What Happens When You Apply a Rivet Nuts to Wood / Woodworking DIY

I tried applying the rivet (pop) nut used for joining thin steel plates to wood.
The test wood used was plywood, red pine, rubber wood, walnut wood, merbau, etc. The results were not suitable for soft wood (red pine), but good results for hard wood. If it is used for woodworking such as a knob, it seems to be easier to use than the existing nut.

What's needed is a rivnut whose expansion zone isn't adjacent to the top of the fastener, but closer to the end so it expands with more wood above it to provide pullout resistance.

...or fit the rivnut on to the back of the piece so that the bolt is pulling it into the piece, not out of it.

You can make the bulge on the nut happen further down into the wood by wrapping wire around the shaft near the top of the nut. That way when the screw compresses the nut, it can't do it right at the top -- the wrapped wire prevents that compression there.

Try the longer ones meant for thicker plates. Crimple zone is further down the pop nut

I'm pretty sure if you drilled those holes deeper than you did it would not try pushing out while you were installing the part. If you watch it's pushing out because the bolts are bottoming out on the back side pushing the whole thing out before it can start to expand.

I had a real specific need a while back, and it did not need to be real strong and I ended up using some of these in a concrete wall. I drilled a hole just slightly larger than the rivet nut, coated the outside with an epoxy, inserted and compressed. Held like a champ.

Put the rivnut in from the back (if possible) and the flange will pull against it instead of pulling out the weaker expanded part.

Nitonakrętka była stworzona do łączenia cienkich blach za pomocą połączeń śrubowych lecz bez dostępu z jednej strony i niemożności wykonania gwintu w zbyt cienkiej blasze o wystarczającej sile na rozciąganie takiego połączenia. Można nitonakrętkę stosować do innych materiałów ale trzeba liczyć się właśnie z mniejszą trwałością związaną z mniejszą wytrzymałością danego materiału niż metale. Ja używałem nitonakrętek w tworzywach sztucznych. By nie uszkadzać tworzywa i wzmacniać mocowanie dodatkowo dodawałem metalową podkładkę, co nie zawsze jest możliwe.

That was my exact thinking. The manufacture could move the crumple zone a few mm toward the bottom of the nut and you have a fantastically stong connection.

Since rivnuts are brand specific... try a plus nut or split nut designed to flare around an inch back from the face. From experience, the nut must be matched to the material thickness.

Try a prebulbed style? I often just epoxy rivnuts into wood after I've scratched a rough surface on the nut. It's good for making jigs, but if you want it to last, I always use the stainless steel EZ-Lok threaded inserts. Other threaded inserts tend to be too soft for most aspects. You can use the rivnuts in your video for things like aluminum or steel that is on a woods surface.

You should try it with rivet nuts intended for thicker materials. It moves the “weakened” part farther from the surface. I bet it would work even better. This has me thinking how pop rivets would work!🤔

There are threaded screw inserts which are specifically designed for soft wood 😅 Might want to look into that if you work with this a lot. I have seen a type which is self-tapping as well, so you don't need to pre-drill holes first. Good stuff👌

При тесте на отрыв. Нужно учесть что болт упирается в древесину и вытаскивает основание. А нужно было тогда просверлить глубже отверстия под болт.

На мой взгляд на видео очень доступно продемонстрировано, что всё таки резьбовая заклёпка не очень удачный вариант для дерева. Гораздо лучше на эту роль подходят втулки с метрической резьбой внутри и крупной резьбой для дерева снаружи.

Where possible the nutsert can be installed behind , with a thro hole in the wood to fasten from the opposite end. Will be more robust.

Para resolver el problema en la madera, tan sencillo como poner una arandela para que la presión la absorba ésta y no se hunda. Así lo hago y me funcilna a la perfección.

같은 수종이라고 심재(안쪽)와 변재(바깥쪽)에 따라 다르고 건조율에 따라서도 다를 수 있습니다. 그런데 일반적으로는 레드파인은 소나무 종류라 소프트 우드쪽에 속하고 고무나무 멀바우 호두나무 등은 하드우드에 속합니다. 멀바우나 호두나무도 변재 쪽은 심재에 비해 연합니다. 어느 쪽을 사용하느냐에 따라 달라질 것 같습니다. 일반적으로나 제가 기계로 가공하면서 느끼는 목재의 강도는 삼나무
