I really do love the Catapult platform. At least the non missile varients. The Jester and the K2 both feel really sturdy and despite being small can take quite a punch with decent hit boxes. Personally my favorite build is the Jester with the biggest engine available and 6 medium pulse lasers. It is blazing fast, sturdy, small and absolutely rips stuff apart up close. And the C Bill bonus is great too. Also using 4 ER Small lasers and 2 heavy PPCs is a really fun medium range skirmisher. Those heavy PPCs will even make an Atlas think twice about popping out. Similar heavy PPC build can be done with the K2, just use light machine guns in the ballistic spots, or if you don't want machine guns use 2 medium lasers.

What's the difference in crits on 1x1 ton ammo (10 health) vs 2x0.5 ton ammo (5+5 health) when other components aren't being padded? Is there such a thing as wasted overkill on crits, for example if 6 crit damage hits a 0.5 ton ammo then 1 damage is wasted, as compared to the full 6 damage taken on a 1 ton ammo? If not, I don't understand why you'd use 2x0.5 in each leg when you could use 1x1 and then have enough slots for light ferro for some extra armor.

would also go for light ferro. a crit can hit a specific slot stuffed with equipment, like ammo, heatsink or weapon. sidetorso has 12 slots, is-gauss takes 7 now if nothing else filsl this siedetorso the chance the crits take this gauss are 7 of 7. now fill other stuff and the chance changes to 7 of 8 7 of 9 and so on. even when the stuff filled in has less health, the chance that the important stuff is hit first, gets reduced.

Yep, I understand how crit padding works when there are other crittable components in the same area, but ammo is the only component in the legs, so why not merge those and get save the slots for light ferro?

When critical damage exceeds the remaining health of a component, what happens to the excess damage? Does the remainder spill into another component or does it simply disappear?

You are absolutely right. Light ferro would make more sense. It looks like Baradul just took the old build he had on his Gausspult which is a build pre civil war patch. There was no light ferro pre civil war patch. :) (and no light engines..) There was also no machine gun meta back then. No Pirhanhas... a wonderful time... ^^ Equipment usually got crit out by bigger weapons which dealt higher crit damage if they critted. So you still had half a tonne left if, for example, an AC10 dealt crit damage to your leg. These days it is questionable if this half-tonne-method is still the better option. I mean, all the other components in the leg (hip, upper leg actuator, etc..) are indestructible. They are natural crit pads so to speak. If you load half-tonne wise, this would mean that your critical hit chance is 2/6 (=1/3). A single tonne in a leg reduces crit hit chances to 1/5. Against MGs or LBs that is a lot better of course. Baradul's builds sometimes contain little errors. He has to come up with a build every day eventually. Pretty good question ;) Most people don't think about that stuff. ;) Thx for reading

Correct, the Gauß is a coil gun technically. The other method of magnetic accelleration is the magnetic rail gun, or Railgun for short. But BattleTech does not have Railguns for Mechs, only Dropships and Jumpships.

I’ve caught 2 Gaussapults lone sniping in one of my Ecm lights (pre-Ecm nerf). sneaked up and stood next to them . carefully aimed at the GR then Alpha shot. GR explosion -kill. I lost situational awareness also in mine and suffered the same fate.

I run a Gauss Catapult with less ammo and engine power, but an extra two ER-Medium Lasers. Higher burst damage, but less gauss longevity... I think the trade-off is worth it and it's pretty much my favorite mech.

I think a rail gun forms an electromagnetic charge along a rail to propel a piece of metal at high velocity. I think the gauss rifle forms an electromagnetic "beam" that the piece of metal is pulled through at high velocity. Not that I understand what any of that could mean.

The gauss is another name for a coil gun. Uses either a single or multistage coil to pull the projectile through the barrel. The other is a rail gun, that uses two separate rails to push/pull the projectile at the same time. Couldn't help it, the tech fascinates me.

3LPL is the old meta for the centurion. An LPL dealt 11 dmg back then. It is 10 nowadays. There were no light engines availabe. I don't know what works better but i haven't seen any 3LPL builds on the AL lately. Texan Scrub Lord plays it with 3Snubs. I could see it for a fraction of a second when i logged onto his AL ^^.

Try a heavy goose troll build LL, 3xERML, HG. Doesn't have the range profile of the 2xGauss, but it can administer a large smack down inside 400m. Plus the catapult spreads damage pretty well (besides the arms) so it can play in close better than many heavies.

he has, you can hear the gauss rifle charging, looks like it takes ~0,5-1 seconds. press button shortly before turning around corners, and if no ones there hold it till it uncharges

As Vy core has stated: I charge up the Gauss whenever I anticipate an enemy to be in line of sight soon. This way I am ready to release the Gauss instantly.
