The important thing to remember, is that you must use a wired ETHERNET cable to your PC or IMac to get the very best speed. I just could not understand why my speed was so erratic, when using just a WiFi signal. I suppose its common sense, a Wifi signal can never surpass a wired connection, but ive been using WiFi for some years, so got used to it. On my 900 fibre, i was occasionally seeing speeds of 400, and as low as 120mbs. I called an engineer out, he plugged his laptop in my modem, and hey presto, 1.1Gb speed. Plugging the ethernet cable into my WiFi disc, and plugging it into the back of my computer, speeds as high as 640, in a upstairs room. That ethernet cable is vital for the optimum performance

Interesting to hear your and others experience, I’ve paid for 500 down for the last 8 months and haven’t had any issues. Consistent speeds too. The new home hub is the best BT have ever supplied, probably worth the RRP they’re trying to sell for. But I switched to ubiqiti kit for my networking. I think I can get that 900 packages (north east Scotland), but most websites servers are going to rate limit bandwidth, so they often don’t serve at the 500 speed I’ve found. Amazing for steam though, I had a HDD and for once it was the slowest part. NVME is the way to go clearly!

So I got the full 900 but whenever I do a speed test, the highest result I've had was 290Mbps down and 95 up but I should be getting a minimum of 450 Mbps to my understanding. Also, that's what BT says as my Stay Fast Guarantee (SFG) . I've given it almost a week but the result is pretty much the same. Whenever I do a speed check on my BT app, it shows that from the cabinet to my house is within SFG but between the router and my devices is where approximately 300 Mbps is showing.

We originally started with dial up many years ago. A few years ago we had the fttp installed to our house. The current contract with Zen finishes next month and I have just ordered this 900 mbps service. The Zen was supposed to be 150mbps but for about a year it was less than 30 but upload was consistent with 30mbps. About 6 months ago it jumped back up to a proper speed of 130+mbps. Wheb Zen took over the fibre optic line they sent out Openreach subcontractors which they didn't needf to do. They plated around with the box outside where the optic cable entered an told me they had spliced it (???). I was connected to BY and Zen for a short time which I was told shouldn't happen. I just hope I have better luck this time. I have a few routers in the cupboard but I shall try the Bt one first which is the one running now.

Hi Ryan, Thank for the clear explanation. BT has never been my number one IP to go for, however, after moving house I had no other option, and I have to agree with you, the service has been getting better and better over the years and this new router looks amazing and so far has delivered the promise speed for my plan/area. The only downside using BT routers is the painful process to connect smart lights, smart speakers, smart switches, anything that is "smart" in the BT world = Painful installation. I don't know if you have any tips to make this "smart" set up easier with a BT router apart from changing the signal to only transmit at 2.4Gz before starting the set up of a new smart item. Anyway, great work, first time seeing your videos and also subscribed.
@theryanthomas4 жыл бұрын
Thanks Ricardo. That’s great news that you’ve got the new service. I’ve never had any luck with the new router/MFND and so I’ve not tried using smart devices with it. If you ever build up a smart home, I’d recommend trying a third party unit for better reliability :)
@rxss61543 жыл бұрын
The best thing i did to get around this with all my smart stuff is split the router to give out 2.4Gz and 5Gz so you have 2 SSIDs, then you can connect all your smart stuff and any older devices on the 2.4Gz network and any newer stuff on the 5Gz network Hope that helped :)

4:25 it's unlikely that an issue with your console's mechanical disk. Even if it's fitted with a slower 5400RPM disk they can typically write sequentially in excess of 90/100MBps which is at the top end of a Gigabit link. If I had to guess it's due to either a limited WLAN connection or if hardwired to a switch it might just be an under powered NIC.

@JudeTheYoutubePoopersubscribe4 жыл бұрын
They're greedy
@JackFellOver4 жыл бұрын
It is partly an infrastructure issue and partly greed. Openreach provides FTTP through GPON (Gigabit Passive Optical Network) split between several houses. This is in contrast to PtP - Point to Point fibre networks, in which each subscriber has their own dedicated fibre. GPON is asymmetrical, which means that the download is much faster than the upload, although this can be upgraded to XGS-PON (or 10Gb Symmetrical Passive Optical Network) fairly easily with a technology swap at either end of the fibre. Even though this upgrade is possible, it's unlikely to happen any time soon due to: 1) Business-class leased lines with symmetrical speeds make lots more money than consumer lines and upgrading would cannibalise these. That's is where the greed part comes in! 2) Only ~14% of the UK has FTTP. Openreach are focused on rolling it out rather than upgrading for the time being. 3) Unnecessary expense - not many people would take the premium, faster packages, so is upgrading the infrastructure really worth it for just a few people? Not an expert, just taking my guess

Unless the PS4 has slower WiFi maybe. Full size hard drives write at roughly 140MBs/s. The laptop in your PS4, according to Google images, is a laptop hard drive, which will spin at 5,400rpm. The link below (under HDD vs. SSD & SATA 2.0 vs. 3.0 section) says that the standard PS4's hard drive should write at about 73MBs/s. Something like that. 37MBs, 300Mbits, is quite low for a hard drive that can write at roughly 70MBs/s. techgage.com/article/sonys-playstation-4-pro-system-performance-hdd-vs-ssd-testing/

Having just had the 900 service activated a few days ago...2yr contract 52.99 with bt now and a years free xbox ultimate game pass if you have an xbox. I live in a flat so its what BT call an MDU install (multi dwelling unit) Little grey box which Ryan has outside his house is above our Front door in the communal stairwells. Simple drill into the wall above the front door then the 1-2mm fibre thread is glued in my case to the ceiling corners and run through to my office to which a little box size of a 2 cig boxes the spare fibre is stored and then run up to the 'Modem' box against size of a 2x cib boxes. Here you then simply plug in your cat 5e cable to the Wan port on the HUB 2 very simple process all done in around 90mins. First speed test 899/110 and i have been testing it regularly since friday and been bang on all the time. Downloads getting around 95MB a sec from steam. The Xbox reports a 955mbs connection speed which in the real world should be about 1 GB every 10 seconds....Downloaded an 8GB game took about 90 seconds so about right. The PS5 is a little weird is was reporting various speeds highest being 575Mb and as low as 420Mb even though at the same time the xbox was showing 955? not sure if the PS5 test procedure is a little off but anyway. Similiar downloads in reality did a 21gig download in around 2.5mins so throughput is the same. Great price I think for gigabit broadband and so far 100% reliable. Going to see how the hub behaves I never had any issues with the BT FTTC service if I'm honest.

Great video mate, we go live with 900mb onTuesday with FTTH, one question BT guy couldn’t answer: can I use the Hub 1, which is better for me as I can split the GHz which is very handy...unlike the Hub 2 which you can’t. Why would I want that you may ask, well I would rather set my Ring Camera to 2.4 so it has a solid connection most of the time, not fluctuate between 2.4 and 5 as there may be a day someone comes into the back garden and it decides to flick GHz channel and loses the recording....which isn’t good :(
@krisdeb4 жыл бұрын
I can answer the question easily for you - unplug the junk and start using real stuff which will allow you to fully utilise the full fibre connection. Anything will be better than this BT Hub, believe me.

Just upgraded to the Full Fibre 900 and unfortunately I have not been hitting anywhere close to the 910mb download that was advertised. I tend to only get around 240mb or if I'm lucky 410. My upload is fine I always tend to get around 100mb which was advertised its just the download thats the problem. I always use a wired connection and I never get anywhere near the 910mb that was advertised. I have looked around and many people are saying its a problem with the smart hub 2 and apparently an update is meant to come out in October.
@theryanthomas4 жыл бұрын
Hi Kev. I’ve seen reports of this being an issue with the SH2. You can’t rule out other possibilities but it’s likely. If all fails, I recommend purchasing a third party MFND to give you the correct speeds.

Quite a high ping for full fibre! With ADSL, we had 3Mbps down and 12 - 15ms ping and with VDSL2 now we get 80Mbps and 9ms - 11ms ping. Now waiting for my VM install, FTTP from BT not available here and won't be for a long time... VM will be 500Mbps FTTP service (their new network) and Coax last metre.

Hi mate. A 50mbps connection should be enough for streaming, gaming, and messaging. The package shown in this video would be way over the top for the kind of thing you’re talking about. You’d be very VERY comfortable with a connection like this. Cheers

No sort of fibre, to cabinet or premises available here, and I'm (just) within Greater London. ADSL over a copper pair is the best we can get. This is giving about 11 Mb/s down and 1.1 up. download is reasonable but a faster upload would be useful. I'm quite a distance from the exchange and I think it's actually pretty remarkable that they manage to get 11 Mb through that, it's faster than Ethernet was not that many years ago. I'm old enough to remember 110 Baud modems by the way.

Stephen, we had a similar situation max 11 Mb/s down , staying in a semi rural small town in Scotland . Gave up on BT and went with 3 4g home broadband we average out in the 30-40 Mb/s down and 20 up. We got a new deal at unlimited downloads for £16 a month usually around £22. Though low and behold Openreach is installing ultrafast in our area , we should have access to it in the next coupe of months. I also remember the treacle slow modems :-) kzbin.info/www/bejne/mZzGZ4uJiM1oaNk

You're not going to see faster speeds over wifi... you will need a hard wired connection. Reason being is most devices are only 1x1 or 2x2 mimo.
