When I was just 16 living in Edinburgh, Scotland and trying to get through my bike test, my neighbour had a Gold Star. I lusted after that machine. I would watch as he cleaned it and then as he took off having to slip the clutch as it had a close ratio gearbox. The sound stays with me to this day. I still ride age 73 (Triumph Speed Triple) but would love a Goldie!

Awesome, and thank you for starting in while astride the saddle. Don't know why it bothers me so much when people stand on the side and kick with their right foot. But it does. Good on ya for doing it the "right" way.

I owned a RGS, 873 GUA, a lovely bike, sounded great and as quick as my mates Bonnie. Looks as if this one has got twin carbs, not standard and no petrol drip tray to protect the mag. And the 190mm front brake, a great stopper

I have a 63 SR which has the same engine and performance as the RGS. I would put it in between the Bonnie and the 99 for performance. Much lower than the Norton 650ss for output. Those are quite a bit quicker than a Bonnie as well. And they handle! The BSA is great fun though. Just not that quick.

Beautiful bike, gorgeous sound. In the early 70’s, a friend of mine had a gold star DBD34 500 single, (I had a Triumph) a lovely looking bike, but he said it was a pig in town traffic, He said he could do up to 60mph in first gear? so in slow moving traffic, a lot of clutch slipping was required, and with no idle or tick over, stalling was an ever present danger. This A10 rocket goldstar looks better, sounds better, and I’m sure rides better than the iconic 500, with less bone shattering vibrations.

@aeroearth
@aeroearth 3 жыл бұрын
The DB and DBD34's could do (depending on final drive sprocket fitted) ~ 65 mph in first, 85 in second, 105 in third and whatever you could get in top. I saw 115 mph out of my DB34. My Brother In Law with girlfriend on the back on the way to the Isle of man races on his DBD34, saw 125 mph down a long hill on the trip up from Southampton to Liverpool. If configured in Touring specification with std. ratio gearbox, smaller valve head and smaller bore TT carburettor, normal handle bars and forward footrests, the BSA Gold Star was as handleable around town as any other single of the day. Don't recall vibration being an issue mainly as out of balance forces lay in the plane of the duplex frame. On all twins however they generated a "rocking couple" so likely vibrated more. One has to remember that parts of the Gold Star engine date back to 1926 with its fabricated crankshaft assembly with riveted in half shafts, albeit with cast steel flywheels and stronger shafts in the Gold Star. I bought my DB34 at age 18 fully intending to convert it to Rocket Gold Star spec. but after howls of derision from ALL my motorcycle acquaintances, that forced a rethink. Then, after discovering that with correctly adjusted valve clearances my as-bought (very second hand) DB34 Touring Gold Star would do 105 MPH in top, I resolved to change it to to the full Clubmans spec. instead, which I did over the next year or so.

I rode pillion on a DB34 riding from Southend -on -Sea to Hackney...where the 59 Club was situated originally...Of course in the mid sixties there wasn't the amount of traffic as now so didn't have the same problem as maybe a modern rider will have riding what is essentially a race bike..The huge Amal GP carburettor had a remote float bowl that had to be set correctly, however it was a racing instrument not meant to 'tick over'....Lovely bike, idiosyncratic, requiring TLC to get the best out of it...When you hear that 'twittering' you just know what it is...

If you type in “honest review of goldstar” a video on the classic motorcycle channel will appear that covers all of this. He basically says it’s a bike for riding alone on quiet roads out f tow as it’s basically a race bike.

I have 1961 model which I have owned since 1970. On the first of October 1971 it tried to kill me by seizing up at 70 mph in third gear just as I was attempting to out run a Morris 1000 police panda car. The bike sustained little damage unlike myself who spent about eight months in hospital undergoing various surgeries. Many years later I refurbished and rode the bike, unfortunately in the intervening years I had had the opportunity to ride slightly more modern machines, so my opinion may have been coloured by my experience riding the super sophisticated Suzuki SP 370. The A10 is difficult and heavy to start, especially on a cold morning, it is noisy, especially if you remove the Siamese pipe and fit twin pipes. It is slow, max 110 mph according to the speedo. it does not stop, single leading shoe front and back, it does not handle, self assembly bronze bush front forks, it vibrates so much double vision occurs at any thing over 3500 rpm. The 6 volt electrics contribute to an interesting night time riding experience, a torch is sometimes required to verify the function of the lighting system and whenever it is stationery for more than 30 seconds it marks it's territory with a nice black oil stain. Nevertheless it's an old British bike and back then it was the best an apprentice engineer could afford, £70. from Reg Kirby in Romford. I want slightly more for it now.

Hello Richard! I must confess, I have not restored them myself. And it has a rare double carburettor head. I don't use any additives, and I set the ignition by feel.The best thing to do is to ask at: www. bikersmill.de, they will surely help you!
@bikersmill6056
@bikersmill6056 Жыл бұрын
Please excuse the late reply. The compression is the same as from the factory. But there are different tuning stages, for example different camshafts. This one, however, has one of 300 produce two carburettor cylinder heads, which were originally only sold in the USA, and the second tuning stage, so it is easy to start, and reliable.

Please excuse the late reply. Mainly the mudguards are different, the frame is minimally different, from the A10 or the Rocket. Apart from the footrests being moved back. The engine is the same. But there are different tuning levels, for example different camshafts. This one, however, has one of 300 produce two carburettor cylinder heads, which were originally only sold in the USA, and the second tuning stage, so it is easy to start, and reliable.
