Michael, nice video, as ever. A mod done by competition guys (and I did on my road C15) was to hacksaw the tail of that outer cover through, so that by removing one screw you could get access to the clutch cable/lever.. A lot of familiar stuff from 50 years ago here.... i used to cut the split pin short before putting it through the gear-change quadrant, (it was a right faff), but much neater than your effort!! Thank you for sharing your workshop again. Les in UK

So similar to the Tiger Cub. I had the inner cover off and on loads of times on the cub I used to have, made a mess with the gasket goo, until I realised you had to turn the ratchet anti clockwise a bit, very infuriating! When you were talking about the kickstarter spindle leaking oil it reminded me of the thick felt washer which goes over the gearchange lever shaft on the cub presumably to stop the same leaking problem, but as you say, no room on the kickstarter. Really enjoying the videos, thanks

HI Michael, thanks for the videos. regarding the kick start oil leak problem on the earlier c15s I tried the o ring solution but it did not make much difference and also prevented the kick start from returning correctly so my plan B was to machine a recess in the outer end of the inner cover and fit a oil seal, this worked a treat and did not affect the kick start ret

Your programs take me back a bit.had a few offroad c15s. I could never get the seal behind the sprocket to last very long. A large rubber washer cut from a old inner tube helped throw out dirt and mud.

The forward facing hole by the Camshaft bush in the inner timing cover is from a timed engine breather. There is a tiny hole down at the bottom of the cover, easily missed, that allows oil that is blown out from the breather to pass back into the oil pump cavity. The little scallop out of the rear of the outer cover is to allow the pressure to vent to atmosphere.

50 years ago , as a know nothing 16 year old, I took the side case off my C15 ... and all the gears and stuff fell out onto the dirt floor.... I never did get them all back in properly. That was an SS80 by the way..... with a megaphone silencer it was a bit loud ...

Happy New Year Michael Great video. Gearboxes gave always confounded me and it's great to see someone putting one together, including the tricky bits! My first bike at 16 was a 2nd hand SS80. I wanted a Starfire but couldnt afford it.The C15SS was fun but fragile and after a year was p/I'd against a T100SS. What a difference! Happy days!

Donno what it was like for you but that gearbox was frustrating for me, I did a similar box years ago I can't recall what on, could've been a C15 and my developing vocabulary vastly expanded. I saw the vid of your future projects and looking forward to them. Thank you for the vids over the last year Michael and Happy New Year to you and your family.

Good morning from the UK Michael. Surprised to see you not change the cam plate spring in the back of the gear box. Back in my youth I had quite a few c15 and the most prominent memory of most of them was pulling the gearbox apart to change yet another broken spring. :-)

No mention of the special bearing washer between first and next gears? I always put a locking washer under that selector nut. You need about 1.5 turns of starter spring, I use pump pliers to get mine on. It's a struggle.
@alanglen59023 жыл бұрын
That hole to the right of the cam shaft is the crank casing breather. You should have a corresponding hole in the cam so the engine breathing is timed. Alan

I thought the distributor pinch bolt screw had it's head under the cover and the slotted head was accessed via the small hole. I will have to rewatch, could have sworn it was not fitted. Great series, than you

Tbh not sure about adding a seal to the kickstart, unless you can add some meat somewhere to counter the removal of the material to add the seal, personally I would have looked at adding a small o ring to the kickstart shaft itself rather than modifying the case, looked plenty thick enough and wouldn’t be introducing any flex if put in the Center of where the bush is, cheers mate and happy new year! I have temporarily put a hose clamp on the kickstart shaft butted against the plate so it wouldn’t go boing while not looking. Or worse while looking.

Hi Michael, Happy New year to you and Linda. Regarding the kickstart oil leak, Would it be possible to cut a small groove around the kickstart shaft in line with the case and fit an O ring to the shaft rather than the hole in the case? It wouldn't weaken the shaft that much would it? I wish Royal Enfield had a large cover plate over the drive sprocket like the C15, It would save a lot of work when changing cogs!! Well that's it Stay Safe and enjoy your riding. Dave UK

Keith Bartlett. Sussex UK. I also noticed you didn't replace the worn out gearbox camplate spring 40-3042. Mine had been completely worn away & looked very much like yours so I replaced it although it did seem to make gear selection a bit stiff. Didn't you notice this or do you think it'll be OK to leave the old spring in place. Great series of videos as usual. Looking forward to next weeks episode. Happy new year & keep well.

Great videos, really interesting. Can you clarify a point you made regarding the installation of the oil feed and return pipes from the oil tank to the engine. you say you have crossed the pipes over, on my 1959 C15 the pipes are not crossed. now not sure which way round they should be. Keep up the good work.

Hello Jim. You will see in the next video that I was wrong. They only cross for the end feed cranks you will see how I found out.

Happy new year Michael As your putting the gearbox in and without trying to sound stupid but what /who determines the ratios?

Usually determined at the factory for a particular application. Owners often mix and match gear sets to suit as well.

That split pin is piss poor, cmon! Someone might follow this and do the same thing, make the split pin smaller and fold each end round. As someone who had some good ideas some of the things undertaken are piss poor and done the 10 times harder way than needed.
