Bryson Keenan is a master of gojuryu karate. He was an Australian serviceman, then worked in executive security around the world.
Although he has a very particular set of skills, skills he has acquired over a very long career, he is now studying Zen, and finding a more peaceful life.
During one of his visits to Okinawa to train with Taira Masaji we asked if he could stop by the Asato Dojo in Naha City so that we could have a quick chat.

Sensei: Masters of Okinawan Karate is a crowd-funded documentary series about the amazing martial arts teachers living on Okinawa, the birthplace of karate. It is completely free to watch on KZbin. Learn more about the project here and how you can help here:
travel67.com/t...
GOALS OF THE SERIES
1. Document the stories of Okinawan karate masters and their philosophy on life and their martial arts practice.
2. Record in the highest quality possible. Ideally 4K or 8K, RAW, multi camera, multi audio
3. Store the original data as an archival record.
4. Transcribe and translate the recordings to spread knowledge of Okinawan martial arts, history and culture.
5. Make the videos available for free online via KZbin, and on Bujin.tv so that anyone, anywhere can see them.
The documentary series grew out of the Karate Masters Portrait Project which began in 2012. The portrait project allowed amazing access to the sensei, but it was only Chris Willson and James Pankiewicz who got to hear their stories. The documentary series is a way for us to share that unique knowledge with the international karate community.

"we are not the author of our own thoughts" This is a very scary statement... As the saying goes "If you don't know yourself, then who does" One's desires manifest first in thought and then become actions, over time repeated actions becomes one's character. We are all the authors of our own character no matter our thoughts.

My question is how these types of students and sensei still have teeth with all these soldiers training and hard Karate training...My 2 Sensei do not have teeth due to punches...Shotokan ryu that some how was "more" sporty than these other styles. I had fissure ribbons in practice days and somehow full contact Karate guys do not have it most of the times so I do not know.

Yes Sir, a beautiful career from trainee via coach and now to a Zen practitioner. A fulfilment of grand masters, whom many of them were monks or priest, to my humble knowledge. I think lots of multilevel trainings are structured very similarly like language aptitude test , i.e. starting from solving the obvious (for beginners), via facing options to be chosen and dealt with (intermediate) through whati-ifs, as you mentioned (for advanced) involving hypothetical solutions or sevaral equallly good solutions or doing nothing at all. Paul, 67, retired instructor of Goju ryu *Karate and techer of technical English.

I have fond memories of being a skinny, snotty, cocky teenager training under Bryson in the late 80's. Good times and a fabulous instructor.
