If you want to learn anything about the Roman Empire, Mary Beard is the person to watch. She is MAGNIFICENT. Dr. Beard brings history to life and while she does this, she invites us to question issues of civics, ethics, economics, politics, sociology. I could go on... just watch her.

Apparently not. Winning ancient battles was "strength of numbers, attacking from behind , starving your enemies out and luck"? Caesar COULD have eyes on the entire battle field because they used scouts and runners and well yes those things did happen it's a bit more than that otherwise anyone could do it. Anyone did not............the greats won battles consistently for a reason. Another person with a lot of education and no critical thinking skills it would seem. Caesar(who she's talking about when making that quote) is literally the prime example of winning battles consistently having NONE of those things going for him lol.

Then the dumb comment about the aquaducts..........suggesting they were just pomp and show lol. You have to keep the flow or water at a minor minor pace over miles and miles of terrain since water doesn't flow up hill..........meaning if you across a valley YES you need those huge aquaducts to maintain the flow properly. What a doink lol. The aren't there for show. They didn't have the fossil fuel age to power massive water pumps.

Mary Beard is incredible, and thanks to her, I have learned that the history of Rome is endlessly compelling. The colonial-imperial model of empire was perfected in a special way by Rome, and is iterated to this day by would-be conquering entities. It is the context we live in, the water we swim in. Beard’s expert appreciation is such a good education for all of us laypeople.

One minor contrasting opinion to a statement on Boudicca, perhaps she was a brutal leader because the Romans took everything from her...they flogged her...they RAPED her DAUGHTERS...her own children...this wasn't just leading, it was revenge....perhaps had she won, her leadership would have been different than her revenge. Perhaps, Great Britain would have become something entirely different, sure, but it wouldn't necessarily have been bad... because to Romans were brutal too...never ever forget the slaughter they wrought across some of the largest swaths of the world ...just because they created some good things didn't mean they were good...just because Boudicca was brutal in her revenge doesn't mean she was bad....

One of the best documentary about Rome I've ever watched, thank you! Highly recommend the 1950's famous British travel writer H V Morton's book "A Traveller in Rome", he went deep dive into the eternal city, basically living like a local, sharing its history, architectures, different cultures/people of various neighborhoods, religious insights, & eating at hundred years old coffee/tea shops. I learned so much. Rome really is an unique city that one can travel to so many times yet still finding new discoveries around the corners each time.

AFTER WATCHING DR. BEARD'S ROMAN DOCUMENTARIES, AND HEARING HER REMARK UPON "Rome's Invisible People", I catch myself wondering about those sorts whenever I stop into A STARBUCK'S or BURGER KING. But if I contemplate my own profession-I am a professional jockey-and a winning one, at that. Last year I finished "in the money"-if not an outright WIN in every race I rode. Would I have been a "Special Person" in Ancient Rome? Or an "Invisible Person"? Not that it bloody MATTERS. lol
