Күн бұрын

On the 14th of April 2024 Glasgow's Peoples palace closes for renovation.
To say goodbye, I thought I would take you on a last walk through and a look at some of the displays before they disappear.
This was a wee experiment and is a departure from my usual videos. There are no big edits, just a wander through with some unscripted commentary.
If you enjoy this episode, remember to hit the like and subscribe buttons and dont forget to check out the other episodes on my channel.

Thank you, always a delightful lesson for me. I am an old cuss so they don't let me drive any more but I did have three VW'S along the way starting with a 1963 Beetle. All the best.

That’s my wife’s favourite place to visit when we go to Glasgow, first thing is a complete walk around the park then into the palace, I’m more interested in architecture and the factory across the road from the palace is a suburb piece of Glasgow architecture, a walk down to the Clyde is also worth doing, well enough of me selling the people’s palace go and see it for yourself before it closes, greetings from Ireland

A great Thank you to the Resident Historian. I've both read and heard about the People's Palace many times so I feel honored to actually see it. It's on my bucket list the next time I visit Glasgow.

Was there last July and it did look a wee bit tired but still of great interest, good effort David to make the video under tricky circumstances, but now you’ve created a record of how it used to be, hopefully it will be a change for the better, I always liked the old transport museum at Polloksheilds ? I’m no a big fan of the riverside one, so sometimes change is not that good!

Excellent video. The Peoples Palace is always on our 'to do' list when we have friends and relatives visiting from afar. Always worthwhile and its good to talk with the friendly staff who provide explanations when required. Will look forward to the reopening. Hopefully it will not be ruined like the Transport Museum. Agree totally with your comments regarding ship models on a conveyor belt. Hopeless.

Amazing to see and wow so many memories for me walking around this Museum when I have visited Glasgow. The single end flat recreation actually makes the point about how many people would live in that one room in the nineteenth century. I used to look at this display as just another room recreation until I discovered from researching my family history and finding a census record that my grandfather lived as a child in such a one room flat with his parents and siblings as well as his Aunt and her children - all up I think it was about 10 people in one room! And that is just two generations back from myself! l On the dance hall culture, my parents met in a dance hall in the 1950s, so I would probably not exist but for those places! I grew up in Australia in the 1960s with all their dance hall stories! Again, real people's stories. But clearly time for it to be renovated, as there must be many new stories like this since it was last renovated. And also my own memory of the place, I had many a cup of tea in the Wintergarden over the years when visiting, for me, it was a warm dry place yet also "outside" in Glasgow - loved it. I didn't know the Wintergarden had closed but glad to hear it will be renovated. This is a reason to visit again when it reopens - any idea when that may occur - a few years I assume? The other landmark near the People's Palace is the Templeton's Carpet Factory building modelled on the Doge's Palace in Venice - astonishing in itself. (Sorry if you have already covered this in one of your videos, I am not sure). What a great place, and yes your video will become a valuable record of the People's Palace as it was too. I felt like I was walking around it myself, and realised how much time I had spent there myself over the years. Thank you so much.

Thank you so much for getting in touch and I am so glad my video brought back memories for you. The plan for the building is to have the museum reopened in 2027 but these things dont usually go smoothly so I would expect it to be mid to late 2028 and hopefully no longer. I worry slightly that they will be too eager to make the museum world renowned or turn it into an event location and lose sight of the fact it is supposed to be about the people of Glasgow but we will wait and see. Many thanks for supporting my channel, I hope you have a look at some other videos and like what you see.

I grew up in Monteith Row so I was lucky to have this building essentially sitting in my back yard. Used to sneak into wedding parties all the time in the Winter Gardens. Took all this for granted at the time though.

One of my favourite videos so far. Loved the slightly 'Blair witch project' feel to it! Haven't been inside for a few years. Remember taking my young son there who was doing a WWII project. Sat in the Anderson shelter & took lots of notes. Got an A for that, thanks to the PP. Even attended a wedding reception in the winter Gardens many years ago. Another excellent video Dave.

I added to the Blair witch feeling by sniffing :-D. I was frozen and I couldnt blow my nose without stopping the recording. I think those that knock the peoples palace miss the fact that its not an art gallery, its a place to see stories about Glasgow and its people and a valuable resource for those who want to learn more about the city.

I'll never vote SNP again, its outrageous that the SNP let the palace wilt and die. There's no red Clydesiders in the SNP like John McLean, John Wheatley or Mary Barbour. I'm glad to hear the palace and the winter gardens are finally being restored. A national museum of our social history. Great video, great channel. God bless you. And the hearty people of Glasgow.
@andrewheaney6858

It doesn’t really matter about red Clydesiders , we just need people who will freely speak for the good of Glasgow and Scottish people no matter their political persuasion, the “Great John McLean” was said to be “on the right side of the people and the wrong side of the law” and unfortunately today if Scot’s want free speech they may be on the the wrong side of the law like their predecessors inside this museum, some who where hung for freedom on the green outside like John Wilson !

Great video Dave, I hope they keep the whale's jaw bones when it reopens, William Arrol was across from Bernard street school where I did my secondary education. We had a gas meter that took single shillings, we also had a TV that took two Bob bits, or if you want to give it the old name, a florin. Looking forward to the next video.

Kelvingrove is a very different museum with a very different agenda. You dont get a sense from my video as the walls are covered in stories and thats what the palace is about. The museum is dedicated to people of Glasgow rather than being filled with paintings and objects with no Glasgow connection. I like the Palace and will protect the existence of a museum dedicated to the people of the city and its stories as thats pretty much my mission on Astonishing Glasgow.
