My recruiter in 1978 asked me if I had ever smoked Marijuana and I said yes. He asked me the same question three more times before the light bulb went on and I answered no. That scenario was in the back of my mind my entire career, especially during security clearance interviews. I should've gotten a waiver.

Jason was spot on. Navy Boot Camp was easy. My HS football coach, an ex Marine drill instructor prepared us well. Beat the shit out of us during double-sessions. 6AM till 5PM of pure ass-whooping. 25 players quit the first week. As for BUDs? Yikes! Nope I'm was never made of that material. Not even close. I can't comprehend that level.

In 2001 you got up a few hours early, and trained with the "dive motivators" in basic, a group of SEALs, and iirc an EOD guy. You had to pass the DPFT by your 3rd week of training, or lost your program. Then 'A' school, then for me dive school/Eglin, AFB (EOD). There were about 30 of us, and three passed the DPFT, and kept going to the dive motivators every morning until graduation.

I'm calling BS on his training regimen...6 miles everyday at 8 minute miles if you are blessed with a good running gate is possibly sustainable but it takes a lot of work for a HS kid to get to that level who didn't run track or cross country, but no one is doing 400 pushups/400 dips/400 situps/and certainly not 400 dead hang pullups in the gym three times a week, and it is laughable to even suggest he did...makes me question everything else he says. I ran Cross country in H.S. and started at LCB on a very good varsity football team and was the 3rd fastest player on my team (4.5 40) and grew up on the salt water in Cocoa Beach, so i was a decent surfer and also swam like a fish. I made it to Recon in The Corps and was blowing away the max PFT scores with a max pullup count of 32 (20 being max score), 121 (100 being max score) sit-ups in under 2 minutes and a best 3 mile time of 15:21 (17:59 being max score). When I left The Corps I was a competitive Triathlete and made several podiums in Pepsi Sprint Triathlon series in the 80's. For me to do 400 correct pullups at my peak along with everything else he spews out would probably take me ten hours...he's completely full of shit!

I was in the Army and obviously never experienced Navy Seal training but in one way or another we were all challenged physically/mentally and what got me through was thinking in general there is a set ending date to this training which even in Basic training you would sing cadences saying 4 more weeks until we are through and so on. I always wondered how the Vietnam Pow's stayed motivated to live dealing with some form of torture on a daily case not knowing or seeing an end in sight.Bottom line knowing when there is an end date in sight helps you fight whatever comes your way

Thats interesting, there's an aspect of that mentality that reminds me of addiction, I know that quiting recovery isn't an option, and if it was a choice I struggled with I would lose. When he said he played the tape forward on what quitting would look like he saw unmanageability, a choice that he knew he couldn't make.... and again if any doubt creeps in there it can threaten the entire psych. That binary choice to hang in there

@@carty200 Any competant trainer would tell you that no world class athlete can do this even one day per week. That's like saying that to be a Navy seal you need to sprint 100 m in 5 seconds. I've trained with national level rowers in Canada and they would do 12 sets of back muscles twice a week and at the fitness test of the team the best guy was able to do 25 pull ups as his very max but nowhere near 20 sets of 20 reps.

@@comptegoogle511 navy seals need significant back muscle not only for carrying around 100 pounds of equipment while scaling the sides of ships, but also if one of the sailors has a combat injury and needs to be hauled over 5 miles of tough terrain.
