Honestly when I first learned about buried alive and white hand, the scariest part to me was the “GAME OVER.” Not even the accompanying sprite of red being dragged underground (although I guess it’s probably the combination of the two that does it, really). A game over is just so out of character for any Pokémon game and that made it so ominous and terrifying. NOT that it still freaks me out or anything *sweats a little bit*

Amazing video! Edit: I forgot to mention that the GameBoy even has the power to go into the future to use files. Wow man Nintendo sure was innovative!

To think that I was actually obsessed with these kinds of Creepypastas when I was younger. Hearing these stories again is like a trip down memory lane. I seem to recall there was a version of the Ghost Animation story that also had something about Pokemon 731, where, if you were to, in a Japanese version of Red/Green, go to Route 7 and spin around on the 31st grass tile, you'd have a chance of encountering 731, which was a Pokemon whose "sprite" was alternating pictures involving the secret Japanese unit in WWII known as 731. Supposedly attempting to capture it would mess up the game's opening in some way, kind of like how losing to Buried Alive would have. Again, really funny looking back and remembering how into these kinds of stories I was back in the day.

Besides the idea of the gameboy being capable of reading GIFs and flash files at all being laughable, I to this day find it funny that the creepypasta asserted that the Gen1 Pokemon games shipped using SWFs to store sprite animations a full 3 months before the first piece of software that could export the format was released.

I really can't believe there are people who question the legitimacy of the Buried Alive and White Hand as having potentially been real but "maybe Game Freak thought it was too scary and removed it". How low IQ do you have to be to think GF would intentionally add in something that would literally end your run in the middle of the Badge Quest? Why would they market the game as having 8 Gym Leaders and an Elite 4 if you only fight like 5 of the Leaders and then get munched up by a zombie before the game is even finished? I unironically enjoy White Hand and Buried Alive as a Creepypasta concept but not one that should be taken as plausible.

I'm far more scared of the time traveling gameboy cart that could save 60 frames of animation for a single enemy, large sprites, AND has embedded .swf files (you know, a format that was brand new only released after pokemon and didn't get much use until much later for web animations), fuck haunted or not that would have been a technological breakthrough worth dealing with a curse or two.

God this brings me back to writing my own creepypasta for a video game creepypasta reading/review channel here on KZbin. Despite following all of the channel’s own writing attempts and asking both friends and strangers to review it, the channel and comments tore me apart. It was at that point that I realized the entire premise of the show was to get young writers to submit their stories to the show just to tear them down and make fun of them. The main face of the channel also would always try to guilt trip his viewers out of skipping ads cause he wanted to be able to narrate and “critique” video game creepypastas for a living. I’m p sure the channel is making different content by now, but who knows, maybe they’re still discouraging young writers to this day.

Still, I can say this is actually still one of my favorite "haunted video game" creepypastas simply because it's not told in story form. Instead, it's a cold, professional description of the monsters in the same way as a fan wiki would describe them. It's done in a matter-of-fact kind of way, as if it was already a well-known fun fact about the games. Not to mention, they appear to be unused content, so besides the inaccurate file extensions, any errors (missing frames, the game crashing if you beat Buried Alive), could be explained by those bits not being programmed in yet.

Why are Pokemon Creepypastas always a notch above the creepypastas of other franchises? I mean, it always seems like they always have at least some ground in the games themselves or reality.
@GuranPurin3 жыл бұрын
Because there's some actual creepy lore in Pokemon, notably with Lavender Tower (though I feel it's overdone and there's plenty more material a lot of people overlook from other Generations) and the fact that ghosts exist and Pokemon can die. It stands to reason that something creepy could actually exist conceptually. Other franchises like Mario and Sonic are arguably straightforward in being very bright and colorful with storylines that can be dark but not really creepy. So when people go out of their way to make Sonic have red hyperrealistic bloody eyes, it just feels forced because there's no canon material they're taking it from. It's literally just "yo wouldn't it be funny if Sonic killed all his friends hahahahaha".
@supernovel75143 жыл бұрын
@@GuranPurin Yeah, I guess that makes sense, although River Twygz needs some more creepypastas of it's own

Pokemon was one of the most popular series ever and so when the creepypasta trend was emerging, you naturally had some talented people who knew how to work with already existing material for the games. Like the horror films industry there are only so many tricks you can pull before everything gets stale, unfortunately. So many other pastas copied the Pokémon one because they were the first ones that were very popular.
@inendlesspain47243 жыл бұрын
@@GuranPurin That's probably why other creepypastas like Ben Drowned were so good (at least for video game creepypasta standards), since that game is already creepy on its own right and the author just had to re-arrange the its elements to make a creepy original story out of it.
