Zaleski was one of my training backpack hikes in the Boy Scouts for the Philmont camp in northern New Mexico in the mid-1980's. I remember it as being quickly grueling (twisted my ankle a hundred yards from the trail head) but nothing to compare with 70 miles in the lower Rockies. Brings back good old memories, thanks for this.

Hello Bryce, it's good to see you out on the trail once again. I agree with you about the Starbucks instant coffee, I always have to doctor it up with a little hot chocolate mix. That little creature on the tree looked like a mini flying squirrel. You do a very fine job of editing, I appreciate your effort. Two thumbs up. I hope that you did not come down with a bad case of poison ivy. 🤗

I started my backpacking adventures at Zaleski, lots of good memories there (although I'm not really itching to go back haha). I've never backpacked before, we live about a half hour from Lake Hope. My wife and I took a hike there last week, I think it was the poison ivy trail, wound our way back to the parking lot were you were parked, took an hour or so. We met 2 backpackers on the way out, it was very interesting. I'm going to try to backpack there in June, for my first time, maybe my grandkids will go with me, either way I hope to give it a try. Thanks for a very interesting video, I followed along with you on my map whilst laying in bed.

MSR has a little coffee filter, Coffee Mate maybe? I have one and use it with real coffee I bring in a bag. I have a cheap cook set with the handles on bigger bottom and smaller top. I can boil water and pour it through filter into the smaller top as a cup. Let the filter sit in it and move it around while it cools to get the most flavor. The remaining water in the big cup can pour into a mountain house breakfast. Also put cowboy coffee into you tube I’ve seen people show how to make it that way. Boil water with coffee in it then pour a small amount of cold water in it. It’ll make the grinds stay at the bottom and you can pour the coffee into a cup to drink grind free , I believe but haven’t tried it yet. Also try powdered milk instead of those little creamers. I mix mine with Truvia because I’m on a diet, no sugar. Cool video glad your mission was a success

Shawnee has some closures due to logging to improve the forest. Its closed from camp 1 to camp 2, and from camp 7 to the ranger station near the parking lot. They have posted detours. I detoured from 1 to 3 via a bridle trail, hiked directly 4. Camped at 4 then did road walks from the midpoint between 4 and 5, all the way back to the end. Made a long overnighter, and the road walks still had wonderful views.

Wildcat hollow is great as well, I actually saw a wild cat last time I was there. I started w the Starbucks via w the creamers and was always bad. Started buying G7 3 in 1 Vietnamese instant coffee packs off amazon. They are pretty great, a bit of a nutty flavor but really good. They also have G7 strong and they are good as well if you like a stronger brew.

Just wanted to say man, thanks for all the tips in this video! This was the inspiration for my first ever solo backpacking trip I took a couple weeks ago. Went to Zaleski and stayed at Camp #3. Was definitely a different experience than camping/backpacking with a group or with the fam. Wasn't too hot, did get a little creepy at night... I have to say, my saving grace was my little bluetooth speaker, got a little fire going that turned into a big ass fire, then the whiskey and then I started jamming to some metal out in the woods... freaking awesome, didn't see another human being for 24 hours!! Can't wait to do it again, I'm thinking about Mohican next time. Thanks again bro... keep up the great videos!

Yuengling for the win. PS, for poison ivy contact...keep 1 or 2 cotton bandanas on you. Any brand or whatever will do, but I find the cheaper ones work even better because they are more abrasive. Find a stream and soak the bandana, rub the areas where you may have the oils on you, rinse the bandana and wring it out a bunch of times, repeat maybe a couple times depending how much contact you had with it. I luckily do not get poison ivy, but I still would rather not have the oil everywhere.

So do you use the Permethrin on your clothes for ticks? I just hiked Zeleski South Loop the other day. Very hot and very humid at night. I used the pesticide on my clothes, my partner did not. She ended up having to pull a tick out of her leg. I had a bunch of chigger bites, but I feel those are common and kind of unavoidable during the summer.. Also, I know you mentioned using the alcohol/hand sanitizer solution on your legs for the poison ivy, does the alcohol also get bugs like chiggers and ticks to jump off of you? Sorry if it’s a dumb question, just kind of new to backpacking. Thanks for the video, I subscribed!

G'day Bryce... love your channel by the way.... so, Starbucks isn't coffee... just saying. Do yourself a favour and grab a GSI java filter with some REAL coffee grinds and a filter paper. The filter paper slows the drip down and makes a great trail coffee. Just squish the coffee grinds in the paper under your boot once the REAL coffee has filtered and chuck it on the fire or pack it out... REAL coffee is worth the weight, especially on an overnighter. So, I'm with you on poison ivy and I'm always dodging it at zaleski. Grows as big as rhubarb there. One thing I've always done if I think I've touched poison ivy is rub dirt on it, lol. Seriously. I watched a vid about it, they said usiliol sticks similarly to motor grease and they found regardless of type of soap used, using a clothe or not made all the difference. Because its abrasive, relatively. So I rub dirt on it. I'll also rub some dirt on the outside of my legs if it looks like I'm probably gonna end up touching it. Haven't got it yet and I know I should've a few times. I feel for you bro, hope you didnt get it.
