I think they should bring back the "disembodied voice casts a lightning spell" in future games. Not necessarily future Zelda games, just future games in general.
@anglebrackets34303 ай бұрын
Yeah! Just throw it in with no explanation, ideally in a game that previously had no voice lines. Like "hey, is this thing on? yeah? ok good, i got lightning coming your way in like 3 seconds" and then the screen gets cleared.

I am imagining the old man from the start of the game is just stalking Link- sorry, Bimmi all across Hyrule, commenting on everything he does, while the mute hero is desperately trying to get away from him.

this feels like if Zelda 1 had been a Master System or Genesis game that got an "enhanced" Sega CD port

So my understanding is, this was a data stream piggybacked on a satellite TV broadcast. You'd plug your Super Famicom into the dish with this device, and download a small game. Hence the loading screen which is crude streaming video while the game slowly downloads. The SFC had the ability for cartridges and expansion devices to add their own sound channels alongside the console's. So while the game runs, the TV broadcast is still sending music and narration mixed into the game sound. Of course that's a prerecorded stream that can't react to the game, so it's all stuff that doesn't relate to whatever you're doing. The data stream continues sending commands to the game like "pause for dialogue", " advance the timer", and "power up the sword". As with all satellite broadcasts though, you can't send anything back. For these games, they tried to make it sort of an interactive TV show, so the game stops at the end of the broadcast. There might have been other games that you could just keep saved? But they'd lack the enhanced audio and command stream. It's absolutely wild that this not only existed, but was preserved even without Nintendo's help, given the highly volatile nature of it all. I don't know if simply recording the broadcast with a VCR captured the data stream? The games did save to the BS-X memory, but I believe it was powered by an internal battery like most games then, so it's nearly impossible to find one that still saves, let alone still has those broadcasts saved.

Nintendo: Insists on very little voiced dialogue in the Legend of Zelda, up until Breath of the Wild. Also Nintendo, in Japan, way back when the Super Famicom was a thing: Listen until the characters are done narrating! Bonus: Nintendo about The Legend of Zelda: Insists only the Green Elf can ever be the main playable character in the franchise. Also Nintendo when BS Zelda: Yeah, boy or girl, pick whoever you want.

Hell yes! Third quest time? I had no idea a full narration translation had been done now, first discocered it pre-2010 at high school when the projects were in early stages. Already was a wildly different experience but the fact that additional change has been ported over now, is VERY impressive. And yes, because the soundtrack for each week was broadcast parallel with the narration, the music won't change per area - this is not the case in the other hacks which don't feature the narration. A full OST of BS Zelda no Densetsu was released around the same time in Japan that features the music as it plays per the broadcast schedule.

This is probably one of the most obscure Zelda games. The only other game like this I can think of is that Japan exclusive point and click adventure game for the DS starring Tingle called “Ripened: Tingle’s Balloon Trip of Love” Hands down the most unhinged Zelda game.

I've played a partially restored romhack of this before, but it didn't have any of the FMV scenes or voiced audio, just the gameplay and time limit stuff. I thought it was pretty cool but wow I didn't think there was so much more to the actual experience of the original BS game I was still missing out on... Interesting how this is actually the first instance of a modern over-tutorialized Zelda game with the audio stuff restored. It's like having a Navi/Fi-like character with you except you don't get any prompts and they're just in your ear the whole time telling you what to do.
@randomnpc4453 ай бұрын
Conversely, though, unlike Navi and Fi you seem to be able to just ignore it and keep playing while the dude talks in most cases, instead of stopping you to mash through a textbox while they tell you something you already know.

Wow, this is just *wild.* I'd known about the Link to the Past one and even tried playing it once many years ago, it was not an ideal experience but maybe that's changed in the last 10 years. I suppose when I saw ROMs that mentioned BS Legend of Zelda, I was just assuming they meant the other one and not this one. That's really neat, seeing what is essentially an unheard of official Zelda game. The other hand had some Japanese voice over, which is what I thought we were hearing here at first, but no, it's actual English! This is going to be a cool ride to see how it goes. It *looks* really good as a recreation of the original overworld but with SNES graphics.

Ah, so you are indeed doing the Satellaview game now. Interesting. Death count: 1 [70] (1 today) (0:08) Oof, did this game footage touch Fuzzy and get dizzy? :P (1:14) Hey there, voiced dialogue. How's it going? (1:32) Whoa, was this recorded on a VHS tape or something? (2:56) This video footage is now part of All the EarthBounds. :P (4:35) Yeah, it doesn't stand for bake sale or backspace here. :P (5:24) Hey there, Princess Zelda. How's it going? (6:03) At last, we have finally reached the title screen. (6:52) Mighty Boomerang? What? (7:01) The Power Bracelet doesn't look like a 🥐anymore. (7:29) Good to know how to save at any time. (8:59) "Widiz-B-ad". (9:14) Here we go. And, I notice the map is 8x8 instead of 8x16. (10:13) Beep beep. Game's gotta remind you that every 60 seconds, a minute passes. (11:19) Careful, those blue Leevers deal one full heart of damage to you. (12:01) Oh, this shop is different from usual. Normally, it's the shop where you can buy a candle, or very a overpriced Magical Shield and key. But here, it's the bomb and arrow shop, with just a sorta overpriced Magical Shield. (12:48) There's the save menu. Interestingly, choosing continue resumes you exactly where you were, instead of resetting you to the starting point with 3 hearts. (13:12) Uh, oh. The music is changing to indicate something is about to happen. (13:15) HOLD IT!!! Interesting that the game froze during a screen transition for this. (13:55) What's this? Oh, neat. So, you get sword beams regardless of your health. (14:17) Nice, got the bomb drop from the blue Octorok. (14:26) Start of level 1. And, the music doesn't switch just from entering a dungeon. (14:58) The Keese here respawned already? (15:14) Okay, it is official. They're named Zoras here, not Zolas. (15:35) Obligatory attack on the old man in the dungeon. :P (15:42) The flashing red rupee is just worth 1. And then you have the usual blue rupee that's worth 5. Yeah, it does seem odd for the red color to be used on the 1-rupee. (15:59) Whoa, Ropes in level 1? (16:02) DOUBLE KILL!! That's something that the sword beam cannot do in the original NES Zelda, as it'll only strike one target at a time even if multiple things are overlapping. (Of course, you can always directly stab multiple enemies at once.) (16:18) Seems that the enemies get more mercy invincibility than usual in this game. Gotta be honest, I'm not a fan of that. (16:28) "S" (16:36) Aw, the Gels don't look like Hershey's Kisses anymore. (16:48) Really, those traps hit you there? They honestly shouldn't have. So, this game apparently made the hitboxes less forgiving. I call shenanigans on that. (17:16) Bow get! Please don't die to the unforgiving trap hitboxes on the way out... (17:22) Oh, the traps didn't get you there that time. How come they got you on the way in then? Are the hitboxes out of whack in just one direction or something? (17:29) Okay, now please don't carelessly get killed by a Goriya's boomerang... (17:32) ...You carelessly got killed by a Goriya's boomerang... First death of this game. (18:12) Here's another musical cue that something's gonna something. (18:17) Ah, the sword beam buff you got 5 minutes ago wore off. You can still throw your sword if you're at full health like normal, though. (18:52) Yeah, I can "feel" the stickiness too by just watching you play, and I'm not a fan of it either. (19:56) Right, you never did let a hand grab you in the NES game at all. (20:11) Alright, it's boss time, vs. Aquamentus! (20:16) The fireballs may be slow, but you still let them hit you like a fool, dood. (20:25) Victory! Aquamentus still has the same 6 HP. Probably could've quickly slain him with just two bombs. (21:15) I'm glad you moved to a screen that contains enemies just in time for that effect to happen. ULTRA KILL!!

It's quite difficult to make out what the narration is saying, though I'm not sure there's a whole lot you can do about it. Lowering the volume of your voice would make the music overpower it and KZbin's autocaptions miss a lot of the narration.

5:11 Uh...kind of? According to the "official" timeline (I put that in quotes because god damn does Nintendo seem to struggle keeping a coherent narrative around this series), A Link To the Past (and its two sequels two decades later, A Link Between Worlds and Triforce Heroes) are actually _prequels_ to original Legend of Zelda. The overview is probably there because it's setting up the framework.
