I am at such a low rank that I focus on the heroes that I know how to play rather than the meta. I still have not a great grasp of all the mechanics of the game that at least I don’t have to learn a whole new hero-pool

Slark can harass many carries pretty well even early-game due to the passive, the leash mobility ability, passive hp regen when not in sight from barracuda, and the damaging aoe dispel for securing last hits- not even talking the ult here- make him a menace in any lane tbh. The only way I see him being countered outright is by heroes like Axe who counter-attack on hit, which is where he would encounter them in off-lane usually instead of safe since Axe builds P3 items and isn't *really* a damage hero. Real big risk here is abaddon who *is* in play more frequently now. You can just walk a little bit outside the lane out of vision and get fountain healing once you get a level in ult basically, and even without ult that's still ~10+ hp/s just for standing closer to your easy jungle farms. Basically his strength is that you can push him out of lane but it will not take him long to re-enter it, and that may very well spell your death. He's the ultimate harasser if you play him in OL, your only limitation is mana items and that you aren't *actually* as tanky as a P3 normally is- but you can make space for your team just the same way. When you get out of the laning phase, you can split push towers if they're making it hard to get ganks on their squishies, if they go on you then you use your delayed dispel and pop ult when it's about to run out, heal to full while running away faster than they can catch up; force TP scroll, spell use, and reset rather easily (ult is 30s cd at max ranks, you might as well- right? Basically a pocket BKB). Get kills and you get armor, so you can tank more tower hits and more physical hero hits- you can rely more on magic resist items so the only real way to deal with slark is pure damage and BKB exists- so does ult. He can even use the leash ability as an escape ability when needed to ignore slows or make it harder to apply slows. All in all his kit is pretty solid for it imho, but maybe I'm missing some itemization that counters him (blademail?). I don't play ranked so take everything said here with a grain of salt, I'm nowhere near known as a competitive player- this is just what I see from Slark's kit that make him terrifying on paper to me even if he takes a bit to get proper kill threat.

When you learn a hero - do you guys play ranked or unranked?

For me, maybe a few (1-5) games of unranked if I'm really new to the hero, after that I continue to practice in ranked. Two problems with unranked imo: 1) people play the game less seriously so you don't get the same 'quality' of practice 2) since there's no (un)ranked roles, you cannot reliably spam your hero in your position, which makes it harder to learn a new hero.

Turbo for several games, then normal, then ranked. If you learn heroes in ranked you'll games and get reported - it's very obvious when you don't know how to play the hero.

Turbo when you're very new to hero. It's good because the game goes fast so you get into the mechanics and builds very, very quickly. Yes it's very different from ranked but we don't care about that yet.

have people not seen Slark offlane? thats some old school stuff when you would have a jungle and you are solo Slark you get that solo xp which lets you get 6 quicker for the sustain and with your abilities you can harass the carry if they are ever left alone and pounce to get away.

if you're playing solo slark offlane, you will be forced out of exp zone or get double pulled by enemy pos 5. This is almost guaranteed in any ancient level games or above.
