As a young lad I used to visit my grandmother who lived close to Cains Brewery and to get there I walked up and then down Park Road at the bottom of which (near the church) stood a building which showed evidence of the Blitz. Lots of holes in the stonework around the door. Near the TA barracks on Aigburth Road there used to be bunkers for anti aircraft guns which we used to play in as kids. In a similar way to the Thames estuary, Liverpool had anti aircraft towers erected in the estuary of the Mersey.

@@Robslondon Should have made time to visit the Williamson tunnels. Looks absolutely fascinating. Did manage John and Paul's houses and of course Penny Lane, Strawberry Field and The Beatles Story. The Philharmonic pub is absolutely incredible. Next time up, will see more non Beatles related places.

Yeah, I wanted to see the Williamson Tunnels too but they have very limited opening times, I could get there unfortunately

I was surprised you didn’t include the Philharmonic Pub. Lovely pub with carved panel rooms. But more notable is that it is home the England’s only grade 2 urinals. Many of the pubs do have wonderful wood work. I was told by my family it was due to shipwrights needing work. Royal Albert Docks there is the twisty slides my uncle used to move certain goods from upper levels. No doubt your time is limited. There are some wonderful stories concerning pro and anti abolitionists in the city hall. Their portraits hang opposite one another. Also some lovely treasures on display. Wonderful video, plus I learned some things about my family home town.

Thank you! I know the Phil' but didn't include it on purpose- reason being I'm hoping at some point to do another Liverpool video; one solely about the city's pubs ;-)

An absolutely awesome documentary, miles better than anything on TV. Once again, thank you very much for all the hard work you put into making these documentaries. BTW the only time I visited Liverpool was to see Shonen Knife.

One of my favourite buildings in Liverpool was the Cunard Hotel, which was shaped like a ship's bow. Word was that New York passengers could stay in a replica of their ship cabin before embarkation, and have the same room in the Big Apple as well. Loved what you've done here.x

@@Robslondon I’ve been there a few times relatively recently and I’m going next week for a gig. Ma boyles was always on the list for scouse but other pubs sidetracked me. So I’ll definitely go there after seeing it. I had scouse in the museum cafe once though and it wasnt half as good as ma boyles looked

Fantastic video as always Rob. Would be great if you had the time to do a part 2 in the future and look at places such as the two cathedrals, St Nicholas' church and St George's Hall among many other sites. You will always be welcome on Merseyside.

Owing to family connections, I’ve visited Liverpool pretty much hundreds of times. I knew a lot of these stories but certainly learned a thing or two I didn’t know. Great video which made me super nostalgic to visit again as it’s been a while. One of my favourite places in the UK.

As a scouser I love people coming and exploring.great vlog, when you was at Eleanor rigby grave just behind at back of church is sir bob paisley’s grave lfc manager “3 European cups”And if you go to edge hill you can get into the tunnels that are beneath the park that lead to the docks, if you check it out there was an amazing tunnel entrance built by Isambard Kingdom Brunel ,also further back up railway is rainhill station where the trials was held and first ever passaenger train which the rocket won. Also the billy fury statue , did you no he lived opposite Paul McCartney in St John’s Wood London his house has blue plaque .If back up this way drop me line I’ll show you few sites you won’t no, Stuart sutcliffes grave,Freddy starrs grave .Also where hitler lived in toxteth with his step brother Laois in 1912/13 as art student.

Rob that was amazing. I’m from the other ‘pool (Blackpool) and thought I knew Liverpool well. Truth is I haven’t stepped foot in the city in just over 20 years. I can’t believe how great it looks … all the soot has been blasted from the landmark buildings. I used to take potential girlfriends on dates to the Tate to show them how arty and cultured I was 😂 (whilst also conspicuously walking past the This Morning studio to try and get on the telly behind Richard and Judy). That was an inspirational video, Rob, thanks!
