"You were trying to figure out what happened and why -- you cannot play golf like that." Brilliant lesson. Everyone should remember that. It would be counterproductive and worsen your score during a round. It also implies that you or one could figure out everything and NEVER misfire or hit a bad shot again. It's not possible and perverse to think it is. Pros hit bad shots and don't do mental gymnastics every time they do. They go right back to the basics, and what they've been doing well most of the time. Glad you put this out Jerome!

The hidden challenge of playing up is that your target off the tee gets much smaller, rather than larger. When you’re in range to drive the green or close the target line gets more narrow as compared to when you’re hitting a drive to a 30-40 yard wide fairway. Yes, you’re closer after that tee shot from the reds, but if you didn’t hit the right line then you have a difficult to control chip from the rough or a bunker rather than a straightforward full swing shot from the rough.

When you encounter people who are in their 60s who drive it 40m less, playing low lofted irons, scoring near par and me shooting 80-84 with 3 putts, chipping tp 3-5 feet but missing those putts. Driving into trouble and having to make 1 putts for bogey or 2 putts for double... you start re-evaluating what's more important. I'm at the stage where, it's all about putting. A world figure skating coach confided to me that her most successful athletes were ‘dumb’ in that they didn’t think too much, whereas the smart athletes were always overthinking and never achieved the success that might have been expected. This why top athletes can rarely explain how they do it, whereas coaches are failed competitors and can explain the details of there sport.
@JeromeRufin25 күн бұрын
Yeah I can see that. I’m just trying to get to state I was when I played highly competitive basketball
@bertpainter838519 күн бұрын
@@JeromeRufin Did you think or just react? Basketball is a game where if you think about what you do, you will usually be a split second late. The golf swing can be like that. Practice the drills over and over without thinking about results or other parts of the swing. Eventually, it's muscle memory. Then when you get to the course you just play. If you practiced enough, which I'm betting you do, the swing is without thought. I just watched a coach say the opposite of most. He said the golf swing is like a baseball swing except baseball swing is level and golf is more downward. He said if you're a good/great hitter in baseball, the butt of the bat leads the swing and the barrel catches up causing that whip/snap. Golf swing is the same. The handle should lead and then the club whips/snaps after the ball hitting the ground. I ignored all my thoughts after watching and before hitting the golf ball, I'd practiced how I used to hit the long ball in baseball and then got over the ball and used that thought to hit the golf ball. It's working. I'm 20 yards further and if I snap the clubhead fully extended after contact the ball goes straight. but if I don't it slices or fades. But the swing when I think hitting the long ball in baseball feels awesome.

I think what you are seeing here in Jerome's journey to be a scratch golfer, is how difficult it is to take up this game when you are an adult! Kid's accept the fact that they will hit bad shots and they also know they will hit a lot of good shots along the way. Hence, they don't get hung up on trying to be perfect. It's just a game to them. Hit the ball, find it and hit it again until it gets in the hole. Unfortunately, as an adult, we want to learn how to hit perfect shots because we think that will help us shoot a great score. Hitting the ball well doesn't mean you will shoot a good score, anymore than not hitting the ball perfect means you won't shoot a good score! A player needs to learn how to shoot a good score and once you figure that out the game comes to you and becomes a ton of fun. Teachers like Dana can help you refine your swing, but it's up to the player to figure out how to shoot a good score. Full disclosure, I've taken lessons from Dana and he's a great teacher because he gives you the tools to succeed all the while trying to get you to play like an athlete and not a robot trying to make perfect swings.
