Quick tip. You can buy Velcro in 2x4 pieces. That’s almost the exact size of the radio mounting bracket. I use the Velcro to attach my radios and other equipment in my vehicles. The Velcro holds really well, and can be removed. Unlike screws that leave permanent holes. Just a suggestion for you all. And another awesome video. Although it’ll make me buy yet another GMRS radio i don’t need. 😢

Great review as always, Randy. I'm glad to see another company making an all-in-microphone style radio other than Midland. I wish Wouxan would also take a swing at this style. I feel this kind of radio is the best fit for my vehicle (Subaru Forester) given the available dash space. I also hope that BTech or Wouxan make a 50W version, too. Perhaps by the grace of Zenu they will hear my prayer...? 🙏

I wanted to love this thing, but it went back to Amazon after a couple weeks. Having to open the squelch to change the volume was annoying but I guess I could put up with it. The speaker was quiet and it was always up at max volume (and had to hold it up to my ear half the time) and then after a couple weeks, the squelch stopped working in that it would almost never open (even with REALLY strong signal) unless you hit the Monitor button. Replaced it with a DB20-G and have had a much better experience.

I've been looking at this radio for my Honda Pioneer. Almost pulled the trigger on it a couple times. Glad I didn't since the transmitting power is a lot lower than advertised. I actually emailed BTech and asked them about this discrepancy. They responded with, despite what you say, their radios transmit at 20 watts. I honestly would prefer a radio that could transmit at at least 25 watts, but I would settle for 20 watts. Not 12 watts.
@deadreckoning41322 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I was thinking the same thing but you know, I think they do this due to the small size. I've heard that other small mobile radios have problems overheating if they put out too much power.

I'll just plug CHIRP software. If you have a radio that you want/need to program, and it is supported by CHIRP ({cough} Yaesu-better check! {cough}) it is probably worth the investment in time to get the free software and the few dollars to get the appropriate cable. This is especially true if it is a radio you are going to change often - say take on trips where there are different configurations from your "home" area. I've used CHIRP even from a small Raspberry Pi 4B.

I bought this model radio a couple of weeks or so, ago. It has better features than the Midland offerings, but two things will likely not see it mounted in my car. It is apparently devoid of a front end, possibly as a result of having a Direct Conversion receiver, or as Randy says, "a super homodyne" receiver. Picks up tons of noise, intermod, and other unwanted stuff, even driving late at night through our capital city. The other, as I understand it, is the "speaker" jack. As I understand it, subject to correction, you cannot just plug in a standard external speaker on this radio as you can with most. It uses odd non-standard plugs which DO give you the advantage of plugging into your car's sound system, but a regular external speaker, not so much. Also, using the car's sound system is likely a PITA if you turn off the engine while listening. I haven't tried it but that is my estimation of how things would likely play out. Great review as always!

14W vs 20W may not make a huge difference in real-world performance but it is 30% less or about 2dBm - if you're trying to get a certain performance, and selecting your feed line and antenna that's a lot of variability to account for. Maybe they can't afford a Farsometer 2000? Are they just making stuff up?

Two questions: since this mobile is only programmable with the CHIRP program and it can only be downloaded to a desktop or laptop; does one have to have a laptop to program in a vehicle? I have the Btech Pro therefore I can program anywhere with my phone. Second question: I enjoy monitoring local fire and police. They operate in the 100.000 frequencies. @TheNotaRubicon Жыл бұрын
The MXT275 is much more simple to setup/use, but is also very limited in what it can do. The GMRS-20V2 is more complicated, but also has many more features. Watch my review of the MXT275 for more info.

Will antenna choice affect the ability to receive NOAA channels or other channels outside the GMRS range? ie; is a "dual band" antenna better than a GRMS tuned antenna for this specific radio?
@TheNotaRubicon2 жыл бұрын
Yes - you want an antenna that is tuned for the frequencies you want to receive/transmit on. So if you get a dual-band, make sure the two bands its tuned for are the right ones.
