I knew it! Imperial Fist is serious black magic. That stuff has made yellow not just realistic, but downright easy to do. This way of doing things is very reminiscent of the old way of easy yellow. Back in the day I was recommended painting the models Ushabti Bone, or Screaming Skull. Even Ionrach Skin was a fun choice and then carefully coat it with something like Cassandora Yellow or Lamenter's Yellow (I still miss that paint). Worked like a charm, but could get finicky on a large surface. Imperial Fist seems to be quite forgiving. You can really just slap it on and it works.

If you wanted to make short cuts, you could prime with Wraith Bone spray, and then zenithal with a white spray (or slap chop white), recess shade Agrax and then glaze with yellow contrast. You’d get the general result a lot quicker but it would have a messier result.

So, my recipe used to be this but using lamenters yellow glaze, but GW don’t make that anymore. However, I can confirm the ratio I used here is an exact match to the tone of lamenters yellow glaze. So, all those people who hoarded bottles of lamenters can rest easy, 3:1 is a perfect replacement

Fantastic video and very helpful for my space marine chapter. Could you use water rather than contrast medium? Thanks
@BrushstrokePaintingGuides
@BrushstrokePaintingGuides Жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching, really glad you found it helpful. With regards using water, no you can’t, you need to thin contrasts with their own medium because of their chemical makeup. Basically, by adding just water you’ll change the mixture of the paint and it won’t hold together correctly anymore. The pigment in the mixture will separate and the paint will no longer behave correctly when applied to a surface. It becomes a blobby mess basically. For small amounts you may be able to get away with it, but for the ratio used in this video I would always recommend using Contrast medium.

This is amazing. Do you think an initial base of wraithbone would get a similar effect? And does it work on larger armour panels lole armigers?
@BrushstrokePaintingGuides
@BrushstrokePaintingGuides Жыл бұрын
Thank you. Wraithbone is quite a bit paler and colder. So, yes it would work but the tone of yellow you’ll get will be different. I’d expect it to me more of a pale lemon tone. Also, the difference between the white highlights against the wraithbone will be more subtle which means they may all but vanish when the yellow contrast is added

I think I need your help at this point. I can't have a base coat as light as yours, by that I mean that my ushubati bone seem too dark, and when I try to thin it the more possible it's just transparent. So yeah, I don't know what you think but I might try to thin it and apply it very thin layer by very thin layer until I got a good basecoat but not too dark? (Sorry for my english I'm french)
@BrushstrokePaintingGuides
@BrushstrokePaintingGuides 8 ай бұрын
Your English is fantastic. Can I ask what colour primer are you painting the ushabti over? If it’s already white, it could be the pot you have is just a bit of a darker tone. One thing you could try is getting a pot of ushabti bone air, it’s the airbrushed version of the “same” colour. They are perfectly fine to handbrush with but tend to be paler in colour. One added bonus, is for this recipe you should be able to use it straight out the pot with no need to thin. If that’s not an option, you could add a touch of white to your pot of ushabti to make it lighter. Not ideal, of course as you want this as an army i presume. Let me know how you get on 👍

@@mrstone768 you really shoudnt need to thin the air paint down any further. Could it be you need to shake and mix the paint more? Often pots can sit for a long time on shop shelves and really need to be shaken well before first use. Another option, if you do need to thin it, please use Lahmian medium and not water. @BrushstrokePaintingGuides I'm just getting into the painting side, but got a Leviathan set so think I'll do a fists based on this paint scheme. Have you tried this technique on larger flat panels on say a dreadnought? Looks like it would remove the whole patches issue with contrast the way you do it
@BrushstrokePaintingGuides
@BrushstrokePaintingGuides Жыл бұрын
@@1974Carnage yes, absolutely. This method works great on larger models too. Because you use standard paints to establish the shade and highlights and just the contrast to stain it yellow. You have much more control over the end result. As you’ve picked up on, the key bit is you apply the contrast as thin layers, means you remove a lot of the problems with it making ugly pooling, watermarks. At first this method seems a lot of work but it saves so much frustration in the long run. For larger vehicles you can fast track the process too, by spray priming the bone basecoat and the. Zenithal spraying with white. You then just need to add some agrax shadows and you’re good to start glazing. It’s actually really quick

@BrushstrokePaintingGuides yeah, bit of initial effort, but seems easier to get a consistent result. Cheers

What a coincidence, i just decided to paint my SM half of Leviathan as imperial fists Edit: How are you finding imperial fist contrast paint? I've had so many bad experiences with Dark Angels contrast paint
@danielmyers7223

The imperial fist contrast paint is great, you can genuinely use it over a white undercoat and still get great results with it.
@BrushstrokePaintingGuides
@BrushstrokePaintingGuides Жыл бұрын
Imperial Fist contrast is for sure one of the better contrast paints. It packs a real punch and goes on cleanly. The only thing I don’t like about it is, how it shades, because it makes orange shadows and personally I do think yellow should have orange shadows. Hence me preferring to to recess shade with agrax. Other than that, it’s brilliant

I understand that contrast paints are really useful, I have a few of my own, but I can't get over the fact that they lack depth. Even with two coats, you can feel that the color is not solid.
@BrushstrokePaintingGuides
@BrushstrokePaintingGuides Жыл бұрын
That’s true, and by their very nature or being a thick wash they never will achieve a solid tones. That’s why it’s important to do that base work beforehand so that they just work as a stain or ink over the top.

A side effect of any wash or contrast paint can be a glossiness, especially if not shaken enough. So, if that is happening to you I would certainly recommend applying a light coat of matte varnish to deaden down that unwanted shine.

It looks nice, but I don't even know how you could have painted it more time consuming. That's not any quick way of painting it. It's surprised me you painted almost everything first before putting the yellow down. It's just really not the way it's done if you're going to paint something fast. And you could get almost exact similar results if you layered the paints properly in a a more efficient quicker manner. But yeah, it looks nice

No problem. Personal taste is what makes painting fun and creative. For a warmer (more orange result) you can swap out the cream base for a pink and that will introduce an orange tone to the result. Thanks for watching 👍

Did you thin the contrast paint with the contrast medium to the ratio mentioned in the video? And you applying it very thinly over the cream basecoat? A darker result would suggest perhaps the base colour is a little too dark. So, could it be you applied the Agrax wash over too much of the model? Or it could be the contrast, like you say is too strong. You can change the result by either lightening the base colour you use or adding more medium to your contrast tint. And remember to only apply the contrast as a glaze, which basically means just wetting the surface of the model, nothing more. Hope that helps Feel free to send some pics to my Instagram if you would like more help 👍

Secondly, I can't believe you read that terribly writting comment I left, I read it just now and nerly died. Lastly, I thought I got the mix of contrast and imp fist right but maybe I didn't?
