In hindsight 10 years later it's incredible to see how close WWE was to having a legitimate business-changing story in the Summer of Punk. All they had to do was make Punk's walk out last a few months, let him go around the country promoting himself as the real WWE Champion (much like he did at Comic Con then), constantly tease on social media what he would do with the title, and culminate it with the big money Title vs. Title rematch with Cena at Rumble (or if they were even more ambitious, Mania). Instead, he comes back after one measly little Raw off, Haitch and Nash tear the angle down to meaningless pieces, and further fueled Punk's exit from the business. Oh, they also followed that up with the abysmally awful locker room "walk out" that buried pretty much every babyface in the company dead. It went from "things are looking up!" to LOLWWE so fast. Ten years later and we're still feeling the aftershocks. Whew.

So stop trying to fight against it. It's over. Wrestling doesn't exist anymore wrestling is dead today. Fact. A bunch of nobody's. AEW is nothing either. More Jobbers everywhere. It's trash. They suck. It's not booking anymore. It's because the wrestlers stinks. So. Horrible. Punk was always garbage too. Fact. He did nothing. Daniel Bryan was garbage. All he did was kick kick kick kick kick punch punch punch kick kick kick kick kick kick kick kick kick kick kick kick kick kick. Fact. Terrible garbage. He didn't do anything. So stop it. Bryan in 2021: I am looking at the newsletter. They are so smarky. And their paragraphs take so long to read. All we see of old newsletters are their star ratings. It’s February 2001 and I am in awe. His name is Dave Meltzer. He is a journalist like me. I am 40 years old. We were introduced by a good friend of mine from the business, Paul Heyman. It is November 2019. Dave Meltzer is in a Twitter war with Seth Rollins. They say his sources were the cause. That night, Dave and I make the newsletter for the first time. A month from now the Monday Night wars are over. I cross the room to the TV. I find Granny. [TV Noises] When I get to the TV, Vince and Shane are on. I am terrified. It is January 2001, when I’m introduced to Dave. he buys me a newsletter subscription, the first time a mark has done this for me. As she passes me the Star ratings filled, NJPW loving newsletter, our fingers accidentally touch. I feel fear for the last time. A token funeral is held for WCW. There is a lot for Vince to bury. Dave frames the newsletter. It’s the only newsletter anyone remembers. An Invasion storyline is hinted . A few days later, a partially over Booker T can be seen on Raw to no Heat. They call us us dirt sheets. They explain the name has been chosen for the ominous associations it will raise in Wrestling fan's enemies. They are pissing me off to the point of me shaping myself into something gaudy, something lethal. In January 2013, Vince asks me to watch one more hour of Raw. something that his ass would've never asked. A week later, the show gets worse than it already was. R.D Reynolds, a wrestling journalist, helps me write a book. In it, we call WCW all types of names. I am not sure if I can ever watch it again. It is Christmas, 2015. Vinny tells me he is afraid, and worried. He says Raw is so un watchableable now. I tell him it is, but this is where our money comes from and it can't get any worse. As I lie to him, it is September 2018. I am in a room full of people ripping on Raw. A very old woman looks at me and smiles. She’s forgetful. After each long review, she pronounces names wrong- like a signature. Vinny accuses me of watching bad Raws and Smackdowns. He bursts into angry tears, asking if it’s because I think it's gonna get better. It’s true. I still believe it will. I prefer the stillness here. I am tired of WWE. This Vince. I’m tired of being caught in the tangle of their scripted angles. They claim their company is entertainment, yet their entertainment is populated with bad booking. Perhaps the WWE is not entertainment. Perhaps old wrestling is entertainment. A WWE without a 74-year-old man. It’s too late. Always has been, always will be, too late.
