BTO Bird ID - Redwing and Fieldfare

These two winter thrushes are easily told from each other. However, Redwing can be confused with Song Thrush, whilst Fieldfare is similar in size and appearance to Mistle Thrush. In this, the latest identification video from the BTO, we offer tips on how to confidently separate these engaging thrushes.

Have a garden full of them at the moment, there are 16 apple trees, a quince and a few crabapple trees. Love to watch them and listen too. Also today a fall of blackbirds also enjoying the apples.

I have managed to find a lost moult fieldfare feather on my way through the local park ❤ I rarely see them around, but when I do, they are a wonder to behold ❤ beautiful birds with adorable, unique song calls. We don't have redwings here though I guess 😅

Thank you so much for this. It has allowed me to identify a bird I saw in July on my ginkgo tree. Coupled with a clue from autumn watch as to the irritating song that has been annoying me all summer, I am now certain that a pair nested in my ginkgo tree, though I say one only once. Despite the annoying call, I am delighted!

thank you for the video. It enabled me to identify the Fieldfare seen today 25th Oct 2015 on the Quantock Hills. A clear sunny day. They were very interested in the Holly berries especially trees more out in the open.

I have a single fieldfare coming in my garden at the moment - wasn't sure if it was a mistle thrush, but now confident it is a fieldfare even though it's on its own

3 Redwing spotted in Slaithwaite Nr Huddersfield (Yorkshire UK) on 22/01/2015. Perched on a tree in Church Yard on Station Road. Weather snowy. Church Yard disused, overgrown, private, with plenty of shrubs. I live next door and really hope to see them again.
