Fun Fact: Combiners have a separate personality from their individual components. For example, when the combaticons combine into Bruticus, none of the individual combaticons are in control. Also, a combiner's individual components do not get to decide when to separate. For example, Bruticus, will only separate if he wants to separate. Onslaught, Swindle, and the others have no say in it.

Depends on the continuity. In the original lore the personalities of the bots combining affected how cognitive the Combiner was. It's why Predaking and, to a lesser extent, Defensor were the only truly intelligent combiners while the others were often raging lunatics. Though to be fair the Bruticus SHOULD have been a competent one since the combaticons did all defer to Onslaught unlike the Stunticons where Motormaster was hated and/or feared by the others.

In a Japanese exclusive episode of G1 that is supposed to be a bridge of sorts between the cartoon and the movie (mainly to introduce some of the new Autobot characters), a specific scene shows Menasor detaching Wildrider and having him attach to Superion’s leg to cripple the Aerialbots after Fireflight gets confused and attempts to connect as the wrong limb, crashing into his team-mates and falling off. The episode name is “Scramble City: Mobilization.” This shows that the combiners can switch limbs with other teams.
