Considering he’s played with Ozzy, Bad English and for around 18 years been with Journey, I’d say he’s an excellent drummer. I’ll admit he’s no Neil Peart of Rush, but he’s an excellent drummer from what I see and hear. So come on let’s keep the negative comments to ourselves.

Most don't know that Steve Perry was a singing drummer when he joined Journey. But they already had a drummer and wanted him out front. When he got frustrated they would give him a cowbell to bang on. He also played bass and used one while he was writing all those hit songs. Deen gets to sing and play drums because he has them at a disadvantage.

People like Don Henley, Phil Collins, etc can sing and play drums. This is a whole different world here. He's not only Killen it on drums , he's singing as close to the best vocalist Rock n Roll has ever seen than anyone else. He's not Steve Perry. Nobody will ever be, but Dean is the closest there is. All props to Steve. He was very active on stage but I doubt he could have played drums while singing like he did. Dean is absolutely amazing.

This guy is a good substitute, but no one can even replace Steve Perry. I am so blessed to have seen Journey in the early 80's. Every time time I hear these songs from back then, it brings back the memories from then, especially of my best friend who was a big time Journey fan. 😢 Man I miss those days

I am a drummer and sing a couple songs. I sing harmony on most songs we do and I tell you its tough. I dont sing a tenth of this and am worn to a frazzle. I cannot imagine how he hits the PERFECT note everytime and plays that kit as fabulous as he does. It is an honor just to watch and listen!

I saw Journey recently in J-Ville I'm so glad Deen is back! He is brilliant and to be able to bang away at those drums and sing as amazingly as he does defies any understanding I hope all continues to go well for him and he is able to channel those great energies into his art and stay on the right track! I'm a fan for life just for him!!!! The current issues with the band kinda tainted the experience for us but Deen's exquisite self kinda muffled all the noise of the Journey drama Keep on livin' for the music my man and you'll be safe your fans love you!❤

However, to say or think Deen is the "most talented musician who's ever lived" is a bit of a reach IMO & I'd bet Deen himself would tell you the same. When it comes to the "most talented musician" or one of the greatest musicians who's ever lived who was AKA a genius, look no further than the artist formally known as "PRINCE." Prince played "27" different instruments which is unheard of really. Prince was a musician/singer/songwriter/producer/actor/ film script writer/author/dancer/fashion designer/lighting & stage designer/innovator of his guitar & bass designs & I'm only scratching the surface. Days after Prince passed away & left earth the beneficiaries of his estate found over 1,000 songs just sitting in a vault that Prince wrote & never released. Tell me any other musician ever in music history who's even wrote 100 songs much less had an extra 1,000 songs sitting in a vault he was saving for a rainy day? That's on top of all the songs on albums Prince gave us in music already to enjoy. Prince had shy & a quit nature to him in life, yet he was an anomaly when it came to his music & performing on stage. There's plenty of musicians who are multi talented but there's very few individuals who entirely wrote all the songs on their own, playing every instrument & vocal track on the record, credited as the arranger, composer & producer by themselves. It doesn't matter whether you dig Prince or not, that's fine either way. But you gotta respect an artist who had a gift in that caliber of talent like Prince did, period. Now, to answer your question related to a jazz musician who can sing & play a Journey song as good as Deen. Well, I can't give you one for certain seeing as though jazz music is a whole different monster in music. Even still, they may not sound like Deen or Steve Perry should I say on a Journey song? But if I had to name you a jazz singing drummer I gotta go with "Phil Collins" or "Karen Carpenter." They both may be known as rock/soft rock singer/drummers, but they also both played jazz music too! And even if neither one of them can sound like Perry. They're both great iconic singers/drummers in their own right, no doubt! I was & still am being completely serious about "Prince." Although know that I was only playing around & joking when I double dog dared you being funny to lighten the mood instead of everybody always taking things so serious all the time. \m/(*.*)\m/
