It would be great if you made a video on how environmental variables will effect your finish. Shops go crazy trying to get a desired finish not realizing that air humidity, UV light, and other factors play into a finish.

That is a great idea, I will see what we can do.

Great video. How long did you leave black magic on before rinsing? Is 80 grit sandpaper recommended to get the dark shade? I have tried with 150 grit, 3 applications left on for 5 minutes and only achieving a gray finish with some bright metal shining through.
@sculptnouveau6 жыл бұрын
I usually leave it on for about 3-5 minutes. For this one, I believe I was closer to the 3 minute mark. More aggressive sanding will allow a darker patina to develop. For the darkest possible reaction, try sand blasting. If you are still not getting it dark enough, you may like our Black Patina Stain or Black Oil over the top. Remember, when you apply a clear coat it will darken some. If you have more questions, give us a call and we can work it out over the phone.

How durable is the finish? I do full contact medieval fighting and would like to do this to my helm.
@sculptnouveau5 жыл бұрын
It is pretty durable but I would count on doing maintenance in that case. I would seal it with the Metal Oil to make this easy.

Consider if we screw up. We can just sand it and start again? I wouldn't see why not
@sculptnouveau11 ай бұрын
That is correct, just sand it off and try again.

Can you use these products to include the clear coat for a steel fireplace surround?
@sculptnouveau5 жыл бұрын
Yes a clear coat is recommended to go over most of our products, especially the Black Magic on steel. Our Clear Guard and Ever Clear are both rated at about 400°F so those are good choices for a clear coat on a fireplace surround.

If you want a rusty uninformed look that appears more like aged distressed metal do you leave it on and don’t rinse?

You may be happier with Japanese Brown if that is what you are looking for.

Thanks for the video. When you say it more coats gives a denser colour do you mean it becomes a flat black, like a matt paint? I'm looking for a black with a slight cloudy effect, is this the tight product to use?
@sculptnouveau4 жыл бұрын
If you want a flat black, then use a matte clear coat over the top. More coats of the Black Patina Stain just makes it go a darker shade of black. The Black Magic is the right product to blacken steel or iron.

What do you think about using denatured alcohol instead of isopropyl for degreasing and rust removal? We always use denatured after sanding, pre-patina but just wanted to hear your opinion. Thanks!
@sculptnouveau6 жыл бұрын
Denatured Alcohol is completely fine!

Can you tell me how long the first coat of black magic needs to be on there? I’m doing a 4’x10’ panel, x74, and I keep getting spots.
@sculptnouveau3 жыл бұрын
Typically about 3-5 minutes but the warmer it is the closer to the 3 minutes you will want to be. If you are getting spots, it is likely drying and you need to rinse sooner. Give us a call and I would be happy to help answer more questions 760 432 8242

Does this patina create an anti rust to the steel as well?
@sculptnouveau4 жыл бұрын
No, patinas just change the color. If left on its own, it will continue to rust. A clear coat is needed to avoid any rust build up.

Hello, I am building a house in Santa Monica, CA (Southern California). I'm looking for someone local with experience with these projects to help me apply these products to my steel beams. The beams were just sandblasted back to their original form in Mid May, 2023 and ready for someone to help me work with these products over the next few weeks/months of summer, 2023.

What type of steel was used? Cold Rolled or Hot?
@sculptnouveau5 жыл бұрын
Cold rolled was used, though hot rolled would work. Just get the mill scale off first.

Dum question here. You are rincing and capturing water into a bucket, and you are saying that outside you sometimes use a kiddy pool. Why not just water hose the piece and let the water go down the drain ?
@sculptnouveau6 жыл бұрын
Different states have different regulations regarding to this. Check with your state or county for what you can do with the run off. Where we are, we have to collect it and not let it go down the drain.
