Bryan Sutton performs "The Train That Carried My Girl From Town" at the first-ever Fretboard Summit on November 7, 2015. Though he performed the bulk of his set on his Bourgeois signature edition guitar, he also brought out this 1942 Martin 0-17 for a couple of tunes. The Martin was purchased by Sutton's grandfather in San Francisco while he was stationed in the Navy.
The Fretboard Summit is an annual gathering of guitar enthusiasts curated by the Fretboard Journal magazine. The next Summit takes place October 14-16, 2016 at the Rancho Bernardo Inn in San Diego, California.

On the subject of that guitar: It's a revered instrument now and worth a fortune, but back in 1942 how expensive were they? Presumably they were still very costly because they were a hand crafted instrument of fine materials. Assuming folks back in the 40s didn't have a disposable income similar to many people today, surely they weren't an impulse buy? They must have really saved up. Anyone got any light to shed?

That guitar is not that revered and definitely not worth a fortune in the grand scheme of vinnidge Martin guitars. Just like now, back then if you wanted a good guitar, you found a way to get it.

Layaway financing. Remember back then this was basically your only form of entertainment besides a radio. Every fair had a music competition.
