A Dream Differed: I AM SO GLAD I FOUND THIS VIDEO....Life happens, and I have just made the decision to try to enter nursing instead of my dream of going to medical because I am not financially, or mentally able--neither physically healthy enough--to support myself while I try apply for medical school. my mother who never went to college is not able to hold a job and make enough money to support us so I have decided this route. Granted I have two undergrad degrees, which have not gotten any good jobs at all. I have always respected noble profession of nursing, having worked along side many nurses as a CNA, I have seen first hand the interaction or impact nurses have on patients. While it hurts me to make this decision, I don't see it as a set down, as I stated before I believe that nursing is a noble profession. Lastly, this video was very reassuring for me not to give up on my dream of becoming a doctor, and that going from BSN to MD is possible. Thank you sir!

Yes! I'm in the same boat. I am a single parent and want to become a doctor but there is no way I can pay for bills throughout medical school. I have zero financial support or help with my child, since the few family I have live out of state. I want the financial stability and experience of a great career in the health field and I am 2 years away from my BSN. I have been driving myself crazy with what to do and have been losing sleep over it. Knowing that it is possible to go this route eases my mind so much!!

Do medical schools discriminate against fresh graduates with a nursing bachelors degree? Are nursing bachelors common applicants for medical schools...Meaning, do they stand out less? This made me feel better about my consideration. I am close with 80% of the doctors I work and a few have suggested I go to med school. I always made some excuse to why it wouldn’t work. I have two children or I’m too old, or my wife would not like that. I pursued a position in leadership instead and have been a nursing supervisor in a mental health prison. Your points make me feel good because I check many of the areas you speak on. I have always been a “why” person and always found myself learning from the doctors or researching on my own to get the why. This of course is not required of me as a nurse but it really interested me. I want to be able to lead and have that autonomy and I think medicine is where it is for me. Thank you for this video as it is helping me move to that next step in decision making.

In being autistic, I had to learn to self regulate my behaviors. It wasn't something I just walked in and intuitively knew how to do. But the benefit of that is I've learned to very intuitively shut the hell up and just observe. In positions like you mentioned where you are going from a position where you have some level of seniority and clinical knowledge to being the low person, I've learned to accept that, for lack of a better word, abuse, and take it with an open mind. Don't just write it off as people abusing seniority, or because the first thing they said was dumb the rest of what they had to say is equally stupid. Take what is said, learn to say OK, and disseminate that quietly to yourself. You'll find that there's still quite a lot to learn that way.

Omg u r sooo right.. thx so much for all your insightful videos .. I worked in various areas of nursing for almost 19yrs now but I knew I wanted to go into another field .. my interest was in pharmacy but since moving into critical care for a year and half now.. all I want to do is go into is medicine.. my daughter is actually calling me obsessed bc all I do in my free time is listen to medical lectures in KZbin or to medical students/residents.. my favorite lectures are from medcram .. but there are other excellent ones. My interest developed just from observing doctors, residents round in our unit.. I pay very close attention in their presentation of cases.. one fellow is actually inviting me to round wt them.. for now I just stick with my patient/s.. I bought some O chem textbooks flightnurse 2 md KZbinr said helped him a lot. And I am listening to science lectures from khan academy.. I hope to start my remaining prerequisites this fall.. I’ll get some of your MCAT classes once I’m ready to tackle it... I’m involving in more PI projects and teaching opportunities in my facility..and yes my specialty will be anesthesia .. hope to do fellowship in cardiothoracic anesthesia and pain management... thx so much .. u will be hearing from me..

In my heart of hearts I feel like becoming an MD/DO would be more rewarding, but the journey seems arduous. I also feel like CRNA school would be faster but HARDER, like in a toxic, soul destruction type of way. The uncertainty has me frozen, but I HATE accepting the idea that THAT fear means I'm not ready to transition

Thank you for the video! I’m in undergrad currently working toward getting my BSN. I chose to Major in Nursing because I feel like it will give me a better understanding and a better sense of compassion for my patients when I become a doctor. I am curious as to whether I should change my major to chemistry or biology simply for the easier transition into medical school. My question to you and if you could possibly do a video addressing young undergraduate students who are majoring in nursing with the intention of going to medical school as soon as they get their BSN? I am currently trying to take the prerequisites for medical school while I am taking the prerequisites for Nursing school. And if you could list the prerequisites for medical (even though they vary from school to school) that are most common that would be greatly appreciated! Thank you for taking your time to read this! Going from being a nurse to a MD seems like you’re sacrificing a significant amount of quality of life and taking on a huge amount of responsibility for a little more money and prestige. Why would anyone want to endure that hardship for such little reward? What are reasons that people have to undertake this transition, that are strong enough to sustain that effort? What successes have you seen and what were their core motivations for wanting to transition to medicine?

Holistic Care It’s not about the money. Medical school is hard, heck even nursing school is harrrrd. We don’t go into this just for the money. The reason why we would put ourself through that “awful” journey is because it’s our passion. It’s what we love to do. If anyone goes into medicine/ nursing for the money, they will not have a good time at all. They are going into this for all the wrong reasons.

Hopefully this gets seen. A couple of questions, I'm 33 years old. I've always excelled academically and more so in the workplace. Spent 13 years in the oilfields, and have just transitioned into healthcare. The plan. I'm a CNA right now, enrolled in a phlebotomy program in Houston TX. I'm starting over Step 1: get a phlebotomy job at the hospital, get established their. Step 2: get into a CNA to RN (associates) bridge program. Stay at the same hospital, try to leverage CNA and phleb. Exp. And RN licence and become an acute care RN. Step 3: Work and get a BSN. From what I understand the BSN will cover the med school prerequisites. Pass the test and apply for med school. (Take tips from vid. While a RN/BSN) Step 4: Bite the bullet and suffer through 2 years of school, and get to the residency. I can survive on 17-20k a year. (Residencey income as I understand) .....im 33. Am I overlooking anything serious, a glaring flaw? Am I to old for this?

Blender Bender don’t do this. Becoming a doctor is sooooo stressful and so much debt, just become a nurse practitioner; they make 100,000. And even if you did this process there’s still a possibility you won’t be able to get a job being an M.D.

BSN programs do not cover medical school prerequisites. I spent 1.5 years being pre med before switching to nursing, and the prerequisites only overlap a few classes (I am in Texas as well). You would have to complete your BSN then another couple years of upper level science courses such as biochemistry, physics and organic chemistry. Also, it takes 4 years to get your M.D. before you can match into a residency program. I wouldn't say you're too old but take an honest look at your timeline. It will take you a lot longer than what you've written out here.

Dr.Pinesett, I currently have been a nurse for three years in a level one trauma unit in the emergency department and I am considering taking the MCAT and transitioning into the medical field but before I do so I had a few questions to ask you : 1) I recently read that you can get into med school with a BSN without having to take the extra science courses that a premed major would take. Is that true? 2) If question #1 is true, then what medical schools would take a BSN degree?

Hi Dr. Pinesett, I have one question: First, WOW! What an inspiration you are, thank you! I just got accepted to a one year accelerated BSN program, UConn in Connecticut. I took General Chemistry I, General Biology I and other undergraduate science courses required for nursing which are required as well for medical school pre-requisites. Once I finish my BSN degree and earn experience as a nurse and ready to begin my transition to pre-med, would I have to re-take the science courses I already took a couple of years ago prior to BSN? I've heard that if 5 years have passed since you took a science course, it will expire and you have to re-take it again to apply to pre-med. Is this true? I would have to re-take General Biology and Chemistry, Physics, etc? Sorry for the long questions but this is a bit concerning to me. I look forward to hearing from you. Jean

@PremedProductivity
@PremedProductivity 6 жыл бұрын
ccardenas2684 I appreciate your sentiment, but that would be an extension of your nursing duties. You want doctors to evaluate you as a potential doctor. Additionally, I didn’t mean literally before or after your shift, it could be on your off day. Most nurses work 3-4 days per week. Plenty of time to commit to your future.

Dr. Andre Pinesett: The Pre-med Productivity Expert You’re absolutely right. Maybe it’s my graveyard shift mentality talking, because I wouldn’t want to come in on my day off. But it would be a good idea to shadow. Thank you for your insight, subscribed!

Hey Dr. Pinesett, is it true that med schools don’t recognize nursing clinical courses as full time? For example, I’m a nursing student and taking 4 courses in a semester in which 2 of them are clinicals, does this mean they only look at the other 2 courses that are not clinical which then will count as a part time student since those clinical courses only give an experiential pass of fail?

If you start your pre-reqs now I think it will take you 2 years or more, plus medical school 4, plus residency minimum 2 years so if you start now you will be at least 48 when you start practicing medicine. That would be less than 2 decades being a doctor, you can do it!If it is your dream do it before its even less time to practice medicine.

Dr. Pinesett, I am 40 years old, been a nurse for over 15 years. I am now a nurse manager. But, my only dream ever has been to become a physician- for various reasons. Is it wise for me to make that transition right now? Why or why not? Thank you so much. Your video instilled that spark in me all over again.

I'm considering which docs I can ask for recommendation letters and there are not many. Mostly because the male docs on my unit are rude. For instance, when you ask them a question or update them on patient needs, they just stare at you like you said something dumb. There will be a long awkward pause before they answer. Maybe they just like to see young nurses(I'm 24 but look like 18 or 20) sweat, but I really dislike that behavior. We only have 2 pleasant female docs on my unit but they don't work with my unit often so no time to build a personal rapport. What should I do?
