Time to look at the cylinder head with a view to reassembling it, but hold on, could this be the culprit for the reported noises in the first place?

I've had two engines which had issues with smoke in the exhaust because of valves/guides. One was a car engine that had valve guide oil seals that were shot and produced a puff of smoke at every gear change. The other was maybe a bit more unusual. It was a Triumph I had recently bought which was a bit smokey all the time, one cylinder slightly worse than the other, just enough to be annoying but smelling of burnt oil. I stripped the cylinder head and found grit, that I assumed to be grinding paste, in between the valve stems and the guides. This had worn the valve stems but the guides were unharmed. The piston crowns and combustion chambers were incredibly coked up, much worse than I thought possible. The bores were a little worn but within limits. I fitted new piston rings and valves plus decoked and cleaned everything. Afterwards, there was barely a trace of smoke and what there was could have been from the exhausts. I have never seen so much play as there was in those inlet valves.

Great video always but I had to laugh at your ( Quality Street) identification method for this engine. Once again your attention to detail will no doubt turn around the fortunes for this tired engine.

Hi Paul ,this brings back memories , i was in charge of a machine shop head bay for 4 years , you could blue that valve seat and see which matches , i dont think it'll matter with a light lap , also not sure if you have used it , CRC Gasket stripper removes carbon . Cheers .

I did wonder with the previous video whether the dark marking on the tops of the pistons was due to oil washing down worn inlet valve guides, as there'd be a good bit of suction in the inlet port during the over-run. Another great video...

G'day Paul, that motor must have been smoking badly, you would think with so much oil traveling down the valve stem due to the slack fit in the guide, hope you have found all the problems on that motor now, cheers mate, Neil 🤠.

Steady progress with the jigsaw special . Do you get much feedback from owners of the bikes and engines you build for them ? Another excellent video , thanks .

Thanks - sometimes owners will tell me how pleased they are, but mostly I don't get to hear much, although any issues usually don't take long for me to hear about them, but that doesn't happen too often, thankfully!

There would have been a real smoke-screen when you opened up after going downhill on a closed throttle unless the stem seals were unusually good.

There are no valve stem seals on these.

A good fit between valve and guide is all that is required to prevent smoke.

Wow, those guides are a bit sloppy. I would think that would have been going through quart a day.

Have you found anything other than the timing gear play which could be responsible for the "noise" necessitating the strip down?

Until i saw now the best advice is to avoid these engines triumph/bsa at any cost... the crankshafts bushes are crap...

I agree. So if you come across any of these demonic engines give me a shout and I'll take them away and give them a proper exorcism.
