On the last lap and final straight, I'd estimate the driver upshifted at or around 6,500 rpm and during that segment pulled 8 to 10 lengths on the Nissan. Better tire compound would have allowed the torque to transfer... I'm still proud to have "Almost" ridden along for those laps.

The Cheetah has a notoriously greasy rear end. You can see it break loose on numerous occasions on this run, and sometimes even the front starts to lose traction. I don't know if his tires could have been better for this track, but he barely let the cat stretch it's legs on this course.

Wow, what a race! The driver of the Cheeta is an animal. I kept thinking he's holding back on the throttle, always smoothly easing in to it. Sure enough when he gets pissed off at being cut off at the corner he always tries to pass the GTR at for the third time (8:15 in and again about 10 mins in) he floors it. The back tires break loose and the tail is whipping back and forth...and...he... rode... it...out with his foot planted. Damn what balls! (and skill) Cheeta's are no joke. They were designed to take down the Cobra. They were capable of GT40 (big block version) top speeds depending on gearing. That's 240 mph back in the 60's before modern aerodynamics became a known factor or modern tires were available. A front mid-engined V8 with such a short wheelbase that the trans bolts to the diff and the drive sits over the axel. Must be just over or just under 2,000 lbs. With a built V8 and rear drive only it took a driver of some skill just to drive one at speed, let alone take on and take down a modern all-wheel drive supercar with every advanced computerized traction enhancment currently possible. The fastest I've driven around a track was in a mind blowing Jaguar Project 8 (which was surprisingly comfortable). The Jag was a beast with it's power and traction and pulled harder out of corners then anything that comes to mind, including the new electric supers. I surprised a few people (in a good way) but it wasn't really that hard. My 95 yr old mother could post good track times in one. It just doesn't take the same level of driving skill to go fast in a modern AWD supercar that is a requirement (or you just die) that a Cheeta demands. The GTR welcomes it's driver with a light show and music from it's sound system " Come on in. Let's Party and have fun. Just floor it and steer, I'll do the rest!" What does the Cheeta tells it's driver? It depends on it's mood.... It could say "Don't even think about it". Or, "Touch me and I will fuck you up!" Or, "I'm going to rip your head off and shit down down your throat!" You can tell it's one of my dream cars. I'd love to find a half finished kit for a price I could afford... Just to be clear to anyone who hasn't driven over powered rear wheel drive and any of the modern AWD super sedans, supercars... No-no-no comparison between the skill needed to drive a GTR to the limit or a Cheeta.

Perhaps stack two or three, or find one of the same shape that’s taller? Then find a rear-opening “mailbox” fairing to cover it, like some Ferraris had in the mid-sixties? Note: going to a taller air-filter was something I did in the past to deal with the dust-storms of San Bernardino county many years ago. Before doing so, I’d need new air filters every few thousand miles…. Later, when I did so, I found that it gave a noticeable performance boost, too, especially when the stock filter housing choked airflow off especially bad. It was just about 3/8 of an inch higher than the stocker, such that the lid had a small gap the whole way around.

I run a Trans Am GT1 and come across this all the time. Cars, especially street cars, have gotten a whole lot faster. And they have nannies (anti-lock, yaw control, traction control, etc.). This is because the manufacturers want to sell product. Walter Rohrl (look him up...if you dare) has commented that it took a lot more skill in his time to go fast than in modern cars. When I practice (VIR) I cannot tell you how many times I've had Techno-boobs in 4WD, "supercars," tailgate me on the fist lap (or 2) tailgate me until I give them a point-by. And every single, after my tires have warmed up, I catch every single one of them. Technology is a wonderful thing. It has solved many problems and made our lives safer and richer. But in road racing there is a link between simplicity and skill that cannot be abrogated. The less, "BS," you have on your car the lighter it is and the more you have to rely on yourself. There are lessons here.

The Cheetah was built to beat the Cobra, which it easily did at the hands of drivers like Bob Bondurant. Originally class rules required the production of 100 units in order to compete, but following the ass beating the Cobra began receiving, the rules were changed to require 1000 units be produced. Being that the Cheetah was a hand built car while the Cobra was little more than an easy engine swap in a production AC Bristol car, there was no way the Cheetah production could've been increased 10x in order to compete the following year, in addition there was a fire at the Bill Thomas shop, so Chevrolet pulled the plug on the Cheetah. It successfully and quickly did what it set out to do.

The AC and Cheetah are great old cars, good enough to go head to head with the best today. The flip side is that they are such raw, lightweight, super torquey rear wheel drive cars is a recipe for disaster. Both cars are built to kill or at least wreck novices. Both are difficult, when pushed to their limits, even by masters. Their incredibly high potential is just as incredibly dangerous to handle. To be honest, it is a good thing that many AC replica owners don't get to a race track, and it is actually a good thing many of them plop in midrange performance 302's without too much tuning. It keeps a lot of people from getting hurt.

This guy is scared of the car and doesn't know jack ship about a 327 or he wouldn't be letting his rpm's get below about 3500. He should be using the gears to slow down instead of the brakes and when he come's out of the turns, he'd already be in the right gear. If he geared down to go around a turn and is still going to fast, then he needs to drop down another gear, even if it's 1st. He definitely is NOT a gear jamming, no fear, aggressive kind of driver and he's not going to hurt that 327 by twisting it up in the high rpm's. The 60 years I've been on this planet and all the different junk yards I've trampled through, there's only two motors I've never seen with a rod sticking out the side of it, a 283 and a 327, not saying it can't happen, but it's so uncommon it makes your chances of seeing one very very low. All this guy has to do is a shot of good whiskey, get in an argument with the old lady, hit his head on something on the way out the door, stub his little toe on something he told his kid to move earlier, smash his fingers in the door and then a bird shit on him after he's already buckled into the cheetah. Now he's ready to race and going to take out his anger on that 327 the way he should have been doing it all along.
