Why does everyone not include that dazai literally told akutagawa that there was going to be a lot of pain? He gave him two options, dazai would give him and his sister a house, basic necessities, and would let him live a normal life, or akutagawa could join the port mafia. Akutagawa heard there would be a lot of pain in the port mafia but still joined.

I hate the war in the comments 😭 Like, can we all agree that every character in bsd is morally grey and did at least one bad thing in life? (Not Kenji, never Kenji ❤) Like, do y'all remember the scene where Kunikida literally electrocuted Akutagawa when he purposely threw an electroshocker into the water where the other was standing? Or do you always ignore the fact that Yosano TORTURES people??? How Tanizaki IS ABLE TO KILL if it's necessary??? Yes, Dazai may be a sinner, but let's not forget that he was in awful environment since childhood and even before meeting Mori he had mental issues (there were also hints that Dazai knew the previous PM boss before Mori. His parents are also probably alive, because it was said that Dazai wasn't an orphan). Can we take a moment and think? Dazai is not goody shoes, yes, but would you have kindness in your heart if you lived in a world where everyone hurt and disregarded each other? Has Dazai ever felt kindness before meeting Oda? Dazai wasn't okay before meeting Mori and his arrival to the Mafia only worsened the state. And yeah, there might have not been physical abuse, but did we all forget how clever Mori is? Mori loves power and he will find a way to have it. He is also skilled in manipulation n psychological torture. Yes, Dazai might have seen through it, but it doesn't mean it didn't work or something. Let's not forget how in Dark Era the guards were ready to shoot Dazai when he tried to leave Mori's office and run to Odasaku as well. Maybe it's because I'm too empathetic, but i do not feel negative emotions towards anyone in bsd, even Mori (except for fear ig. Every bsd character is terrifying ngl. Only Atsushi feels safe 💀). I do not justify their actions, but i HATE when people do not try to understand the character and then try to make the characters demonic while the others saints. There's no saint in bsd.

You cant just hurt people because you were hurt before, it’s not right, no matter how you to stretch it. Not once did I say it was unexpected so I dont know why you’re asking what did I expect. A bad past and trauma never excuses abuse, I say this as someone who has been through abuse. Yes, it lead to violent tendencies, but what I did in the past is still wrong.

(I am posting this as an individual comment, but this was originally a reply to a whole comment's comment section of mischaracterasation) TLDR: Dazai isn't a good or bad person, he's a complex, morally grey character, and everything he does has a reason. For him, the ends justify the means. You can't look at what Dazai's done through a black and white lens or label it as 'good' or 'bad'. He's a complex, morally grey character with the mindset of "the ends justify the means." Now, I agree, this doesn't excuse his actions and doesn't make what he did to Akutagawa okay. But please do realise that Akutagawa asked Dazai for a reason to live and he did willingly join the mafia, and Dazai gave Akutagawa what he asked for. Akutagawa's reason to live is Dazai's approval, and the only way Dazai could achieve that was by doing what he did. Now, that doesn't make it okay, but you people seriously need to stop seeing everything that's not 100% okay as something immediately bad. Edit: don't know if this is really related to the comments but decided I'll rant a bit about Dazai leaving the mafia "If both sides are the same to you, then be a good man." Those are Oda's exact words, or they are in the dub at least. This literally shows that Dazai is extremely morally grey. He doesn't classify the sides as 'good' or 'bad', and I agree with that statement as well. I love Dazai's character. I personally enjoy morally grey characters in general, since most of the time my morals are similar to theirs. That's why it pisses me off when people try to categorise someone as 'good' or 'bad' when they literally can't be put in either of those boxes. Dazai joined the Mafia in hopes to find a reason to live, in hopes of feeling the natural instinct of wanting to survive. "You told me you exposed yourself to violence and bloodshed in hopes of finding a reason to live. Well you won't. No matter how hard you search, nothing in this world is going to fill the loneliness inside you." that's what Odasaku said (or it's close, I'm taking the quotes from my memory rn lol). He literally told Dazai that he won't find the only thing that was keeping him in the mafia. "If both sides are the same to you, then become a good man. At least it would make your world a little more beautiful." Dazai didn't leave just because Odasaku told him to, he left because he actually listened to his advice. He decided for himself, he left because being in the mafia was useless to him, since he won't be able to find the one thing he's looking for, so he listened to Odasaku's advice and left the mafia. People often overlook this as Dazai blindly doing what Oda said for *him*, not realising that this is genuinely a great showcase of just how much Dazai trusted Oda. He was willing to take his advice, to trust that Odasaku was right about what he said. He could've just ignored what he said, he could've decided that Odasaku didn't know what he was talking about and stayed in the mafia. But he didn't. Now I may or may not have accidentally lost my train of thought because my cat jumped on me, so my next paragraphs might be somewhat unrelated to my previous one lmao I think that Dazai deciding to leave the mafia greatly showcases a part of how he thinks. Dazai joined the Port for his own benefit, and once he realised that it actually won't benefit him anymore, he left, and instead joined the light, seeing as that would benefit him more than staying in the dark. Dazai doesn't care about moral labels, he cares about what the outcome in the end will be. As I already said, for him the ends justify the means. Similarly, he mostly does things that benefit him in some way. Joining the ADA was more beneficial than staying in the PM, taking Atsushi into the agency would also benefit him in the end. After the guild tried to destroy Yokohama he was still willing to get Fitzgerald's help to find Fyodor, even though Francis still was technically a criminal and could in some ways be considered an enemy. He worked with Fyodor and Shibusawa in the dead apple movie for a bit, even though they were the enemy, just because it would benefit him when it came to his plan. Hell, he even saved Sigma in the elevator because he would be able to access Fyodor's memories. He let Kyouka kidnap him because that was also useful to him, helping him gather information on the bounty placed on Atsushi. Almost everything Dazai does is for his own benefit or to further his own agenda. He is willing to use and manipulate people, he is willing to kill people, he is even willing to risk himself getting killed as well if something goes wrong in his plans, all in order to achieve the end result he needs. Anyways, I just needed to express my frustration because, as someone who thinks in a similar way to this, I hate it when peoole try to label morally grey characters as good or bad Also, sorry for any grammar mistakes, English is my 2nd language
