A Bryce 7.1 Pro video aimed at people who are well versed in Bryce and wish to expand their skills. As an advanced topic, the focus is on getting the effect rather than discussing the various controls in Bryce.
The idea was to make a lens system to recreate a fractal flame effect. Don't be deceived by the shortness of the video, it is quite a trick to set this effect up.
Better viewed in HD - some of the controls in Bryce are quite fiddly and small.

Hello David. I am finally able to post comments to videos directly within KZbin. With my admittedly horrible search skills, you can imagine why it took me so long to learn what to do. LOL This is a great little tutorial showing the ease of making a fractal style render. I have a project I am planning that something like this will be quite useful for, and wouldn't you know, I find this video at just the right time? That is awesome! Thanks for this!

@@davidbrinnen wow thanks David, wasn’t expecting a response on such a dated video. I’m finishing up the spooky fog scene now. Wonderful tutorials :-) thank you

@@AlwaysOnline2001 Good good, Bryce is a great creative tool, it is not, of course, without limitations, but part of the fun of using the software I have always thought, is working out ways of getting around those limitations to create the image you want. While it may not give you exactly what you want, the process often rewards the imaginative pursuit of a scene with happy accidents and interesting artistic insights. Even when things go wrong, particularly when things go wrong, that is when I have learned the most.

can you do a tutorial on making fractal river systems in bryce? i see it as a possible erosion style filter? a bit like world machine?

Unfortunately at present I'm wrapped up in other projects, if however DAZ 3D show any interest in updating their software and they require my input I will be certain to raise this very topic and quite a few others besides!

Hi David. I like all your tutorials. Can you recommend a tutorial that shows how to make my own materials?
@davidbrinnen

+Tim Moyers, tricky, I suppose that depends on your level of experience with Bryce, the key to good materials in Bryce is often dependent on procedural textures. Which is a part of making materials. But for the beginner it is better perhaps to use preset procedural textures and concentrate on the overall settings. So, if you can narrow it down a bit, what kind of material are you wanting to make first? Just to get the ball rolling.

+David Brinnen Any relatively simple material just to get started. I've photographed lots of nature-textures. I know how to make them seamless such as a picture of pebbled soils. Tree barks, etc. but making a bump map of them is a complete mystery.

+Tim Moyers, Ah... well if you are working with image based textures then you have a different challenge. To generate bump maps for your images I suggest you try out CrazyBump which is what I use for this task, though other programs that do something similar are available and probably cheaper, at the time I got CrazyBump I needed a quick solution to this problem. The drawback, from a technical point, is that the bump channel that can be generated with procedrual textures is 16bit Bryce can only deal with 8bit bump maps for images which means that the result can be a bit "steppy" if the bump is set to high. If you use the little gold man on the create shelf, it will start you on the path to applying an image texture to a 2D surface.

+David Brinnen I found a freeware (open source program) alternative to crazybump. It may have a learning curve. It can be downloaded here if anyone else is interested. alternativeto.net/software/awesomebump/

+Tim Moyers Cool, thanks for adding the link, I know a lot of hobbyists are doing this on a budget so it is great that you managed to find an alternative. OK so long as it spits out something you can feed into the bump channel you should have something to experiment with. You can test your heightmaps in the terrain editor also, which will give you a guide if you have some idea what the geometry in your photograph would look like.
