I remember our valedictorian at high school in 1970 who achieved full colours for academics in the 10th grade already, and in the final year ended with 8 distinctions when one need only do 6 subjects. She went on to university and committed suicide after two months on campus. To this day, no one could fathom the reason why. Maybe this young man had the answer she was looking for.

@Superslav26 Wrong, there are a lot of elements involved besides thinking differently. I don't know inherited wealth for example a lot of rich people in general have inherited wealth. Place of birth, if your parents were smart opportunity etc etc etc all attribute to your success, the only thing I find there is a reason why people succeed is ability to take advantage of opportunities given to you. Everyone thinks differently that's why there are so many different professionals in the world. You can be a math genius but be a failure when it comes to poetry or changing your tires.

He's absolutely correct. I graduated from college with a 4.0 GPA, and with all the accolades you could possibly receive. Yet at the end of it, I felt tremendously empty. The struggle is real for overachievers. I sacrificed so many relationships and life experiences to get there. I ended up completely changing the direction I intended as my future career, and instead focused on family and personal growth . I ended up getting married just three years later and having four wonderful children over a ten year span. I decided to always prioritize my family (which a lot of my extended family thought was completely nuts) and not run the rat race for $$ and prestige. I ultimately became a freelance writer and a missionary. I have never looked back, although my parents have always subtly reminded me that I am a disappointment.

Do you what is best for you. I am an excellent student too but just earlier in my carrer I realized that this is not what I want. Although earning not as much as others, I am happy and enjoying simple things in life. Carreer and scholastical achivements are great for our Ego but not for our soul. And wisdom is not taught in schools,it's a lesson from experiences the life itself has given you and made you . It's more personal and much more humane and from that it makes you the best person you could ever be. Now, I have two teens I told them just choose whatever they like to achieve and just be happy.

But what about the children, teenagers that sacrifice their time to make friends who are clueless about society, have no idea how to interact with others just because for the better grades in hopes that they can get scholarship. Only to realise in later life that their time sacrificed during those days never mattered. Only to realise that the scholarship could be achieved even if they hadn't sacrificed their social life, just through the general steady progression and a bit of time investment near the end. Only to realise that the sacrifice he made was rather weighing him down. Worse when you don't get scholarship, you have no social life, no idea how to deal with society, awkward nerd sitting lonely. That's why, just because everyone learn in later life doesn't mean you have to keep it hidden. Isn't it better to break the cycle so that people are aware and the general life can be better?

The poor are selfish? really? you've misused the word selfish and associated it with the word "poor" when the word selfish is arguably defined to all humans. Selfishness is part of human nature. Never in a million years could I achieve a tenth of what this guy has, but I can somewhat relate because I was someone who was expected to do very well by my family. After about a year and a half of community college with no goal whatsoever in mind, I decided to stop lying to myself and just stopped going, and instead pursued my dream of playing in a band. What followed was the greatest 7 years of my life. What was a huge disappointment to my family was the greatest thing that has ever happened to me. Those days are over now and I’m back to a meaningless, depressing existence. For any young people watching this video, don’t let ANYONE decide your future for you. Do what your gut is telling you, regardless of anyone else’s opinion. Whatever social or financial status you gain from pursuing the career you’re “supposed” to pursue will never, and I mean NEVER fill the gaping void of regret left by giving up on your dreams. @@liseernie agreed, I didn't realize that Jesus Christ was my true hero and the role model I needed in my life until I was 30... and I grew up in the Church... it actually wasn't until I went back to school 2 years ago at 30 and took a History class in college that I realized that I needed to look to Christ and model my life after him... in my studies I learned that even the Roman Government couldn't find dirt on him to spread, and fabricating dirt on him was so unbelievable because he was that perfect... when I realized this in a History class, I realized just how perfect Jesus was and how I needed to look to him as a role model rather than some sports athlete or public figure... this young man figured this out in Highschool and because of that he will avoid a lot of self-inflicted pain that I didn't avoid, and his inspired millions.. it's no coincidence that so many God-fearing people with strong relationships with Christ accomplish spectacular feats and declare their love of Christ.

I wasn’t a Valedictorian, my TWO older brothers WERE. I always saw them as an example. I studied harder to get into medical school, later to get into residency after 17 years of studying and not having life… I feel empty inside, no friends, no boyfriend or family of mine, no hobbies… This year is a new beginning for me. I learned this in my 30s and I am changing my job into another medical field. My focus was always to be the best (my mother’s words) Now I change my mind. I don’t care what my family will think. My new life is just beginning now.

Still 30? You’ve accomplished so much, but remember to stay humble and don’t compare your accomplishments with people you meet because it will set a burden on your relationships. I find it hard for myself being a workaholic and not having any input from outside work when entering conversations. I feel so lame 😂. It’s so hard to burst that bubble as you get older. Anxiety kicks in because there are instructions to follow, I knew how to do this back in the day before work, but now I feel like I’m outside looking in. I feel clueless 😂 🤦♂️

That's cool. As someone living in a religious country, everyone was basically Christian and kids grew up to be one. Not that we were forced but it's so tightly ingrained to our culture that you're almost missing out on everything if you weren't in that religion. I grew up to be a curious kid and naturally had a lot of questions in life, and the answers of the adults just saying "Leave it up to God" (I can't translate the phrase properly but I can assure it doesn't sound as irresponsible as that) didn't really satisfy me. So eventually I became atheist, but currently in hiding, which is sad because people don't take it too well here.
@panda42473 жыл бұрын
Just a thought: I liked the overall message of the speech, but since he included that part, I can't share it with my friends. Also, isn't it kind of hypocritical to say "don't aim for money, career, etc at the expense of relationships" only to includethe religious part as the goal instead?
