BTO Bird ID - Peregrines

A truly iconic species, tales of Peregrine stoop speeds and its claim to be the fastest bird on Earth are familiar, but how do you identify it? Now recovering from years of persecution and pesticide-related poisoning, Peregrines can once more be found across the country, even in our towns and cities but how do you pick them out from our other falcons?

I've been watching a peregrine family for 10 years. What an adaptive city hunter! They are ultimate pigeon hunters in cities. Race pigeon, roller pigeon or others they just take them in the air with very high speed attacks. I've never seen a peregrine eating carcass or stealing from other birds. They are unique, powerfull and elegant. King of predator birds i think.

After seeing lots of them from the SW coastal path this summer I noticed they make a lot of noise! The sound is quite distinctive and should be included here I think- it indicates when they are nearby which obviously helps when it comes to spotting them..

I guess the Hobby feeds on Swallows, Swifts and Martins so follow their prey
