Brushed Brass Finish on Stainless Steel

In this video, we make a piece of stainless steel look like a piece of antique brushed brass. This process can be done on steel and aluminum by using the appropriate patina for the blackening agent.

Although the Post is a couple of years old, the information is still greatly appreciated. I painted professionally for close to thirty years and have done thousands of paint jobs on the various rides and signs at Disneyland in CA. but only a few items which required a brushed finish by private customers, so I was very pleased to see your video and materials. I'm in the process of restoring two 1972 BMW R-75/5 motorcycles to showroom condition which are 500 serial # from each other and both have just over 80K miles , each, and still run as well as they did when I purchased them. So once against j thank you for what my your expertise. The alum. on BMW's engine, trans, and rear drive are left 'natural' by the factory, but I want to make a statement as to how they can be presented when subtlety 'customized' and intend on using a satin clear finish to protect the alum. from oxidizing.

No but a clear coat is recommended to protect any finish added.

Take a look at the Birchwood M38 or the Traditional Darkening patinas. Both are good for darkening up those metals and you can dilute it to change how dark the patina will come out.

You absolutely could, you would need to use a great clear coat like Ever Clear to protect it though. If you just want to do the handles and knobs, it would not be too crazy.

How does the finished product hold up over time? Is it resilient enough to withstand the abuse a buckle might endure?

Normal use like that will see quicker wearing than a display piece or even a door handle. I would highly recommend using the Ever Clear and probably even wax it as needed. Treat it like you would your car finish, when it looks dull, re-wax it.

With the clear co at, how durable is this finish? Would it hold up on - say - light switches or a refrigerator handle?

Depends on the clear coat, you would want something like Ever Clear or Hydro Clear for something like that. It will wear down overtime but you could maintain it with wax if you wanted to ensure the maximum life of the coating.

Yes it would, just make sure you use Ever Clear to seal it in and then wax them once or twice a year to help maintain the look over the years.

Through the use of a different patina yes. Try M24 or M20 by Birchwood to create the black patina portion.

The Patina Stains will work without sanding, just clean it first!

It might work. You would have to sand it to get some of the stainless to show through in order for it to turn out looking brassy. Like we did in the video when we burnished off the Stainless Black patina.

I have a different request, in our neighbourhood brass National Monument plaques are being stolen by brass thieves. We intend to 3D scan an original and then print in SS, or other suitable material, but would like to achieve a maintenance-free dated brass patina. Any suggestions?

The Patina Stain would be just fine. Liver of Sulfur would likely work for the black patina part. Just protect it really well, Ever Clear and Wax is what I would do personally.

You wouldn't want to use the Stainless patinas, but yes. Try using Traditional Antiquing, that will blacken galvanized. Otherwise, follow the same directions, burnish linearly and use the Patina Stains to color as needed.

@@sassypants6005 Depends which clear coat you use, how abusive you are with the surface, and how often it gets used. Kitchen sinks will need more maintenance than guest bedroom sinks. With the right clear coat, maybe wax it a couple times a year to keep up appearance.

The Patina Stain and Ever Clear are both rated for about 400 degrees Fahrenheit. You will have to check how hot your pipes get after a good ride, a laser thermometer would help with that.

I just don’t want to sand over the plates designs . The reason I wan to do this is because the plates of the design are very reflective ( kinda like a mirror ) . I don’t want a reflective championship belt .

I do not think you would achieve quite the same results. You typically need to abrade the surface a little for the Stainless Patinas to take. If you really want to try this, you could mask off the areas you do not want to patina, sand blast it, patina it, then take the mask off.
