood takes great liberty with dates and historical facts so such a film cannot be taken seriously as far as history is concerned. They attempt to show the architecture, furniture and clothing of the time which gives the impression. Thank you for sharing this film. For those who don't know Herbert Marshall (Earl of Leicester) had only one leg. The other was artificial. He lost his leg in the 1914-18 war known as the Great War, The war to end all wars and the first World War. He had a long and illustrious career and the Hollywood of that time accepted his limitations and always made an effort to compensate.
@eileen18208 жыл бұрын
Thanks for sharing the info about Herbert Marshall and recommendation for tempering entertainment value with relativity inaccurate historical information. I wonder how this movie was received by British, with an American, Bette Davis, playing the Queen Elizabeth. I know Renee Zellweger playing Bridget Jones was bothersome to the English, so I can only imagine how Bette Davis playing this role felt (smile).
@globalman8 жыл бұрын
Eileen D Interesting thought. I don't know how Bette was received. I certainly understand about Zellweger. I mean there are scores of UK, Canadian, Australian, New Zealand actors who play American roles but they do it with a brilliance that is without compare. American actors on the other hand have not the competence. Mostly their attempts to play any British roles are lamentable in my experience. Naturally there are no comparable personalities to Elizabeth I in American History.

I was paraphrasing Peter, Paul and Mary: Where have all the flowers gone, long time passing? Where have all the flowers gone, long time ago? Where have all the flowers gone? The sad, sad part is that almost nothing has been pasted on, that essence of art, the burning light that must be verbally communicated and demonstrated to the next budding generation otherwise it dies. We have some genius here and there but the it isn't enough! You need and extraordinary supporting cast as well. At least the living past in videos, etc. preserve the legacy. Will it be enough?

Sadly Kurt Douglas is the last at 102 years old. When he passes. There'll be no more of the truely greats. Movies today are all action with no real plot. With stiff acting. With no heart for the business. The world will morn when Kurt passes. What do I mean by heart. Kurt acted in a movie shortly after his stroke. The movie was called diamond's.
